While Berganza's art is consummate and I love her voice... I prefer a more ethereal version of this lullaby in a higher tessiture/range.
The song has obviously been nourished by the long tradition of Arabo-Andalouse/Sepharade music, and the music brings to mind another well known lullaby dating from the 16th century, "Nani, nani", "La Mujer Enganada", (the deceived wife).
@Frenchy3464, it has the typical andalusian syncopation that makes it so spanish. I don't agree with you. I like it in the range sung here, but there's no accounting for taste; so yours is as good as mine. I too love Berganza.
Nana is Spanish for lullaby. Like English, it is used both as a verb and as a noun. I think of this song more as a funeral dirge than a lullaby. Manuel de Falla's life was beset by death and suffering, and his family suffered the loss of his younger brother at the age of two. It is a beautiful song, eerie and chilling, but full of love.
It is hard to imagine how this performance can be bettered. Superb controlled emotion in the voice and an accompaniment that sounds as if it was originally written for the guitar (the original accompaniment was for piano I believe?). Just wonderful.
me encanta!!!

Just listened to this gem again - a miniature by de Falla but non the less moving for that.
A supreme combination, Berganza and Estarellas...

Beautifully-disciplined voice. Perfect for this classic by de Falla.

Bellissimo! ipnotico... non so quante volte l'ho riascoltata in questi giorni!
