What freaking ever. You know, if you take any of these turntables and plate them all with real gold, you can probably make them even more expensive.......What comes to my mind is Steve Martin's "Googlephonics" routine from the album "Comedy is not Pretty".
the question is, that REALLY makes that a vinyl sounds better than a good by example Technics SL1200's with proper configuration cartridge etc... ?????????
honestly if i were rig up a complete system with the advertised equipment, it will cost me more than a million, how many millionaires would spend that on a hifi system, unless they are from some sort of oil producing sheikhs, and you expect those sheikhs to appreciate good sound/ music reproduction
@die101 The answer is hardly anyone. Only the truly anal retentive so called audiophile would if he had the cash. I might check out Craig's List to see what the going price is for a used set up.
@itsmegp46 you only need to spend a tiny fraction of that to make vinyl sound better than cd, with higher sample rates though it becomes more difficult.
@cannissolis I've had vinyl records since Pres. Johnson was in office. Once I heard CD quality music, I was sold. Although there hasn't been much success in its marketing, DVD-A music sounds even better. Besides, Cd's like vinyl are about to go the way of the dinosaur with digital downloads. Then there is where I listen. Most of that is while driving, about 40,000 miles annually. My new car has a hard drive that will store roughly 4,500 songs.
@itsmegp46 I have had vinyl approx 2 years less than you in that case, hifi as a hobby nearly as long, I have worked in various branches of the audio industry am an engineer and physicist also a musician for fun. after listening to hundreds of set ups, I am in no doubt that vinyl can sound superior to cd, the dvd format you mention has the higher sample rate That I said makes digital music more difficult to beat with analogue, cd is definitely more convenient but how much did you
From my very first sampling, I was sold. Not only me, but from vitually every audio magazine I read at the time, the consensus was, vinyl is dead. The vinyl collection is for the most part, stored away in my basement after the turntable stopped working about 10 years ago. As for how much I've spent, hard to say. I've got my current set up purchased maybe 15 years ago. But all the cars I've owned, since 1985, 6 I think, all had cd players. Some were standard some optional.
@itsmegp46 funny how fickle hifi magazine reviews are perhaps they are profit driven!!!
your deck stopped working, well that kind of answers my question, I still regularly use decks made in the 50's and 60's but they were expensive then and are properly serviced to sound good with quality cartridge, arm and phono stage, they still sound better than the best cd players that I have heard. but granted they can't be used in cars but you don't need vinyl quality over wind road and engine
@mitch19636 Yeah, lord knows I'm sure that 200,000 dollar model isn't an audiophile quality machine. But I'm sure your few hundred dollar special can beat it. I'm absolutely sure of it.
So many posting utter rubbish on here. You would be amazed how good a great turntable/arm/cartridge set up properly can sound. You don't need to spend a fortune though.
Apparently there's a turntable costing far more than the Goldmund---asking price: almost $700,000!!! Madness, I tell you. Will the over-kill decadence ever cease?
Will a 200k table sound twice as good as a 100k table. Absolutely not. The 100k table might even sound better; be a better match for your tonearm, cartridge, phono stage, etc.
.
But to those that believe that it is a waste of money to spend more than a few hundred dollars... It is a waste if you cannot afford it (like me). If you are loaded, this stuff sounds killer good. Although I have not heard this level of equipment, I have heard some expensive stuff that sounds great.
I've never heard a $100K turntable, but I have heard a $10K one in a $60K system. It's something I won't ever forget. Don't be so quick to judge something you know nothing about.
Any turntable above 500$ is overpriced, since what you will be listening on it is only a vinyl record. People usually become delusional when they see equipement thats is so very expensive, as if the music will sound better than on "normal" mid-end to high-end equipement. It wont sound better. It will only sound as good as it was recorded.
@derbigpr500 It will sound better and it does sound better - but that is really besides the point when you are can spend over $150,000 on such things. Art can be very expensive and most of these high end turntables are incredible works of modern art. Why buy a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport that costs $2.3M when most speed limits are 70mph? It is nuts and yes....with all this silly money one could feed the hungry.
I agree with you, but in all fairness did hear some 2k range turntable sound slightly better, as tonearm was upgraded and overall better design, but wasn't worth the upgrade for me, but a bare stock technics 1200 with denon dn-160, will beat out most audiophile $1000 turntables, reason why they when up in price as they are out of production, plus you can do mods to the 1200 for better sound, just won't look as nice as a 2k and up table. You buy them to listen to, not to look at.
Whenever something is taken to a start of the art proposition, the logic of money is the first thing dismissed...pick your poison; cars, jewelry, planes, homes...why would anyone be surprised in this instance? In any tech field, it's the nature of pushing the envelope-it's not intended to be purchased by everyone, though others may benefit from trickle down technology in a regular product down the line.
if you eat alot and have a big morning pile of turd that made of gold it will cost a lot and will cost a lot to queen of england but that doesn't make it good.
The $300,000 Goldmund reference II used to cost only $14,000 in it's original version 25 years ago. It was that dissimilar; I wonder why such a huge price increase.
Nothing, they figure let rip anyone that is stupid enough to buy, then you deserve to get rip off!! People buy this stuff because they can hence "status symbol", and the sad thing is, they never actually use all that much. You can built a good midrange system for under 4k or a good system for around 8k-25k. Would spent at least 2k on a good receiver or preamp with separate amp and no less then $400 on a turntable unless used and $100 on a good cartridge and get good speakers.
I just don't get it, you could take the money that these things cost and buy everyone in America a stereo, just how good do you think a record can sound? I know you guys in the unreal world of the million dollar audio gear zone like to listen to french horns and zylophones and crap like that but down here in the real world all that stuff don't mean shit. How many people do you think are sitting at the table at home thinking man I might get me a $300,000.00 record player? I bet not to many.
Wow! I never knew such things existed. All the time, I thought the most expensive turntable was a little over $14,000. I guess I was wrong. What is seen in this video is like the Rolls Royce/Bugatti Veyron of turntables. Heck! One of them (the one at 0:38-END) is practically the price of a Rolls Royce.
I don't think you need $100,000 to spend on a turntable to play records. I have a Revox B790 which can smoke all of these snake oil products. It only cost me $300,
The quest for the last small fraction of a percent of audio performance at any cost reminds me of an article I read in a audio magazine about 35 years ago. The article suggested that the biggest improvement in the sound of your stereo for the smallest amount of money was to have your ears thoroughly cleaned in a doctors office as any minute amount of wax buildup on your eardrum acts to deaden your ability to hear, especially the higher frequencies. After all, the ear has the final say.
@gsfish11 Use almond oil every week and wash out after two days. If you look closely about what crud comes out of there you wont worry about a bit of dust on the cantilever.
All these are aimed at the Arab oil sheik/banker-with-a-bonus types who fancy themselves as DJs. Audience? = Two - themselves in a mirror. It's like going to Tescos in a Bentley. I'd personally feel far more pleasure from owning a nicely made DIY set-up.
I must laugh at the dimwit who says 'trust me' this is s*** ! I would like to hear one. These are obviously built for the megarich, eccentrics and Audio nuts.
A great turntable needs to have a solid base to deaden resonance and eliminate Acoustic Feedback. With that massive chassis should be OK & must have a great transducer, cartridge and I'm sure they do.
What about snap crackle & pop? if you have money to burn then you may as well have your own Vinyl factory & make the Lp's yourself!
if u wanna buy this Sh*t go to the junk yard this sh*t is bull sh*t trust me if u wanna save your money oh I for got u rich um don't know nothing bout turntables I guess I go to the junk yard and make a sculpture sell it bout a $1,000,000
I have seen one of these in action. The impression I got was that it would actually take the fun out of playing records. It was quite the choir just to get the record properly on the turntable.
Don't be to quick to judge. Maybe this is something that is important to them and they gave 10 million to charity and got one of these a a b-day gift for themselves. I would not call that a selfish person.
I understand what you are saying I just don't like to see people judged w/o any facts about the person.
@ioneking I partially agree with you on a technical, not on an ethical ground. On an ethical ground, I agree 100% with @mrhoffame. When it comes specifically to TT in hi-end audio, you reach a point where you spend 10 times to get a 0.01 extra score in the fidelity of the audio. I challenge the builders of a 200K$ TT if they would set-up a panel of listeners and identify their TT against a good quality 5 or 10K$ TT. So actually the extra 190K$ IS wasted money !
@ioneking no rich man with selfish mind dare to buy those things. If the person gives away money for the perfect stuff, someone can use those money for something good.
Of course not, it is all about buring money to show off.
