Bruno won matches against Larry and all major venues - Eventually beating him at Shea in a cage match. He would retirre soon after which had nothing to do with Larry. He would later go after McMahon and his company for ruining the business. Justifiably so.
For all you who watch this and feel the need to comment on the blading.....Back in the day nobody outside the business knew about it so no wrestler felt the need to hide it. at 6:24 it plainly shows Bruno scratching his own forehead and at 6:45 Bruno stashes the object in his trunks. It's sad to see this, as Sanmartino was indeed a living legend.
Larry was HATED after this...he was once attacked by a group of fans as he arrived at an arena to wrestle...they tried to tip the taxi cab over,,,Zybysko had to be rescued by police...
@TheyFarted: Sammartino isn't a fan of how Vince McMahon had set up the WWF/ E after Vince's father gave him ownership of the company and how that effected the entire industry of pro wrestling.
I remember this match, seeing it on tv on a Saturday morning. I think it was around February of 1980. At the time it was disturbing, although nowadays using chairs in a match is standard fare.
The Longest WWWF/WWF/WWE Champion!!!....Almost 9 years with the belt!...From 63-71 then inanother 4 years..from 73-77! A Legend...Must be Hall of Famer!

@bambebom watch 20/20 report on pro wrestling, part 1/2 ,ur gonna be disappointed but i still love wrestling since i seen some of the secrets i want to be one!
Look carefully--it looks like the referee Dick Kroll opens his hands and drops the blade to the ring, and then Bruno picks it up off the ground. Bruno cuts himself while the crowd is distracted by Zybyzsko's throwing the referee out of the ring.
Bruno puts it in his shorts after using it, but it looks like the referee had it with him the whole match up to that point.
@rstryker27 Yup, I was just gonna post that. You actually see him swipe at his forehead afyer both times hit with the chair, then of course the cloesup of stashing the blade away in his trunks. lol.
Booking 101 right here. Basic, simple and most of all EFFECTIVE. Zbyszko got jealous he wasn't as good as Bruno and betrayed him. Bruno then sought revenge. No dumbass swerves were necessary back then to surprise the audience. They were willing to pay to see Bruno kill Larry.
How good is this? It's so good that 30 years later I run into wrestling fans who think the whole thing was real. It's true that thanks to videwos like this you can stop it and see the blade pass, etc. And you can see that most of Larry's chair shots were, um, not up to HHH-Taker standards. But you can feel the story oozing out of this clip. Bruno was 45 years old and still selling the notion he could snap Larry like a breadstick if he really wanted to. He'll always be one of my heroes.
At 6:40, you can almost see Bruno Sammartino "Blading" himself. At 6:44 after cutting himself, he puts the blade back into his trunks. Vince McMahon says Samartino is "Cut wide open" and that he is "Bleeding Profusely". As if to say that Samartino bled from all the beating. Oh please, we All saw that he cut himself with the blade.
Watch Sammartino after Zbyskyo throws him into the corner. When he's on the ground, he pulls the blade out of his wristguard, rolls over, cuts himself with the blade while face down, then tosses the blade out of the ring. This all starts at about 6:10

@disgruntledgoatiam Did you actually think they squirt ketchup on their heads back then? Or did you actually think these guys tried to kill each other with weapons?
@Rayla840 There was a guy on my street who was big into wrestling and he told us kids that they used tiny razors. I was a kid then and didnt have the luxury of reviewing videos. It was still entertaining. The only thing is that I remember how much father HATED wrestling. He used to give me a lot of shit for it.
@disgruntledgoatiam Haha. I was just messing wit ya. It does bother me though for some reason when people point out "blade jobs". I just never cared, or wanted to know about that stuff back then, or now. And I know how you feel. My dad hated how obsessed I was with wrestling back in the day. @curtisjones400 First of all tuffguy, it was entertainment. The matches were set up. So no one could really find out who was tougher than who. Every wrestling match was like that. And show me the comment where I said he was great. He was a great ENTERTAINER. I am sure he could handle himself in a real fight anyway.
@disgruntledgoatiam In history a lot of the older wrestlers were trained to hurt people for real, break bones and twist people in bad positions, they were hookers and not the kind that hang around street corners, they hooked someone and thats all she wrote, if any of those old guys were younger and went into UFC, they would dominate period, the guys there now wouldn't stand much of a chance.
@gawagney "Disgraceful?" "Cowardly?" From what planet do you come from? The one where you think that this match wasn't predetermined? Bruno takes out a blade, cuts himself and then stashes it in his trunks.

yep. babe ruth is best. jim brown is best. yup. kareem is the best. tyson is the best. uh huh. why is it everything from YOUR youth is best, but everything new sucks? maybe you all suck? i mean, we all agree cena is garbage, but angle or bryan or richards or mistico can bring it.
I remember this match as a child, now as a man I see Sammartino tucking in his "blade" beginning at 6:42. Still This was a good match that set up the Shea Stadium encounter.
@lonechief Well, that's when men were men. not like the guys today who all wax their bodies and look like gay porn stars. i miss the old days when guys looked like men.
This was the essence of wrestling that made it so fucking unique!
No need for fucking moonsaults or dumbasses killing themselves from doing suicide dives. Ever notice how most of the midgets and monkeys pulling off those moves BARELY get over? XD You can only go so far doing that crap. But hey, you wanna put yourself in a hospital bead, no sweat of my sac.
@KptainKrusher450 Way to sound like a true spot monkey mark rotfl! You act as if the WWE actually focuses on the lucha style, spot fests, and fancy tricks when in reality they’ve gone back to the traditional slow paced method of working a proper match, similar to the 80s. In fact, they're probably slower now than they were in the early 90s.
@Kuzco52 I don't know, I'm a Mick Folley fan. He's been around a long while, I'm also a Buzz Sawyer (RIP)Fan and neither one of them have shown much consideration for their own safety. I'm sure Folley has to feel that shit every day and I know Terry Fnk does cause there's a documentary with Both of those two in it on here somewhere.
@Kuzco52 have u heard of aj styles, jeff hardy, christopher daniels, the mcmg, low ki, the brisco brothers, the list goes on and on. to say high flyers barely get over is just an uneducated statement
@zyniker88 are u stupid? just because tna is now run by the fucks who ruined wcw doesnt mean those guys arent over. and low ki amd the briscos have made names for themselves in roh. u dont have to like them, but to say they dont get over is wrong. there is no argument. everyone on that list has shown they can get over with a crowd for an extended period of time
@Kuzco52 Rey Mysterio and AJ Styles are two of the most popular wrestlers today, and they both got over thanks to their fast-paced, high-risk styles. Up until a couple years ago, Jeff Hardy was arguably the 2nd-most over wrestler in the world, with only John Cena drawing more than him, and he built his fanbase mainly through his high-flying style and his underdog persona. Unfortunately his drug problems got the better of him and he's basically gone to shit now.
@Kuzco52 Suicide dives and high impact moves for that matter are just a natural progression of wrestling. I am not saying matches should be a complete spot fest but if you actually think the average fan would react to a match like this now days then you are fooling yourself. Also man by todays wrestling standards both these men are midgets. Sammartino was billed at 5'11" and Larry was billed at 6 ft. Given that was there billed height it might not even be accurate.
well put.. just read article by Bill Simmons on ESPN.com about Macho Man's life and death where he describes this match in detail without naming the names. This was the match, he says, that hooked him onto wrestling. Read it .

you clearly see him rip his blade out and when he slices his forehead, which is twice, and then he places the blade in the waist-band of his trunks....classic!
I used to love watching the facial expressions and behavior of the useless refs. Sometimes, they were more interesting to watch than the wrestlers. As a kid, I always wondered what the hell was their purpose. The wrestlers almost seemed oblivious to the refs.
For all you who watch this and feel the need to comment on the blading.....Back in the day nobody outside the business knew about it so no wrestler felt the need to hide it. @carl22069 And come to think of it I bet Whistler felt it was a chance to actually hurt Bruno. I wouldn't doubt if he really was taking advantage of that chance because let's face it, wrestlers at that time did their job to put food on their table and make ends meet and if I get a free swing at the big dog in hopes of gaining status both story line wise and for my wallet, I'd have swung the chair and pummeled Bruno as hard as McMahon would've allowed. This is some great stuff!
@carl22069 Well this is great stuff compared to even today's standards because of the story line itself. Despite how sloppy it may look to a fan like myself seeing as I'm of the "attitude era" generation of wrestling fans (and since wrestling at the time of this video was slow and methodical vs today where it's fast paced) but this is flawless execution and of the story line because you can literally see the wheels of doom turning in Whistler's head and Bruno fearing actual injury.
Wow.. absolutely brilliant. I never saw any 80's wrestling (born in '88) but what a great job by both men, particularly by Larry Whistler (Zbyszko). That's legit rage if I've ever seen it. Either that he just makes it look "that real". I can only IMAGINE the shock/rage that overcame the crowd when this happened, lucky there wasn't a riot. It's not hard to see why Larry fast became one of the most hated of all time. Stellar quality.

@dwe253 It's near the end of the clip. I don't know why Bruno hates Vince McMahon. Bruno did blade jobs. Bruno worked scripted professional wrestling contest.
@1981CrueHead Bruno had issues with the McMahon family going back to about 1962. Vince's dad blackballed Bruno because he wanted to work a show for an independent promoter in Montreal. Vince's dad wouldn't let him but Bruno worked it anyway, so to get even, McMahon booked Bruno for a match in Philly without his knowledge. When Bruno "no-showed" the Philly match, he was suspended. He didn't find out till he showed up for his next scheduled match and was told there.
@1981CrueHead Bruno dislikes VKM for a number of valid reasons. Vince hates Bruno because he went around accusing Vince of peddling steroids to the "boys" backstage and pressuring them to "go on the gas" or get fired. Bruno made his accusations on Larry King's show as well as on Phil Donahue and Morton Downey Jr., and every one of them were true. Bruno should have been one of the very first people inducted into WWE's "Hall Of Fame", but I don't think you'll ever see him there.
Oh man saturday nights in the late 60s on wor 9 I can hear the grand wizard telling vince mcmann how great his wrestler was, and after this went off fright night came on
This is totally old-school. Back when wrestling used to air on Saturdays on your local, hometown TV station, after all the classic cartoons. The angles were much better and more drawn-out back then. Also, wrestling was still considered a legit sport in many circles back then as well.
Some say it was a boring match...it was by design. They lulled people into the typical face vs face match of the time, the so-called scientific wrestling clinic...
i think that it was a good match, except that they took a lot of pauses. I loved that abdominal stretch reversal, etc. The wwe should use a bit of this match, less the many pauses.
@gengarjetty the pauses were part of the story....two men thinking of how they were gonna maneuver each other in an era when they at least tried to make it look as real as possible......they dont do that now.
I understood why they paused, it's a part of the matches story.
but the culture in general doesnt like things that were too slow, in fact, they want it fast, but I feel that the matches these days lack any depth. Basically I'm not for the extremes, I like it in the middle :)
I remember seeing this match and back then this was a BIG DEAL, people were SHOCKED that Zbyszko turned on his mentor like that...you just didn't see stuff like this on a weekly basis. Too bad the rest of this match wasn't here, cause Sammartino was put on a stretcher and Zbyszko knocked him off of it as they carried Bruno away lol. This set the stae for a great feud that really never ended. Zbyszko even took to calling himself the "Real Living Legend".

@gawagney "Disgraceful?" "Cowardly?" From what planet do you come from? The one where you think that this match wasn't predetermined? Bruno takes out a blade, cuts himself and then stashes it in his trunks.

I remember this match as a child, now as a man I see Sammartino tucking in his "blade" beginning at 6:42. Still This was a good match that set up the Shea Stadium encounter.

Sammartino was a great wrestler back in his day. Wouldn't have hurt for him to shave his back once in a while though.

Excellent!
Still miss Vince on commentary, tbh.

Congrats on your stupidity.

@Kuzco52 I miss Vince and Pat Patterson as booker. WWE writers suck.
thedawn090 10 months ago
@Kuzco52 Rey Mysterio and AJ Styles are two of the most popular wrestlers today, and they both got over thanks to their fast-paced, high-risk styles. Up until a couple years ago, Jeff Hardy was arguably the 2nd-most over wrestler in the world, with only John Cena drawing more than him, and he built his fanbase mainly through his high-flying style and his underdog persona. Unfortunately his drug problems got the better of him and he's basically gone to shit now.
Sanguiluna 10 months ago
@Kuzco52 Suicide dives and high impact moves for that matter are just a natural progression of wrestling. I am not saying matches should be a complete spot fest but if you actually think the average fan would react to a match like this now days then you are fooling yourself. Also man by todays wrestling standards both these men are midgets. Sammartino was billed at 5'11" and Larry was billed at 6 ft. Given that was there billed height it might not even be accurate.

Viper102650 1 year ago

At 6:44 you can see Bruno slip a blade back in his trunks that he used to cut himself so he could bleed from the chair shot to the head.
dwe253 1 year ago
@dwe253 It's near the end of the clip. I don't know why Bruno hates Vince McMahon. Bruno did blade jobs. Bruno worked scripted professional wrestling contest.
1981CrueHead 1 year ago
@1981CrueHead Bruno had issues with the McMahon family going back to about 1962. Vince's dad blackballed Bruno because he wanted to work a show for an independent promoter in Montreal. Vince's dad wouldn't let him but Bruno worked it anyway, so to get even, McMahon booked Bruno for a match in Philly without his knowledge. When Bruno "no-showed" the Philly match, he was suspended. He didn't find out till he showed up for his next scheduled match and was told there.
elc1960 1 year ago
@1981CrueHead Bruno dislikes VKM for a number of valid reasons. Vince hates Bruno because he went around accusing Vince of peddling steroids to the "boys" backstage and pressuring them to "go on the gas" or get fired. Bruno made his accusations on Larry King's show as well as on Phil Donahue and Morton Downey Jr., and every one of them were true. Bruno should have been one of the very first people inducted into WWE's "Hall Of Fame", but I don't think you'll ever see him there.

This is totally old-school. Back when wrestling used to air on Saturdays on your local, hometown TV station, after all the classic cartoons. The angles were much better and more drawn-out back then. Also, wrestling was still considered a legit sport in many circles back then as well.

scumgod13 1 year ago
@cbpointblank :
i think that it was a good match, except that they took a lot of pauses. I loved that abdominal stretch reversal, etc. The wwe should use a bit of this match, less the many pauses.
gengarjetty 1 year ago
@gengarjetty the pauses were part of the story....two men thinking of how they were gonna maneuver each other in an era when they at least tried to make it look as real as possible......they dont do that now.
mfbinc 11 months ago
@mfbinc :
I understood why they paused, it's a part of the matches story.
but the culture in general doesnt like things that were too slow, in fact, they want it fast, but I feel that the matches these days lack any depth. Basically I'm not for the extremes, I like it in the middle :)
