Say what you will about the latest scandal, JoePa deserves respect in his death. He was a great man who did a lot of great things for a lot of people. Even if you imagine the worst about him, which has all been proved to be untrue, he still deserves respect in his death for the good things he has done. The world is absolutely a measurably better place for having him around.
I would love to know how many of the people criticizing Penn State for this are Catholic! They have no room to talk at all, there was ONE sick man at PSU that did the crimes and they jump all over it but by god(pun intended) they stand by their beloved Pope and church when they continually cover up child molestation for the better part of 30 years!
@DMWestWoodElite - Exactly. Or at least he did so through neglect. Fuck all the fanboys and true believers defending him just because they're students, alumni or fans of Penn State football.
Of course the media is going to tear them up, that's half the reason they decided to keep it a secret. I'm from Ohio, and I had to watch the media turn Jim Tressel into a badguy over tattoos, but they should give JoePa a pass?
and I'm reading the grand jury report right now, can you point to where it says he "MAY" have seen something, because there is nothing about a "maybe" in it at all. For anyone else go to page 6 Victim 2 for Paterno's failures. PSU fans are delusional...
You guys that are defending Joe Pa are very confused. I'm not trying to get into this, but he's getting what he deserves for this cover-up. He's not going to jail or anything, but he deserves to be fired for the cover up. He made a POOR decision, and now he's paying for it, end of..
You people leave Joe Pa out of this. You can use hindsight as much as you want, but Joe did nothing wrong. Sure he didn't do everything he could have, but he did nothing criminal when he handed information over to the AD who was supposed to do their job. It sucks that he's going to have to end the best college coaching career in history to be the scapegoat for this, but you cannot blame everything on Joe Pa and not give a bit of attention to the 3 men who committed an actual crime here.
@DOWSPOWERLEVEL fuck off. he protected a child rapist, he deserves everything he gets. fuck the wins. fuck the legacy. After a quick trial, uncle Jerry needs to spend the last six months of his life getting raped and beaten daily in general population until he's killed or off's himself. Everyone one knew needs to be immediately fired, including Paterno, and blackballed from any that has to do with football or education. Most of them should be brought up on charges.
@lonnie817 Calm yourself or I might ask that you use your powers of hindsight to tell me the winning lotto numbers for the next megamillions drawing since, you know, you KNOW exactly what happened and how YOU would have acted under the circumstances.
@Yolktern1 No I don't know exactly what happened, heck, JoePa could have been tag teaming little boys with uncle Jerry. I mean if you're accusing me of being misinformed, and sensational thats what I would say lol. Read the Grand Jury report. They all knew they had a monster running around and could have very well stopped him. Please don't drag yourself or try to drag others down to the moral level of your heroes.
@lonnie817 Shhhh...you're going to pop a blood vessel forcing out all these accusations. Stop sensationalizing a tragedy and using it to troll YouTube. If I didn't grow up with the internet I'd be surprised by your use of such criminal activity to attack people. Instead, it's just another day on good 'ole YouTube with the trolls. And I'm still waiting for those lotto numbers!
@Yolktern1 Wow you're dense. Stop making excuses for people who turned a blind eye to child rape then pulling the "it's a tragedy so chill out" card. It wouldn't be such a tragedy if they spoke up sooner. It's not an accusation lol. They knew about what he did and what he was since at least 2002. I mean their under oath admitting it lol. The lotto number analogy is retarded lol. And if i was trolling i wouldn't take the time to write paragraphs.
@lonnie817 I really should stop feeding the trolls here but I've got a soft spot for starving wildlife so I'll leave some more food out here as this troll seems like one of the obese ones. Actually the lotto analogy makes perfect sense as you're professing that you're all knowing so it'd make sense that you would know the lotto numbers (still waiting btw!). But the grand jury report just says the grad assistant told Jo he MAY have seen something indecent. So let's run to the police on a "maybe"!
Actually the lotto analogy is completely retarded. Do you know that you're eventually going to die or that if you don't eat you will be hungry? OMG you must be all-knowing! Give me the lotto numbers!!
It doesn't take me being all-knowing (which is a concept you don't seem to understand) for me to KNOW what I would have done and it involves calling the police, if you honestly don't know what you would do if you were informed of a child rapist then you are PSU level scumbag
@2666rb Actually YOU sir are the one who is incorrect. Your statements are FACTUAL statements; however, what everyone is making here are mere allegations of what they THINK Paterno was told. The grand jury testimony only stated that the graduate assistant told him he saw "something that made him uncomfortable" or something to that effect. So yes, if you know something that the grand jury doesn't then you are all knowing and SHOULD call the police (and give me the lotto numbers).
My main problem is that Penn State did not fire JoePa because of what he did, they fired him because he was a prominent face the media was using for the scandal. Joe Paterno was ruled innocent of any crime by the grand jury, and he did what he was trained to do by reporting to his superiors in a serious accusation. So there was no rational grounds for firing JoePa, especially when he was voluntarily retiring at the end of the year. Joe Paterno is getting an unfair amount of blame.
For example: Where is the public outcry against Mike McQueary who chose not to act when witnessing the crime, even though he was a 28 yr old, ex-football player capable of fighting off a 58 yr old.
Or for Tim Curley and Gary Schultz who actively cover up the whole thing.
In the end, the Board of Trustee acted out their best interest and made a decision before the investigation was completed. Even the attorney representing the victims did not agree with their decision.
Where's the public outcry over McQueary? He's received multiple death threats that kept him out of State College. Not to mention he has also been taking a beating by the media. Don't get me wrong he should be fired.
Just because JoePa didn't do anything illegal doesn't mean he shouldn't have been fired. If I show up late to work everyday should I not be fired because I didn't break any laws? He didn't do anything legally wrong but he did something wrong by PSU and moral standards
I'm talking about the bashing that Joe Paterno has taken on the media and forums compared to McQueary and co. It's disproportional to the role that he played in the whole thing. If you skipped work everyday, you would not be completing your obligation as an employee. JoePa on the other hand did everything that was required of his job. This is the same reasoning that has allowed Mike McQueary to keep his job, which brings it back to the board firing JoePa because it was convenient.
I agree that he takes an unfair amount of bashing but not an unfair level of blame, nobody accused him of doing anything he didn't do, it's just reported on more because of his prominence. As much as no one wants to admit it now, JoePa was more than just a fb coach at PSU, he had a lot more sway with the University than most (any?) other CFB coaches and with the extra powers he was granted, he has extra responsibilities. His role at PSU requires him to report something like this.
People are blaming him like he committed the crime. All JoePa had a graduate assistant's accusation against an ex-30 year employee about a heinous crime. So JoePa does the most sensible thing with the amount of information he has: He tells the eyewitness to go to the police while he makes a report to his superiors. If they tell him later on that the issue had been resolved and not to worry. How does he know they're covering it up vs. Sandusky being innocent and the assistant was wrong?
He was never told the issue was resolved nor did he tell anyone else to go to the police. Where do you pull this stuff from? He also knew of the incident in 1998, so when you hear of something similar happening again, in your locker room, the most sensible thing is to go straight to the police.
Sorry, I didn't see you responded. McQueary said JoePa told him to go to the police, but he was too afraid because Sandusky was a family friend. JoePa reported to Shultz who is the administrative head of the campus police force, and PSU is legally it's own community meaning it's a real police force and not rent-a-cops... So Schultz was an appropriate authority to report too. Supposedly JoePa was told 2002 that the issue was resolved, but prosecutors have asked him not to talk about it.
Joe Pa is a figure head and ALL penn st fans know it. he doesnt do shit, whens the last time he did something meaningful on the sidelines? like 15 yrs ago?
