"You Keep.............Taking My Love........And Leaving.....Me ^..^ sk
OMG I went to this I was in the 7th row behind Jerry Brown. This was an outstanding concert is it available on dvd? Do you have Emmylou Harris Love Hurts? I still have the tshirt I wonder how much it's worth
My dad just told me about how Lowell George bought my mom and her friends drinks in the late 70's, so that they wouldn't tell anyone else who he was, at some small club in RI. I guess they were the only people in the joint who recognized him.
How many ppl ever heard of Lowell George? Or Little Feet for that matter? But a lot of mainstream artist from the 70's did. And it was through them that I came to appreciate what a fine song writer he was and band they were.....(The same can be said about Steve Goodman, too!)
If you watch close early (0:32) in the video, you'll see briefly Eric Kaz, songwriter of Blowing Away in the background on keyboards. To Ronstadt's left on the stage on acoustic guitar and harmony is Craig Fuller of Pure Prairie League and AmericanFlyer (with Kaz). Kaz and Fuller made a great album as a duo after the dissolution of American Flyer.
Fuller went on to replace Lowell George for a time in Little Feat after George's untimely passing. It wasn't the same, but he did a good job.
@DarkOnyx24 - I've been romanced dined and danced Crazy nights and wild times But my life has lost its mystery Love is blind and it cannot find me I'm blowing away Shadows take my love and leave I'm blowing away Shadows keep taking my love and leaving me And I have cast aside my foolish pride And I'm going down for the last time And I have searched this earth And I've sailed these seas Love is blind and it cannot find me Repeat chorus
@dldwiggins True, but Linda has such a powerful voice.. I like both women's voices, but few could belt out songs as effortlessly as Linda back then? I'm not so sure it was the mix.. Linda sang the soprano part, and Bonnie alto. Linda just opened up and let it go...She couldn't help it.. Bonnie is just as talented, just in a different way...
All too often, I hear critics confuse vocal raspiness with soulfullness. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Both of these singers are singing soulfully. Linda's voice is purer; Bonnie's more grainey or raspy or whatever you want to call it. If you want to hear something more "nuanced" by Linda listen to her recording of I Never Will Marry with Dolly Parton. It's on youtube.
No were does Linda hog the mike. When Bonnie is singing solo, Linda stands back and smiles. When cued to sing harmony, she does exactly what is needed. Both voices can be discerned and neither is overpowering the other. Iti's called harmonizing.
Those who happen upon this video without an agenda recognize the talents of these great artists and how they work to complement eachother in what is an outstanding performance despite the poor audio in this recording. Others like Allipkable who is accusing Linda of "hogging the mike" and Cali4yadreaming who says Bonnie's voice has more "nuance and soul" either don't know what they're talking about or need to listen again.
@MOONONTHERIVER I think they're both ( the posters saying Linda's voice is stronger) absolutely right.. I like both artists, and Bonnie does bring such a warm, touching and richness to her work. On the other hand, Linda can sing softly, but when she sings a powerful song, using her full voice, it's like bells ringing over the songbirds.....
A wonderful song (despite the poor sound in the recording) I agree with others that Linda has a powerful and wide ranging voice but Bonnie's voice has so much more nuance and soul to it. She can take a ballad and make it weep.
I happened to be at this benifit for Lowell, my brother and I got some will-call tickets that someone didn't show up for. As I recall Linda's mike went out on one of the songs they were singing with Emilou Harris (and I think Nicolette Larson as well) and you could still hear her voice on the other mics. Man she could sing. As I recall Micheal McDonald and the rest of the Doobie Brothers were there too. What a show.
So many comments...I guess you can't say enough good things about this song... the quality of the performers and the effort they put into it. Bonnie is so laid back that for her it's effort. Linda, I can't say enough except don't strain your voice. Is that Lyle doing the low part? It's great, he's solid... Ya'll Do it again, please.
These two women were pioneers in their genre, which at the time was mainly a boy's club. Linda and Bonnie set the table for many women who followed and continue to follow in their footsteps.
Craig Fuller & Eric Kaz composed & released an eponymous superb album on Columbia/CBS in 1978. Sadly it tanked, but included these titles: Feel That Way Again, Cry Like A Rainstorm, You Take A Heart, Let The Fire Burn All Night, 'Til You Come Back, Annabella, The Ways Of A Woman, Fool For You, Restless Sea, Annabella (Reprise). Most were hits for other artists.
@wjpalp yeah I saw the FEat with these guys as the opening band at the field house at University of NH in Durham Oct 1st 1978. I was in the second row. greatness that was. PLus you are right that kaz/fuller album was very tood. I bought it the next day. i wish I still had it. "Feel that Way Again" was such a cool tune.
You can almost feel the emotion at this concert. Lowell was one of greatest and they all loved him, to get that kind of affection and respect from the likes of these two is amazing.
Been a Ronstadt fan since I first heard "Different Drum" in the 60's. To me a great singer can sing songs that you would not normally listen to and mesmerize you. Linda can do that. I enjoy Amy W's music but her voice is not in the same league with either of these ladies.
@RhythmUniverse Yes, Linda and k.d. would indeed be good combo - hadn't thought of that before. They could do a great version of 'Blue Bayou' together.
@searcherboy Oh yeah! Man, what harmonies they'd get out of that! Let's hope we get to see that. Did you ever hear k.d.'s original style of country. So legit. "Big Boned Gal" and other great original Country stuff. She also did a song, "Tears don't Care Who Cry Them" a cappella. Breathtaking.
There are no effects on their vocals. Sounds awesome. They don't need it like these new artists. This was back when you had to have talent to make it. Not just look great.
What an amazing pair of vocalists. Linda's delicate, yet powerful voice alongside Bonnie's smoky bluesy voice. Incredible. I could listen to them all day long.
Let's not forget to give credit where credit is due...Eric Kaz is a FABULOUS songwriter and both of these amazingly talented women used his genius. "Love Has No Pride", is another example of his gift. Best thing here though, are the harmonies. Heart wrenching, achingly beautiful, perfection.
and don't forget that the beautiful wonderful Jojo Billingsley..original Lynryd Skynryd Honkette passed away after a battle with cancer, this week..6/28/10...set of pipes that just ripped...rest in peace Jojo...you were the real deal on this old sorry earth...
I have to watch this crazy video, at least once a month...I love Bonnie, with her bossy hand on hip..the little sway...and Linda. Just the opposite. Looks like she might cry...when she sings "My life has lost it's mystery. Love is blind, and it can not find me."
Who even comes close these days? Sheryl Crow? Am at a loss to name one that comes close, let alone two..Best show I ever saw was Bonnie Raitt, and Freebo, at the Trubadore, musta been 1972..acccck I AM old.
@ranchroper1974 "..bossy hand on hip..." "looks like she might cry..." amen, you got brother; also around 2.13 watch Linda move her shoulders and then downward with her hand "wailing to God" as one poster put it
These women are way better than that ugly slut Amy Winehouse. All the legacy that Winehouse has, is a drugged induced stupor and a hocked up voice which scares the chicken wild from their coops.
How in the name of jumping jack flash can you people even think to put amy nuthouse in a league with these two timeless ladies. What are you, 11 years old?
Linda has one of the clearest voices of all time, and Bonnie is just so laid back and sings with the sense of the earth and heavens.
That nuthouse woman could not even carry either of those two ladies dirty laundry bag, unless it had booze and coke in it!
@B52sguy That's just your opinion. They are diffirent but Amy Winehouse is a great vocalist in her own right. So what if she takes drugs or drink, she can still sing. Check out her singing in the BBC's live lounge. I'm a fan of Bonnie Raitt but she's diff from A Winehouse, so you can't compare oranges to apples.
@bloobear1 That is why we all, most of us anyway, have opinions. Winehouse has no business at all being compared to some of the greatest one thousand female singers.
@B52sguy Well I think that she does as do quite a lot of people but she's no better than Bonnie Raitt. They just sing different genres. It would be a strange old World if we all liked the same thing eh? :-)
Right on brother! And if I might say there was only one other woman missing from that stage when it comes to comparisons... that would be Emmy Lou Harris!!! Sure, on less than both hands I could name a few more but "nuthouse" wouldn't even come close!!! For starts, Norah Jones of current times and then heading back to like Nancy Wilson, Edie Brickell, Stevie Nicks, and such and so on. You said it all in one word though when it comes to voices like Linda's... "timeless". :)
@SuperSwanny66 Thanks for the nice comment, my friend. I agree with Emmy Lou and the others you mention, and I would also add Agnetha Faltskog of ABBA. She is the blonde one, but there are so many others.
@B52sguy I like your style! It is too bad that there is such a lack of true talent. Linda was not only a fantastic pop singer but she also sang some great Spanish tunes as well, as well as the classics.
@B52sguy I like your style! It is too bad that there is such a lack of true talent. Linda was not only a fantastic pop singer but she also sang some great Spanish tunes as well, as well as the classics. I shared your comment with my wife and she laughed like crazy. (She used to sing for a living.)
@freddiemesquit1 Happy your wife liked my comment. As well as yourself, of course. People in general do not appreciate the epitome of talent these ladies, as well of the songvwriters have contributed to all of music.
Have you ever noticed how so much new music is grounded in music of the past?
For a wild and incongruent example, check out "Underwater Love" by Faith No More, and "Welcome Me Love" by the Brooklyn Bridge.
@B52sguy What a shame to lose Johnny Maestro who certainly had one of the best voices I ever heard. When he sang 16 Candles it sounded like it did when he sang it back in 1958 when I first heard him sing it with The Crests. I also liked Step By Step. Comments I keep reading about the old rock and roll singers is the purity of their voices - they knew the basics about singing, including pitch, and a sense of timing. They did it without "electronic help" or gimmicks. Re: Blowing Away - Great!
You right. Fuller recorded with the song's author Eric Kaz and no doubt performed this song live hundreds of times with Kaz and others. He seems to be totally getting off, almost dazed at moments, and at times in almost pure ecstasy.
Checking the video again, that appears to be the song's author Eric Kaz on piano at 1:43? He and Fuller released an album together the previous year (1978), and it looks like Kaz for sure. He penned hits for Bonnie and Linda both ("Cry Like a Rainstorm").
@badbadkingjohn Yes, it is impossible to miss that. Also at :57....what passion, like she is wailing to heaven above. Then at 2:14 where she drops her hand hard, and shakes her head side to side "You keep taking my love...". The great Ronstadt.
@badbadkingjohn I keep coming back to this video just to see the guy 'in the presence of deity' as you say. Can you imagine? I mean, can you imagine being him, doing this tune at this gig?
And on guitar and additional harmonies is Craig Fuller (Pure Prarie League) who would take over the vocal duties for Little Feat when they reformed after a 10 year hiatis after the death of the musical genious Lowell George.
Anyone still searching for great new music in a similar vein should check Freebo (bonnies bassplayer) recent albums, just great folk music and he does amazingly intimate live shows around the country all the time. Check his website freebomusic
from the 1979 Lowell George memorial concert at the Forum.. Topanga came on a bus filled with people wearing overalls as a tribute to the great guitarist that lived, worked, and played in the beautiful hills above Topanga Canyon
In this foul year of oil spills and lady gaga, this kind of stuff is a small ray of light.
I want to go back to the time when people bought quality BIG speakers and turned down the lighting and turned the sound up and just....listened to the power of the music and let the magic over take you where it would.
I was at Merriweather Post Pavillion the night Jackson recorded Running on Empty and it was just so great to hear the performers up close
@tbc0460 oh, do I remember...if you saw Jackson Browne, then you must know Rosemary Butler, she sang backup for him, along with Nicolette Larson, back in the days. Rosemary just did a little gig in Thousand Oaks..Sorta makes me proud, that our generation produced TIMELESS music..the kids who listen to our Oldies, all say the same thing...WOW!..Just watched a special on Ed Sullivan/rock performances..all the ones we love..even little Eric Burden..whooo. KCET specials.
Ronstadt has one of the most beautiful voices ever, its a voice I never tire of. However to suggest that Amy Winehouse is less of a talent is truly missing something. Winehouse is a singer/songwriter who sings with a unique style that sets her apart from her contempories & indeed most of the greats that have gone before her. In my opinion for musicianship in a vocalist you would have to go back to Nina Simone or Billie Holiday and I really dont think Ronstadt compares to them.
@ranchroper1974 Right. I get so tired of all the melisma style of singing today, which to me just says that a 'singer' can't hold on too long to a note. It's a cheat & a trick, and while it might have a place every once in awhile, a singer depending on it just shows me that s/he doesn't have much talent otherwise. Linda R. is sheer talent & she didn't have to rely on vocal smoke & mirrors like too many current 'singers' do as well as their over-reliance on lip synching for 'live' shows.
You got that right! We grew up in the best decades that ever existed on this planet - the fifties thru the seventies ( truly the Wonder Years) - and were fortunate enough to have some of the greatest music ever written/performed as the background to our lives. And we thought it would go on forever!
I feel so sorry for our children and grandchildren, who grow up in this counterfeit world today, where loudness is mistaken for talent. Where trash is marketed as treasure.

What a concept! Have musicians actually playing music while singers belted out lyrics that didn't have the word bitch or hoe in them.

Am at a loss to name one that comes close, let alone two..Best show I ever saw was Bonnie Raitt, and Freebo, at the Trubadore, musta been 1972..acccck I AM old.
nighty night..

I'm a fan of Bonnie Raitt but she's diff from A Winehouse, so you can't compare oranges to apples.
bloobear1 1 year ago
@bloobear1 That is why we all, most of us anyway, have opinions. Winehouse has no business at all being compared to some of the greatest one thousand female singers.
Thanks for your feedback.

@B52sguy Well I think that she does as do quite a lot of people but she's no better than Bonnie Raitt. They just sing different genres. It would be a strange old World if we all liked the same thing eh? :-)
bloobear1 1 year ago
@B52sguy
"timeless". :)
SuperSwanny66 1 year ago
@SuperSwanny66 Thanks for the nice comment, my friend. I agree with Emmy Lou and the others you mention, and I would also add Agnetha Faltskog of ABBA. She is the blonde one, but there are so many others.
Thank you,

@B52sguy I like your style! It is too bad that there is such a lack of true talent. Linda was not only a fantastic pop singer but she also sang some great Spanish tunes as well, as well as the classics.

@B52sguy I like your style! It is too bad that there is such a lack of true talent. Linda was not only a fantastic pop singer but she also sang some great Spanish tunes as well, as well as the classics. I shared your comment with my wife and she laughed like crazy. (She used to sing for a living.)
freddiemesquit1 1 year ago
@freddiemesquit1 Happy your wife liked my comment. As well as yourself, of course. People in general do not appreciate the epitome of talent these ladies, as well of the songvwriters have contributed to all of music.
Have you ever noticed how so much new music is grounded in music of the past?
For a wild and incongruent example, check out "Underwater Love" by Faith No More, and "Welcome Me Love" by the Brooklyn Bridge.
Thanks for your wifes laugh;

Re: Blowing Away - Great!

badbadkingjohn 1 year ago
You right. Fuller recorded with the song's author Eric Kaz and no doubt performed this song live hundreds of times with Kaz and others. He seems to be totally getting off, almost dazed at moments, and at times in almost pure ecstasy.
dropdowndog 1 year ago
Checking the video again, that appears to be the song's author Eric Kaz on piano at 1:43? He and Fuller released an album together the previous year (1978), and it looks like Kaz for sure. He penned hits for Bonnie and Linda both ("Cry Like a Rainstorm").

@dropdowndog excellent observations, you must hand it to him that he performs so well! BTW chedk out LR's moves around 2:08-2:10 in the video

@badbadkingjohn Yes, it is impossible to miss that. Also at :57....what passion, like she is wailing to heaven above. Then at 2:14 where she drops her hand hard, and shakes her head side to side "You keep taking my love...". The great Ronstadt.

@ranchroper1974 I know exactly what you mean pal.

KCET specials.
gotta love it.

@ranchroper1974 It's entirely possible to consider both Bonnie Raitt and Amy Winehouse talented. They aren't even comparable to each other.
Sweetthang9 1 year ago
