This is a very different trick to what you see today (i.e. what is called a flair). Notice that he goes straight up, does a backflip, and then spins a 180 on the re-entry. Today's flairs carve, and are more like a barrel roll - both safer and easier to perform. So yeah, it's possible that thefingerboarder could actually do a flair, but I would like to see him do it like this - straight up and down.
ive got a few buddies that do it religiously and im learning but still so many parks segregate or ban bmxs and the kids just dont wanna do it, skateboards are so much cheaper
it reminds me of how trick skiing is coming up, a lot of snowboarders think it looks cool and want to embrace it but theres still so few of them at the parks
@GiveBlood88 your soo dumb bmx is growing soo rapidly and skiing has been here forever but i guess you might live somewere that theres no money or no bike shops
that shit was massive, see how much air he needed to pull that back then? holi shit ! and it was the first one ever, I must have been awsome to witnes that back then
@theij3sus it is now. but it was not called like that before it was invented by this guy who's invented most of the tricks you can think of today on a bike
yes its a slow flair hes going like 10 feet high? most people dont go that high when doing a flair. if you rotate the same speed as if your doing it 5 feet high tehn youll overotate and die. hes amazing who learns a brand new trick never done in bmx before going 10 feet high? lol.
All these years later, this video still just gave me the chills. I wish everyone could understand what they're witnessing here. This was probably the most ground-breaking set of events in BMX history. Matt Hoffman has opened more doors in the sport than probably anyone else in any sport ever. And I'm not exaggerating.
The riders of old will always be looked upon as the inspiration for the next generation to improve, recreate, make new and better tricks. i see this as the starting block for the flair.without matt and riders of his time and there input to the sport would be different to how it is today.
In ten years time current pros will of had there time and the next generation will step up and push the boundrys further. tricks and style evolve through time and effort. just have fun and enjoy riding.
@bmxersmed What's even more impressive to me is that this was way before foam pits and resi ramps were around. These guys just thought of the trick they wanted to do and took it straight to the ramp, usually eating shit a few times before sticking it.
for all the ppl arguing its called a flair listen here. im not 100% sure but back then there would be no name so they had to call it a 180 backflip. after matt hoffman landed it wouldnt he get to name it? cuz usually whoever ands sumfin first can name the trick. so dnt hate im just trying to set things strait tho im not 100% sure
Yes u are right. It is called a flair. However, it wasn't just named a flair because it was a cool word. They choose the name because it was a mixture of FLip and AIR. So you get Flair. Because back when they came up with the 180 flip, a regular 180 on vert was refered to as an air. So you have a FL(ip)AIR(180)
@threeballbanger - You nailed it. Back in the day, in Freestylin' magazine, a guy wrote a letter offering $100 to the first person who could pull off the backflip air, or flair. He also called the backflip fakie a "flakie." (The name and the trick never caught on.) At the time, he said he halfway expected to send the check to Hoffman; he turned out to be right. BTW--I know this because I'm the guy who wrote the letter. And sent the check.
Can't belive back then it was the most sought after trick, and now if you pull it off in a big comp, the judges dont even blink an eye. Wow. Well done Mat. Saw u at NASS..awsome man. cya
Yeah, he made it hard then it normal is. He did it Alley-Oop by rotating the opposite way. Then he also did it straight up in the air rather than carving a bit to let the momentum help him.
@PorcaScrofa back then it didnt have a name this is real riding when people made up there own tricks and did it for fun now riding all about whos the better person
that is such a crazy way to pull a flair compared to how people do them now, but i spose hes on the worlds narrowest vert ramp, so corkscrew style wasnt an option
none of you monkeys have the slightest idea wtf you're talking about except daman 1101 who is right on. A Flair not Flare is a 180 backflip doesn't matter when it is initiated. Jose Yanez did the first flips and Zac Shaw did the first 360 flips in Jolly ole England. Mat is the only person with the cahones to try that bullshit on vert first.
Can anyone do a triple back with double twist on one of those half pipes? I might try it off the Harvard Bridge ... but not right now because my hands hurt and it is cold outside....and I need one of those Hoffman PL bikes first...
Cool. Thanx for that. Why didn't you say in the first place? I never heard of Jose Yanez, and haven't read the book.
Someone should update Wikipedia with this info. ;-) Ouch, it seems insane to do BMX tricks using clips. If you can't un-clip in time when you bail, it's gonna be so much more dangerous!
Hoff was the first rider to do any backflip. HIs world record first was a backflip to fakie, then later he was the first to do the one you see here. Originally called a flip 180, and later named the Flair.
I can find no evidence so far that anyone else is credited with inventing the backflip. Hoff was certainly the first to pull one off when any media were observing. ;-)
Mat Hoffman says in Ride of My life, published in 2002, 'The first guy in the sport to pull a backflip was a cat named Jose Yanez. He used toe clips to keep his feet attached to the pedals, and then did the trick ramp to ramp.'. However apparently it was one of his only tricks. He landed his first in 1986. In the Movie 'Rad' he did the stunt riding for Cru Jones whenever he did a backflip.
I hope this information is correct :) If not please say
the first time he landed badly and the crowd could not believe what Hoffman was attempting, it seemed impossible at the time. After the second attempt i thought thats it, no way hes gonna try that again.
