if i was a part of ecw and the idiots at tnn told me to plug this piece of shit i would spit in their fucking face and tell them to go fuck themselves, the only thing i would ever say about this garbage on tv is that no one should EVER watch it or even watch tnn at all.
@JDezi4 I think you could definitely call it a sport--though a very obscure one. It's not really sports "entertainment" on a massive scale because it stopped being televised about 10 years ago so people aren't sitting in front of their TVs watching this on a regular basis, and it's not like a lot of people are buying tickets. Now it's just something that people do for fun. But from watching this show as a kid, I always believed that it was scripted, if that's what you mean by "entertainment."
@JDezi4 This "rollerjam" stuff is scripted and is sports entertainment.
The roller derby shown in the movie Whip It (the Ellen Page/Drew Barrymore movie) is modern roller derby which is a legitimate, non-scripted sport that's growing more and more popular around the world.
@froodie It would have been better if it had been real, but at the time TNN was trying to get their hands on getting TV rights to a wrestling promotion, so they tried to demonstrate that there was a place for "sports entertainment" on their network.
i loved this back in the day. i remember watching my 1st and only ep cuz i didnt have cable and i was at my uncles place. so i recorded an ep. all i remember is some woman named blitz
Why didn't inline skates catch on? They seem to make so much more sense especially now that most roller derby is flat track - inlines corner far better on the flat.
@vijil Inlines go faster, but they don't actually corner all that well. To make this show work they actually had to increase the size of the track a fair bit larger than the banked tracks of the 70s-80s-90s. Derby skaters are starting to switch back to 45° plates from of the 10° plates you may be more familiar with. Inlines have been tried in derby, they really don't work all that well. It takes a lot of the stamina requirement out of the game. Speed becomes too easy to attain.
@PoobahSCRG Ah, thanks for the clarification. My thinking came from watching indoor short track speed skating on inlines, the corners are tight and the speeds are high.
In any case there do seem to be a few skate brands making some very nice derby quads these days. Bont being one at least for the boots.
@Allistertha53 There's about 20ish men's teams around the country. Men's derby is growing, but considerably slower than women's derby. Here's some reasons: More fans (men and women alike) want to see women play than men. This was just as true in the 1940s and 1970s as it is today. Men have more competitive sports (especially risky contact sports) available to them. And the inescapable and ugly thing is: Stereotypes about men who skate. Worse since the 1990s skateboarder vs rollerblader thing.
Yea I used to think it was real until I saw a flying clothes line off the barricade. After they I was like "heyyyyyyyyy wait a minute!" Even though I loved wrestling at the time, it was too over saturated for a great show.
RollerJam was awesome before they made it plainly obvious that they were doing pro wrestling-style storylines. A trade? Ok. Makes it seem like a legit sport. Long-lost half brothers?? Way too much. Smh.

Is this an actual sport or is this just sports entertainment?
