I remember the scenes in Ireland when he won, the country went nuts! Who cares if he is English, he's done so many Irish films over the years and taken the country to his heart to such an extent that we have subsequently adopted him as one of our own. Jack Charlton was English, St. Patrick was Welsh, Michael Flatley is American..... go figure!
He does seem to be very thoughtful in every interview. In the Charlie Rose interview promoting the Ballad of Jack and rose with himself and his wife (the writer and director of the film), he did a much better job of describing her movie than she did. He should write because he talks like a writer and contributes to his characters like a writer (inventing characteristics and even some dialogue that wasn't in the script)
Whens he thinking listen to the room. Complete silence. Just a measure of the respect he commands. As an aspiring actor/writer he is the ultimate inspiration and template. Mixed with his incredible intellect is a brave, dedicated actor. The greatest.
Um, yes, he is English. At least half English...He has an English mother, an English upbringing until the age of 36, an Irish father with an English upbringing and he now has current dual citizenship in Ireland and England. In this interview, does this man sound at all Irish? LOL>
Mr Daniel Day Lewis is OH so very handsome and a true humble gentleman. I think he hasn't changed a bit at all! Still the great actor he was 10 years ago. I'm a fan of his movies very much and i can't wait for more :)
I love his look and the way he says: "Yes!" at 2:04 :P Daniel is my favorite actor of all time. The way he embraces and goes 100% for the roles he plays, its fantastic. Also that he is very careful of chosing the parts he plays, he's got such integrety. :D
of course he's an englis-irishman, maybe is for that reason tat he's so god demn good, who knows? he's unbelivable, is for me the best actor in the earth
I takes a great deal of bravery and composure to wait so long in silence to come up with a good answer. He's one of the few "movie stars" working today. In the sense of being complete and wholly formed on and off screen like the actors of the golden age of Hollywood.
Thanks Emma. I first came across your videos on imdb and I was so glad that I caught the 1990 Oscar win b4 youtube deleted it. Like koikoiboi.. a BIG THANK YOU for all the videos and I am so glad you've bcome a fundi at it.
If I remember correctly, I recorded this press room stuff immediately after the 1990 Oscars from the E! channel, which apparently just parked a camera in the room and let it roll uninterrupted until everyone went home, lol. They don't really do it that way anymore I don't think, they show bits of the press stuff but have much more of an organized aftershow now. So I don't where if anywhere you could find a complete video like this for his new (yay!) Oscar. Anyone?
I am so delighted to see this. Thank you. I had wanted to post some footage I had of Daniel from this time but the video quality was poor. I'm so grateful to those who are keeping my 22-year love of DDL alive through YouTube memories like this footage. Do you all remember his Oscar speech in 1990 for 1989's "My Left Foot"? He looked like a Romanticist brought 160 years into the future. he was remarkable.
This was an exceptionally fantastic film, and very proud as an American born Irish-Scot. Congratulations to a brilliant, unselfish, incredibly fantastic actor, who ain't bad luckin', eh Luvs? Gramach! agus Slainte, Daniel!
Glad everyone is enjoying...very cool to hear the *reporters* applauding so enthusiastically. I think some are even shouting 'bravo' as the footage begins.
what a great actor, pretending he has to think before answering questions he had already answered a thousand times!

Good point. American citizens born and raised elsewhere are often just called Americans. Why shouldn't it be the same for an Irish citizen?
