@lukedawson90 Track matte in after effects. Basically If I can recall what I did 4 years ago, I duplicated the background plate footage, adjusted it using probably colorama to make a crude black and white mask of the sky/trees, then used this pre-comp as a track matte to 'cut out' the parts of the 3d render that would be obscured by the trees.

Check out track mattes if you don't know what I mean. They're very handy!

excellent tracking, plane needed darker shaders done to it, the fire in the engine seemed to bright, and the smoke drifting seemed odd, maybe lengthen it and create greater drift as it flys into the air.

Nice, a couple of suggestions. First of all, decrease the quality of the added images (plane, fire & smoke). That way, it looks more like it has been captured with the same camera used to capture the rest of the scene. Secondly, make it look more suitable for the weather (change the lighting, cloud shadows etc). I know you've improved (as you've said, and with the time since you uploaded this I'd be disappoint if anything but :P ).

Yeah, the trail was way to short. Also the plane wasn't crashing fast enough, it would have almost nose dived with that much damage. But other than that it was pretty good. 3/5 stars

sounds could be more effective if muffled so it sounds like it was outside the car. If you use Cooledit or Adobe Audition you can use an FFT filter to create that effect.

Steadymove to stablise the footage, Boujou for matchmoving, 3ds max for the plane, after effects for the compositing and particle effects and max2ae to bring a null in to AE with the same position in 3ds max so the particles would look like they were coming from the plane.
