That is a good question.
I thought of that myself on the second one I didn't disassemble it.
But on disassembly of the first one, there is wear evidence, with pitting
on the inner bearing race(spindle) and spalling on some of the bearings.
I figure it is bound to wear out either way.

why didn't you just put grease in the pedal casting and re-insert the bearing cartridge. The new grease pushes the old grease out and everyone is happy.
