You can use the command "rehash" after installing a new port or package. That way you can start using the new commands right away without having to log out and log back in again.

The little diamond-shaped ? characters probably show up on the login screen because of your browsers encoding setting. In your chrome browser hit the wrench -> Tools -> Encoding.
phpMyAdmin encodes to UTF-8 and your browsers encoding is most likely set to ISO-8859-1.
