Is it me or do these engines have a higher pitch than the ones they run now? I know they sound similar, just a bit higher to me

Well, now they have new headers and exhaust that make them sound different. But 2003 was the year of the engine wars. These cars rev considerably higher than the current IRL car. Now only Honda remains so they've tuned them down considerably to get greater durability - no sense in pushing it when you have no one to beat.

Penske's first season in the IRL was in 2002. Didn't get what the 1-2 stood for.. :(
