  • Warning: if you play this game you will never be the same again

  • The best game I've ever played by far. Anyone else been drawing Modron Maze maps on a piece of paper?

  • @Stashix Yes, I happen to know someone who did... :D

  • @Stashix yep.

  • Just listening to this makes you wanna play again. The whole game in one sitting.

  • All the people freaking out about JRPGs need to watch the credits video of PS:T. In the "THANKS" section at 1:40, they thank FFVII and FFVIII for inspiration. There you have it the PS:T team liked FF. You can all stop flaming now.

  • What can change the nature of a man?

  • 1:13 - 1:33 is like from The Predator Movie... excellent

  • Am i the only to remember Vault city in the first few seconds of the song ?

  • @Yemetha The composer for Planescape Torment and Fallout 1 & 2 are the same person.

  • @TheZorch Goes without saying.

  • Started to play it again from the beginning... excellent story, the greatest RPG of all time

  • even the great BG's (pun intended) pale in comparison to this

  • Best part of the song 2:49 until 2:52 that melody just keeps getting stuck in my head.

  • UPDATED MY JOURNAL

  • @melosebrainuhoh Anyway Im going stop this little flame war and just enjoy this brilliant theme

  • how i miss old rpg games

  • What can change the nature of a man ?

  • 5 people are jelaous about Morte's sense of humor.

  • LOVE Mark Morgan. So good. For those of you who weren't aware, Mark was the keyboardist for Starship, of "We Built This City on Rock And Roll" and "Sara" fame.

  • @swelsher Wow! That I didn't know, nice info!

  • @swelsher How could a guy party responsible for 'Built This City' make music this good? That song was the auditory equivalent of ball cancer.

  • The very start reminds me of Metal Gear Solid's music.

  • Planeswalker for 17 Eons and counting. Make mine Planescape...

Greatest roleplaying moment GM'n MY Sigil, a giant multiversal megalopolis, reminiscent of magical Coriscant. :

My buddy's GF was new to RP, early on she fell off a huge walkway on the "sky(plane)scraper", she was intercepted by traffic. An Ancient Gold Dragon that was flying by literally liquified her body across his face... bug on a windshield. Her astral self continued in the campaign, She was a Gith. He was a Tiefling.

    ;D

  • I dont want to be a hater but parts of it sounds suspiciously similar to the predator theme.

  • Final Fantasy 7 = one chick with boobs and one chick stabbed in the back

  • I just started this game, I've been missing out so much! I thought Baldur's Gate was the greatest RPG, and Sanitarium the most twisted game of all time. Boy, was I wrong!

  • Which game should I get? I really love Baldur's Gate, but I want to try one of these. Or a suggestion? Let me know all info please.

    Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader

    Planescape: Torment

    Icewind Dale

    Neverwinter Nights

  • @Biake22 If you haven't played Planescape it's a no brainer. Hands down the best game I have ever played. Any PC gamer will attest to that statement.

  • @Biake22

Lionheart: I dunno about this one

Icewind Dale: A good story and nice games but the characers are hollow as you yourself create your entire party. No life in them.

NWN: The first two campaigns (original and undrentide) are designed for team- multiplaying, so they are boring for a single player(no real plot). The Underdark is designed with singleplaying in mind, and so, much more story-driven and resembles the old classic BlackIsle RPGs. Still, much weaker.

    Torment: best game evar.

  • @Biake22 if you like game mechanics of BG2, and some oldschool hacking and slashing, go for icewind dale(IWD 2 is much more challenging :D), if you want to play a game with great story, go for Planescape torment, if you want to play online Neverwinter Nights is the best choice. Lionheart didn't impress me with anything.

  • What can change the nature of man? My first answer would be: this game. Seriously, play it.

  • @Larrylarp The best and most true comment I've ready about PS:Torment.

  • Never played torment, was a bit before my time :P but I certainly appreciate this music its amazing. My first exposure to Black Isle was BG and I was only a kid, those memories stay with you for life.

  • I'm going to kill you bastard !!

nop, I'm Immortal, YOU are going to die !!

  • THIS MUSIC REMINDS ME OF VAULT CITY FROM FALLOUT AT THE BEGINNING

  • @Scarab1233 It's that hollow BONNNNGGGG noise.

Actually, remix this with Vault City. "What can change the nature of a man?" "MINUS 20!"

  • One RPG that I really liked

    The story music and everything

Though I never finished it :( I stucked in Modron Cube

  • A epic story !

  • God how I loved this game!

    It's epically awesome <3

    I love the the sign/tatoo ;o

  • It truly amazes me how well this game is written, a paragraph of written description and dialogue from Planescape is more gripping and vivid than all those uncanny-valley awkward looking 3D models from Elder Scroll, Mass Effect and Final Fantasy 13 combined.

  • @DrNightbringer WORD.

  • for the ones who will play planescape, a site with an unnoficial patch, restoration pack and tweaks, look for spellholdstudios on google.

  • Torment of the mind. Torment of the body. Torment of the soul. All will be made clear when the Circle is drawn.

  • Dont compare WRPG to JRPGs, To all gamers that care about plotlines and a well developed story you should try the VN games nitche, there are many Jgames with great plotlines characters and scenarios. But dont expect something like Torment because there is no game like this anywhere in the whole world as far as i know.

Try a Vn like Ever 17 and see if it is your cup of tea.

  • @LreoSan True. This game is just fucking incredible, period. The story is so immersive, the game world is so original and the characters are so deep... I find The Nameless to be one of the best characters in videogame history. His backstory, as a character, is not comparable to anything that has been made.

When I found the burning guy was my disciple I shat my pants :D.

  • @Owneador1337 You should try Vn games if you dont mind reading a lot of texts, try a game like Fate stay night if you haven´t and tell me what you think about it. It is a great game and got some great moments in it. The game is text based and is like reading a book but you have to choose what to do in the key moments. Give it a try if you can. Send me a PM if you want to and i will tell you how to get it in english but if you google around you will find it.( hongfire and mirror moon)

  • @LreoSan OK I'll remember that. I'm making a small list of games to play this summer. I'll probably play Planescape: Torment again, too :).

For a true underdog of gaming with incredible storylines written entirely in text: Heroes of Might and Magic 4. Some of the best plots I've ever seen in a videogame.

You'll hear everyone say it's shit, and the worst in its series. But hey, those guys don't like Planescape: Torment either, right?

  • People these days just stare blankly when I mention this game.

I wish there were words adequate enough to describe how it made me feel, how it moved me, and how it affected me to my very core.

    Yea, It's that good.

  • @EntreriSeraph I'd recommend you not to explain this game to anyone, unless you have a couple of hours free. It's so original and deep that one has to see it to understand its concept.

"Oh look, its the walking deader again..."

    "You know me?"

"Oh yes. When the walking deader asks me to get him into the tower, I help him out and get some jink."

    "How?"

"I kill him. But the walking deader always returns. Oh, yes."

    :F

  • @EntreriSeraph

my exact feelings towards this game.

It changed my way of thinking, living, perceiving things.

Best game in the entire universe. Too bad people don't play it because of GRAPHICS GRAPHICS and WALLS OF TEXT TEXT TEXT NO ACTION.

    Well, that's their problem.

  • @3v11 I tried to give you at least 10 vote ups. Alas...

  • How I love Planescape, the tabletop RPG setting and the PC game.

  • What can change the nature of a man?

  • Best game ever.... I'm planning on getting a tattoo of the symbol of torment (the symbol above).

  • and everyone's got it.

  • @fridman007 It's been done.

  • I did this tattoo not for the sake of originality... Only because this game (and the symbol of torment that represent it) means something to me.

    I enjoyed it that much!

  • @fridman007

of what use will it be to you? +2 charisma? ;)

  • @fridman007 lol, i have it already on my right arm, except the runes are white as tears, its better imo that way

  • @fridman007 hey good plan! :D

  • listening to this...

man i've got to play this game again!

  • Can somebody please tell me what exactly that image is? I don't remember.

  • Symbol of torment.

  • This game has one of the weirdest settings of all times, you wander across fantastical and terrifying worlds where laws of reality, time, space and logic are twisted and fascinating. And this music encapsulates the feeling fantasticaly.

If there would ever be a game or movie about Kult. I'd say Mark Morgan should compose the soundtrack :)

  • Yup. You even help an alley (yes, a supposedly inanimate object) give birth.

  • I tried to convince a friend of mine (who's RPG fanatic like me) to play PS:T but with no effect. Dumbass - all I can say.

Btw, Mark Morgan is genius!! The guy earned my respect with Fallout's music, but what he did with PS:T is just unbelievable: Main Theme, Deionarra's Theme, Anna's Theme, Fortress of Regrets...

  • Fortress of Regrets.... that brings back memories...

    SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!

Heck i was able to merge with Transcendetal One(sorry if I misspelled his name), best Ending

  • @premier6666:

There are mods (search for widescreen mod, etc) that upgrade the visual side of PS:T.

It is still well worth playing - and much better than BG2.

  • Best storyline ever...

if you are reading this and havent played this masterpiece yet, you are a fool

  • Best damn RPG ever made! Was even better than Baldur's Gate II in my opinnion.

  • agree. :)

  • @Mii85

    Both Baldur's Gates.

  • I feel sad that I can't ever play this game (and BG1) due to being spoiled by playing BG2 first and not being able to handle the downgrade in the engine.

  • Baldurs Gate 1 can be played with the Baldurs Gate 2 engine. Google it.

  • To be accurate, it's called Baldur's Gate Tutu. I prefer the original, but to each their own.

  • Prefer the original too, minus two things, the character AI lacks intelligence, i.e doesn't push past eachother, takes unnecessary detours as a result:P And the lack of healing on rest.

  • This was A-W-E-S-O-M-E! <3

  • All of the IE games are very intelligent games - and they're beautifully put together. They're almost impossible to review they're so full of depth and so rich in detail.

P : T is haunting though - in terms of storyline it has no equal.

i don't understand the prejudice against D&D rules - it's the best gaming system ever devised.

  • I actually think that while PST had the more complete story, Avellone's characterization had improved in KOTOR 2. Kreia, Atton, even the Exile was less of a blank slate than he/she could have been.

  • I rate P : T and the two BGs equally, for different (and probably personal) reasons :

I played BG (1) first and it was what I'd always been waiting for - I'll never forget it.

P : T came out of the blue. I hadn't even heard it was in development. The story in P : T haunts me even today. It's unequalled in terms of depth in video games - with only (imo) Deus Ex to rival it.

Then BG2 came along. This was a fantastic game. Everything has gone downhill since.

  • Feel exactly the same. Those three games are simply the best ever.

  • I remember seeing the trailer for PS:T on my copy of Baldur's Gate... never got around to playing it, I was too busy giving my every waking hour to the BG games and have now made my way to that king of all time-drainers... college. If I could find this game and the time to play it, I would easily get into it and not give a crap about the aged engine. Playing these games was so engrossing, it was like reading a masterpiece novel that you could *live*. Unrivalled by any game today or tomorrow.

  • @mrchuckmorris Planescape: Torment is not a game. It's a. interactive book, one that can change your life.

  • @abcdefgh123qw the best story in a rpg ever.

  • Indeed, I don't doubt it. BioWare/Blizzard/Wizards of the Coast make some EPIC games... or should I say *used* to make some EPIC interactive legends. This is why I think video games will one day completely wipe out movies from entertainment.

I wonder how much PS:T goes for on Amazon right now? (checks as soon as done with comment)

  • Of all the games out there to rival Planescape: Torment you choose The Witcher?

  • The Enhanced Edition is actually really good at times. Ultimately falls short of being comparable story-wise to PS:T, but nevertheless a good try.

Now, Mask of the Betrayer, on the other hand, manages to keep up the whole way, assuming there's a theoretical upper limit for how good game plots can be and not be PS:T.

  • This is the best occidental RPG to ever come out. It beats the BGs, Icewind Dales, Gothics or Fallouts. The only game to rival Torment is The Witcher. These two titles share narrative similarities but i think The Witcher is only possible because all this other Rpgs set a series of standards the Witcher came to break.

  • While it is above and beyond all Fallout wannabes (3, BOS, tactics), the writing is of similar quality in 1 and 2. What's more, both have deconstructive, pessimism-ladden worlds, several layers of plot/information and multiple ways to solve problems. Text-wise though, P:T is almost an interactive novel.

Although.. Witcher? I liked the witcher, but it didn't have as much text.

  • the bitcher does not even come close to the BGs the Fallouts, and please4 drop the Gothics lol, it dont belong here, it's a piece of craped compared, the only statement i agree with you is that PST is in a class of it's own because of it's storyline, so is Xenogears for the very same reason, other games can get outdated, but because PST has a good narrative and storyline it's worth playing no matter how old it is.

  • WHAT?! How dare you even put that steaming pile in the same sentence as Planescape. Torment?!

  • This is IMO the best game ever. It changes the way you view many things, it makes you become interested in philosophy. I really hope that i'll see such a great creation again in my life.

  • Good theme music!

  • Having played FFVII and enjoyed it I can say that this beats it - and so did the two BGs, and the Icewind Dales too. The IE games were the best RPGs This one was the deepest of them all. RPGs the like of which we're unlikely to see again. Writing from a different planet - sheer quality all the way through. Amazing imagination - this game (and all the IE games) had so much personality.

  • I think that you can't compare FF and BG/Planescape. This is so different story, so different approach. All of them are equal, all of them are the best, all of them are genial.

  • I think you can most certainly compare FF and the Black Isle RPGs of the late 1990s / early 2000s. The Black Isle games are superior in every respect -- story, characters, writing, challenge, replayability. The only category that the Final Fantasy games are superior in is hype.

Final Fantasy VII bored me to tears. Of course, I played it after playing Torment, the Baldur's Gates, and the Fallouts. All RPGs except Arcanum have seemed weak since then.

  • I played FFVII on the PlayStation and it was the best game for the PS at the time - along with Tomb Raider. A few years later I bought a PC and invested in BG(1). That was the high point of my 25-year long gaming experience (which began in the days of home computers !) - perhaps .. until P:T and BG2 (not to mention the also brilliant IDs). I wouldn't want to diss FFVII but the IE games are less childish and more profound imo. It amazes me that this formula was dropped in favour of NWN ....

  • Thumbs up, FF always makes me feel like I don't have any real options.

  • @melosebrainuhoh I don't think you can compare FF games and Black Isle RPG's. To me, in any FF game I've played it's been nothing more than an interactive storybook. You don't have a role to play, your character is chosen for you from the off set. That's not an RPG.

In Black Isles RPG's, you choose who your character is and how they act. THAT is the true heart of any RPG, not blocks of text. Story is important yes, but without personalised PC's, it's worthless. That's where JRPGs go wrong imo.

  • @melosebrainuhoh

    Tried the Witcher?

  • @melosebrainuhoh only The Witcher was good since BG and Torment

  • @melosebrainuhoh Then perhaps you should play more than one 'Final Fantasy', because you're selling it short.

  • @XeftCore I played seven of them. Three through six ranged from good to very good. But none of them can hold a candle to Torment.

  • @melosebrainuhoh I agree on you regarding FF. However, there are still some Squaresoft (not SquareEnix!) RPGs playing at the same league as the old BioWare games: Chrono Trigger (1996, SNES), Chrono Cross (1999, PS1) and Xenogears (1998, PS1).

  • @melosebrainuhoh Although I agree I agree that Torment is vastly superior in terms of writing, story you need to apperciate one thing, In terms of gameplay FF7 is far far superior, the games story and characters aren't to bad either, if a little cliche. That doesn't mean that FF7 isn't a 'good' game they are very different games. Im not a FF fanboy, Im not a Torment fanboy either but the fact remains that both games aren't without their flaws.

  • @dirtmcjoebuger What's so good about FF7's gameplay? Wander through dungeon after dungeon going through the same few agonizingly slow random battles over and over again, mashing the attack button nonstop since most fights require no real strategy. Walking through cities talking to people yet having next to no dialogue options and no moral freedom. Booooooooring.

  • @melosebrainuhoh Just because FF7 isnt as immersive and in depth as Torment doesn't mean that its crap. My point is that Torment-though one of my fave games- has some major flaws, the sheer amount of text and the dull and repetitve combat being the main 2, not good game design! But the Immersive world/story originality, characters, score etc more than make up for its faults. regarding your question, the Materia system is the highlight gameplay feature elminating the need for classes e,g Mage etc

  • no i can compare and FF7 while good is slightly overated? I if you wanna compare, compare ff7 with Xenogears, a game which practically blows FF7 out of the water with it's storyline, but grossly underated, same as planescape torment, ever wondered why games with great storyline like these can be so underated, xenogears to ff7, torment to the Baldur's gate series, reason? Narrative, kids have too short attention span to follow rpgs with great narratives, so they gave up in the first hour or so.

  • Seconded... I dont know why people often chose graphic over storyline and gameplay

  • Words of the wise... words of the wise.

  • Reminds me of Age of Wonders music... a little.

  • When I heard this the hair stood up on the back of my neck.......I was 13 again....

  • Why would anyone compared WRPGs to JRPGs is beyond me.

  • I was talking about the music score compared to those two other games. Does it compare?

I know Beyond Good and Evil has a good sountrack as well.

  • @BlackSephir No shit...

  • Easily.

  • @MekaGabe

Apples and oranges. Chrono Chross and Final Fantasy are both great, Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate etc. are also great, but they cannot be compared because of how different they are. Suffice to say that they are great in their own ways and styles.

  • @MekaGabe Yes, in every conceivable way, yes.

  • @MekaGabe yes. yes it does. : )

  • This game was beautiful and TNO is the most genius piece of writing ever. Bar none.

  • imho, the best soundtrack for the best CRPG ever made.

  • man this is song from Planescape- Torment, gr8 rpg of that time, so stfu about kotor

  • I love this theme.

  • makes me wanna save the day =D

    I love this sound track

  • Best game ever. I've had the symbol of torment as my computer wallpaper for years now, and I doubt its going to change anytime soon.

  • The obvious answer to why this game doesn't get the credit it deserves is that it didn't appeal to the mainstream crowd. :(

    Great game, love the dialogue.

  • I got that game, but never played it. Maybe I should start it right after Empire: Total War :D So long Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are my favourite RPGs beside Zelda: A link to the past, Secret of Mana and Morrowind.

  • It's the best RPG of all time. Better that BG 1 and 2, fallout 1 2 and 3, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, and so on.

IVe beaten all those, and Planescape torment is the best. though fallout is a very close second.

  • I agree. I did all of them too but Planescape owns them all.

  • Why you say? Faerun is the most popular universe, Torment is for the small load of fans. Who can make a game of such quality as Torment? Bioware, with some of their ex-Black Isle personnel.

And since EA owns Bioware there will be Faerun and Faerun again, then again and once more. You know why.

  • It's FIFA (or any other franchise full of re-hashes) all over again!

  • Obsidian would be best suited. They have the game's principal writer, and let's face it, the writing MADE this game.

  • I dunno....while Obsidian has made well lets be honest their best work is KotOR II and it was a really good game Its nowhere close to PST. Besides....have you seen NWN II? I tried to replay it i managed to do the original campaign over again with a mod but couldent make it through the expansion. I cant even make myself start up the latest one....

  • I liked KOTOR 2 better than Planescape Torment, but maybe that's because I played it first and played Planescape waaay after its release date.

  • Haha i played KOTOR 2 before PST also in fact i only started my first PST run about a year or two ago? One of the best decisions i made that year let me tell you :P

  • actually, the expansion *mask of the betrayer* was quite good, at least on par wit KotOR II, but the original campaign and Storm of Zehir were...meh

  • Are you guys serious? KotOR II is great too but no way near kotOR I and not to mention Planescape Torment.

  • Well, I can only speak for myself, of course, and while both KOTOR games are magnificent, I personally prefer 2 because the tone of it and the writing simply feel more... immersive, I suppose. Plus, you know, Kreia. I'm poor at putting this into words, sadly.

  • You sir, a are intriguing minority

  • Well, thank you! Very kind of you. I think, anyway. But I wasn't aware it was a rare belief. I'd say 'I expect most Star Wars classicists prefer KOTOR.' but I've liked Star Wars for a long time and I still prefer The Sith Lords... so... yeah. I suppose they can only replicate the same story pattern so many times (with interesting nuances or not) before you want something rather different.

  • Well, here's to hoping the new KOTOR MMO will make all of us happy!

  • Faerún has its share of good games... BG1&2, Eye of the Beholder 1&2...

  • Fuck no, Bioware nowadays is pure shit, I vote Obsidian. Bioware keeps reusing the same scheme (4 places to go, visit all, final battle) since Kotor. I vote Obsidian.

  • @NyagatoDesu Have you *played* Alpha Protocol?

  • @lolfreudian I woder what are you trying to prove with it? That Obsidian have poor mangement? it's true. Also it seems that they can't create their own "universe' from scratch. But it doesn't make them bad, at least story wise. DAO is rather boring too stereotyped.

  • Definately the most brilliant, complex and mesmerizing RPG ever created. The Planescape Universe has almost endless creative potential. I still wonder why it never got the atention it deserves...

  • Yeah. There are few games with such inner power as PS.

  • they should have used that symbol (in the vid) as the box art instead of using the nameless one

  • That's an excellent idea and probably would have drastically improved sales. The box art was terrible.

  • I personally like the cover art.

  • Fucking awsome! :)

  • I definitly LOVE the game and the ost... Thanks for this uplaod !

  • I can hear a theme from movie "Predator" in it...

  • about 1:20

  • That's what I thought as well :D

  • torment and the bg series were so much more adventures and better than NWN... The old games where about story and that's what made it feel as close to dnd as any computergame out there... Plz make a new BG or Torment... no 3d. Same old view, better graphics( like titan quest) and sound and bigger, with lots of story and roleplaying! It would be fairly cheap compared to shit games like wow.

  • I agree with every way :) New games are only the shadows of old rpg games like BG, PT or ID.

  • I would reccomend "Temple of Elemental Evil" It seems to combine good graphics with the old BG feel, though it is too small to be a match for BG. It does have a good modding community, though, and a relatively recent mod is "Keep on the Borderlands". w w w . co8 . o r g is the relevant site. (remove the gaps, of course)

  • Yea I bought it when it came out and the graphics and sound are great and it does have some of the bg feel and it is even better with the co8 patches. BUT it is not a bit too hack and slash for my taste and as you said too small...

  • If only they would make BG3...

  • hear hear!

  • Comment removed

  • Unfortunately, Baldur's Gate 3 isn't going to happen. However, Bioware is returning to their roots and developing a spiritual successor BG.

    Dragon Age.

Hopefully it turns out to be good.

  • We need to promote again roleplaying on table and learn from that.

  • the part at 4:38 is my favorite

  • There are those who own Planescape Torment and those that hope to.

No other game I know of makes you look at YOU to decide what to do. Others try but games are so dumbed down for the simple minded masses now to make money it's a losing proposition.

CGI has almost done to games what it has already done to film, taken away the audience thought process participation.

We will see a renessance but not for 5 years.

  • I own it.

My disks eat the big one, though, and my computer runs on vista. I'll need to invest in a crappy computer + new disks since I feel dirty torrenting such a great game... lame.

  • I love this game so much I am posting a comment just because I am so -thrilled- there are others out there who liked the game as much as I did. I agree whole-heartedly with Mizmaa--you word it perfectly.

  • Mar
