X-2 wasn't a sequel, it as a spin-off, square enix said it themselves, and same goes for FF7's Dirge of Cerberus, a Vincent spin-off, the only direct sequel for FF main titles I know of is for FF4's the after years, thats it
Took me 25 hours to get to the final boss. I love the game, but i wish they had put more things into it. According to me the story's too short and rushed.
Loved this game, def in my top 5. I judge a game on longevity, I played for over 86 hours and I loved it. Despite a more than tragic ending, I loved it! Can't wait till Versus 13!!!!!!!!!!!! Once that gets a release date I'm buying a PS3!
I accept that the story wasn't the best but I won't complain because they only had 1 and a half year to develop 13-2 because they don't want to keep delaying versus 13. Now if this game took years and the story was bad, then I would complain, because making RPG has to take years (at least 3 or more) to make the game perfect and long and fun. FF, to me, just isn't special any more. I'm not excited for this nor do I intend to buy this or even rent it. I played the demo and was bored. That simple. I was never a HUGE FF fan but the difference between the 90's and now is lucid.
Also I read somewhere that some dood at Square was telling us how he thought since CoD was pumping out games left and right that that's the direction he wants Square to take now...to make half-quality games quicker...and it feels like this is end of gaming.
i played the demo of this game on my ps3 and from what i see the graphics kinda lowerd down compared to the original whether this is due to the favor of the xbox 360 to handel it well this time or it's because it's free roam with bigger worlds to explore but the gameplay and fun of it will makes you forget everything the original had and even more but to me FFXII on the ps2 is still have the best battle system even with it's flaws.
The ending of this game made me want to cry. It makes Aerith's death in FFVII seem like a sing-along Disney movie. I certainly hope they make XIII-3 and bring everyone back, 'cause this is like ending FFVII after Sephiroth gets the Black Materia from Cloud, or FFVI after Kefka blows up the world. :(
LOL I pre-ordered this game right when it was announced and I'm still up to episode 2, I haven't played it much since I'm SUPER confused. can some one tell me if there are alternative endings which are due to your actions in the game or if its just like 13 when there's only one ending??
@NUKAxXxCOLA After and only after you finish the game, you will obtain an item (Fragment Skill) to view Alternative Endings (Paradox Scope), not only the ending of the game itself, but also in some specific choices you make along the way. There's nothing to be missed, since you can replay all levels anytime you want. Hell, you will have to do watch the paradoxes endings anyway.

oh man i almost forgot. now, i don't want to compare Final Fantasys as if they are suposed to be alike or ones supposed to be better than the other as that is not the case i think. i think each is supposed to be its own game as each time there is an entirely different world, entity, diety, or whatever. but one trait all final fantasys have shared i think (aside from chocobo, crystals, summons, etc.) is an awsome soundtrack. that marvelous trend ended with Final Fantasy XIII-2! you can't ask the question "is it better than the original" cause its not a remake its its own game. bad choice of words in my opinion. anyway, i'm on episode 4 right now and so far i feel like they tried to remedy ff13's excesive linearness(what?) by cutting up ff13-2's story in to pieces, balled it up then and threw it on a disc so it just randomly lay where it fell. then they sealed the story by shooving random stuff in the cracks. still it isn't all that bad really.
@Avl521S: Sadly I fell asleep on FF12 it was just so BORING....and that coming from me (I love Rpg's) is very bad. I just could not get into the story and the battlee system was awful.
I just wish the 13 series really allowed you to choose between the auto-like battle system and a more complex one. It's too easy for me to just switch paradigms all the time. I don't even have to figure out their weaknesses, because Libra is nearly automatic too. Other than that if you can get used to the music, it's still a pretty fun game.

Final Fantasy 13-2 is one of the better Final Fantasy's I have played, I thought the story was actually pretty. The only downfalls I found was that there are only two playable characters. The monster party system isn't bad I just prefer having all playable characters. The second problem I had was that Lightning isn't as playable as I would like but I am sure Square Enix is working on something with that part of the story.
I just wish FF XV returns the series to its best. To me all that is needed is an epic soundtrack, a villain that through his own means and story is as iconic as Sephiroth in power, personality and wickedness. A relatable hero with strong motivations. Characters like Balthier and Ashe from XII, Vincent from VII and Oerba Yun Fang from XIII. A love interest like Tifa or Yuna. A huge open world like Ivalice from XII with awesome cities and different settings to explore... And a cool battle system!
@rickspizzas Not IMHO. Caius was a great villain indeed, and he was portrayed as immensely powerful but to me his story as a villain was not as compelling as Sephiroth's. Not to mention overall, Sephiroth's wickedness and psychotic personality were imo better portrayed and more fitting for a main antagonist. I'd like to know what you mean by Caius' depth... IMO Sephiroth had more depth if you take into account Crisis Core, FF VII and Advent Children. He became an iconic villain at least for me.
@Avl521: And he was even talking about how he used Sarah and Noel for his own purpose. Sephiroth never used anyone (besides Cloud) to actually destroy everything. Caius is more calculating then Sephiroth that is why Caius won (so far).
@Eternalsummersong Yes, Caius got what he wanted so far (To be Continued...) I'm not denying that, he's a great villain and his voice actor has an awesomely evil voice. However I find Sephiroth's whole story of being a superhero among SOLDIER, his descent into madness, Nibelheim in flames, Aerith's murder and his rise to ultimate power and then his rebirth in Advent Children far more striking and compelling. It's just what I feel. Somehow Sephiroth is still my favorite villain ever.
@Avl521:The thing is I never liked Aerith (I'm sorry if you like her) When she took off on her own I KNEW Sephiroth was going to kill her. Don't get me wrong Sephiroth is a freaking awesome villain but the way Caius used everyone played them like puppets and end the end he tricked them into thinking he was dead when he actually made Noel kill the goddess. He didn't burn down buildings but he killed a Goddess and ended the world (as far as we know) killing billions of people.

XIII had an excellent battle system so they're headin in the right direction with that. I think they last couple of games they've focused it all on a new battle system and HD graphics so hopefully they will get back making excellent storylines

@Aatjuuh I think XII had it right with the hunting for marks. There were so many, and when you take into account one of those marks was Yiazmat... I just found that amazing. I think VII if you take into account Before Crisis, Crisis Core, VII, Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus had the best storyline, soundtrack and most iconic characters. Seriously, I can't think of better heroes than Zack and Cloud and better villains than Sephiroth and Genesis.
@Aatjuuh However the one I had most fun with in terms of gameplay and time consumption was definetly XII. Over 400 hours in 2 playthroughs. It was an unbelievably good game for me, one of the best I've ever played. And Balthier was one of the best party members in any FF IMHO.
@Avl521 I'm not english and I finished the game at the age of 7! When I was 16 I still had my memorycard and took a look on what I did at that age.. And I was like; holy crap!? Did I manage to become this good at the age of 7!? Without understanding the english language?! Hahaha when I think of FFVII it's a lot of nostalgic thoughts :p And I still think Cloud is the best hero, Sephiroth the best villian and a good "love" story in it.. They really should consider remaking FFVII :)
@xlordbimpyx Dude, Versus is part of the Final Fantasy XIII universe. And yeah, the gameplay looks awesome so far but you can't be sure if Noctis will turn out to be an awesome hero and you can't tell if the story will be good and there are many things we don't know yet about it. So it's too early to say Versus will be the game that will return glory to Final Fantasy.
@Avl521 VS's snyposis is already out. The basic plot has been rleased for a while now. If you go on the FF wiki and look at the VS page you see everything for VS. based on that info, i'm saying VS is the real deal. plus the cutscenes which have been shown. They already said the story is nothing like 13/13-2. its more grown up, darker, and based more on reality than some carttonish weird stuff that belongs in shows like Ben 10.

@fan977 I like Final Fantasy games, however, I believe Skyrim is easily good enough to be as fun as most Final Fantasy games. Honestly, In the 110 hours I spent on the game, I only encountered 2 glitches, one of the graphical, one of them funny.
Originally I was waiting for XIII to buy a PS3, after looking at the strategy guide, decided against it.. but I was mainly waiting for Verses.. Then this one peaked my interest. Bought a ps3 over the weekend. Blame Noel, different from some past male leads, not dark, brooding, whiny. IMO Noel looks like an adult version of Sora, possible acting like an adult Sora would. Positives: smaller party, the healing at the end of battles, monster training, multi endings, bright colors. Negatives: ATB
XIII's story is not bad at all. The characters are amazing. They have actualy human qualities. You get an attachment to them. The story makes you consider your actions, and remember each good quality of each human being, even though they not be the most normal person in the world.
@Substep247 Skyrim is a fantastic RPG. But not like the turn base gameplay of 13-2. I hated 13the because of how linear it was. 13-2 is so much better than. Some Skyrim fanboys feel threaten by a new major RPG.

I have this game...and have a social life with real people who also own the game. Get this...all of them liked the music, but the singing was viewed to be absolutely awful, but atleast they're trying new things.
Checked this out to see if it improved at all, since i played FF13 for a few hours and thought it was the biggest piece of shit ever. Obviously it hasn't changed. Run 3 ft, battle, tap x a few times, win, run 2 ft, 10 minute cutscene, run 4 ft, battle, tap x, etc. Square needs to realize we want to PLAY the game, not have everything automated. Give us another FF7 or X, where we actually were DOING something. square were losing it around ff12, now they've fucked the series up.

in all honesty...i bought this game cause hope grew up...but it really isn't all that bad. sure, the story sucked a bit and doesn't seem to have anything to do with it's prequel but hey, give it a chance. the gameplay is great, and the exploration is amazing. this game was made to further explore lightning's character, but to me, it seemed as though serah's character was further developed instead. that aside, this game is very good. in my opinion of course.
squareenix needs to get punched in the head. when ever they do something, they have to do it absolutely one way or absolutely another, and that's just talking about the game play. the battle system and the game play is actually pretty cool, if not original. but the story is just as awkward and misplaced. i found myself not caring about what was going on or any of the characters. also, the writing and voice acting is bad. then again that could always be the case when comparing with games like HL2

Wish the story did more? What more did you expect, guys? Something tells me XIII had a sense of linearity to it for a reason. The damn story was a focal point without so many things to have you stray off the path. I love sidequests and open-ended stuff as much as anyone. But with things to do with different timelines, one has to expect that you're not gonna get something entirely concrete.
I have to admit X and X-2 were horrible. The battle system and the story. Final Fantasy 13 came back with a bang. No more obligated annoying fighting, you can actually engage enemies. Don't bash it until you play it

Thank God they still make Final Fantasy games. All other RPG's fail in comparison when it comes to story. I'm not thrilled about only having two characters but 13-2 looks interesting. Most other JRPG's are horrible and childish on the new gen systems. I hate how people bash 13 while Elder Scrolls is the same Middle Ages dungeon crawling minimal story line crap. When will they understand that RPG's should never be first person. Dark Souls kicks Skyrim's ass anyday!
The story in this game is just as bad as the previous one. The dialog is soooo childish and the voice acting is terrible. would much rather have had it delivered in text boxes like the old school FF's. I am a little disappointed that there are really only 2 true party members, which is made worse by the fact that they are the 2 most unlikable and generic characters. I also preferred the leveling system in the previous game. All other aspects of this game were definitely an improvement.
The paradimgn shift BS, the lack of open world....its like the lazy RPG that doesn't care....Skyrim shatters this game in every way. I used to love Final Fantasy, thanks for ruining it square
This reviewer can't do shit and should quit doing reviews. This game has alot more varieted graphics and envoirments than the prequel plus the game overall is alot more rewarding with less travel time (which is what got kind of boring in 13-1)
Noel has a fairly interesting backstory, being born at the end of time, and his connections with Caius and Yeul are telling to his character. Caius's motives are, despite being twisted by evil, not selfish at all, like some previous villains like Sephiroth, Kuja, or Kefka. In the end, you may even fell for Caius's quest. I did, at least.
In all, I give the game an 8.3. There are some hiccups, but the game is good enough as far as the main story goes.
Also, the story has a few minor quirks, such as everything being explainable by the effect of paradoxes. It makes for fairly repeated sequences, but the underlying story is interesting enough to keep one interested.
For those wanting previous characters to return, I'm going to tell you now: You will be let down. Other than Hope, who does actually drive the story onwards at points, there are few sections with the former cast. Lightning has a few cameos, and Snow is a guest, but thats about it.
The combat is mostly the same as XIII, save for a few differences (the limit of characters being the most prominent). However, they are major changes, mostly for the better, such as being able to switch leaders in combat and a much more simplified manor of upgrading roles.
The story, though, is, in my opinion, too short (main story, no side quests or paradox endings). 30 hours? No way. I did this game, without a guide, in 17 hours, total.

IMO, this series killed it for me. got boring way too fast, slow story, a 20 hour tutorial with more tutorials? mashing autobattle every fight (lmao yea it worked for 80% of my playthrough). i mean yea it's a beautiful game to look at but pretty graphics don't make a game good we all know that. IMO this FF13 trilogy is made for the noob players as an intro to FF which sucks cuz i expected more, but if that's the case, then FFversus13 should satisfy the fanboys, can't wait!

LOL I pre-ordered this game right when it was announced and I'm still up to episode 2, I haven't played it much since I'm SUPER confused. can some one tell me if there are alternative endings which are due to your actions in the game or if its just like 13 when there's only one ending??

@NUKAxXxCOLA After and only after you finish the game, you will obtain an item (Fragment Skill) to view Alternative Endings (Paradox Scope), not only the ending of the game itself, but also in some specific choices you make along the way. There's nothing to be missed, since you can replay all levels anytime you want. Hell, you will have to do watch the paradoxes endings anyway.

oh man i almost forgot. now, i don't want to compare Final Fantasys as if they are suposed to be alike or ones supposed to be better than the other as that is not the case i think. i think each is supposed to be its own game as each time there is an entirely different world, entity, diety, or whatever. but one trait all final fantasys have shared i think (aside from chocobo, crystals, summons, etc.) is an awsome soundtrack. that marvelous trend ended with Final Fantasy XIII-2! you can't ask the question "is it better than the original" cause its not a remake its its own game. bad choice of words in my opinion. anyway, i'm on episode 4 right now and so far i feel like they tried to remedy ff13's excesive linearness(what?) by cutting up ff13-2's story in to pieces, balled it up then and threw it on a disc so it just randomly lay where it fell. then they sealed the story by shooving random stuff in the cracks. still it isn't all that bad really.

I just wish the 13 series really allowed you to choose between the auto-like battle system and a more complex one. It's too easy for me to just switch paradigms all the time. I don't even have to figure out their weaknesses, because Libra is nearly automatic too. Other than that if you can get used to the music, it's still a pretty fun game.

Final Fantasy 13-2 is one of the better Final Fantasy's I have played, I thought the story was actually pretty. The only downfalls I found was that there are only two playable characters. The monster party system isn't bad I just prefer having all playable characters. The second problem I had was that Lightning isn't as playable as I would like but I am sure Square Enix is working on something with that part of the story.

I just wish FF XV returns the series to its best. To me all that is needed is an epic soundtrack, a villain that through his own means and story is as iconic as Sephiroth in power, personality and wickedness. A relatable hero with strong motivations. Characters like Balthier and Ashe from XII, Vincent from VII and Oerba Yun Fang from XIII. A love interest like Tifa or Yuna. A huge open world like Ivalice from XII with awesome cities and different settings to explore... And a cool battle system!

@rickspizzas Not IMHO. Caius was a great villain indeed, and he was portrayed as immensely powerful but to me his story as a villain was not as compelling as Sephiroth's. Not to mention overall, Sephiroth's wickedness and psychotic personality were imo better portrayed and more fitting for a main antagonist. I'd like to know what you mean by Caius' depth... IMO Sephiroth had more depth if you take into account Crisis Core, FF VII and Advent Children. He became an iconic villain at least for me.

@Eternalsummersong Yes, Caius got what he wanted so far (To be Continued...) I'm not denying that, he's a great villain and his voice actor has an awesomely evil voice. However I find Sephiroth's whole story of being a superhero among SOLDIER, his descent into madness, Nibelheim in flames, Aerith's murder and his rise to ultimate power and then his rebirth in Advent Children far more striking and compelling. It's just what I feel. Somehow Sephiroth is still my favorite villain ever.

Don't get me wrong Sephiroth is a freaking awesome villain but the way Caius used everyone played them like puppets and end the end he tricked them into thinking he was dead when he actually made Noel kill the goddess. He didn't burn down buildings but he killed a Goddess and ended the world (as far as we know) killing billions of people.

Watching the whole story from Before Crisis, Crisis Core, VII, and Advent Children is what made Sephiroth such a great character in my eyes. Not to mention Sephiroth's grand scheme seemed more evil to me than Caius'. We may never agree on which one is better, but we can agree both are very different and awesome :P

@Aatjuuh I think XII had it right with the hunting for marks. There were so many, and when you take into account one of those marks was Yiazmat... I just found that amazing. I think VII if you take into account Before Crisis, Crisis Core, VII, Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus had the best storyline, soundtrack and most iconic characters. Seriously, I can't think of better heroes than Zack and Cloud and better villains than Sephiroth and Genesis.

@Aatjuuh However the one I had most fun with in terms of gameplay and time consumption was definetly XII. Over 400 hours in 2 playthroughs. It was an unbelievably good game for me, one of the best I've ever played. And Balthier was one of the best party members in any FF IMHO.

Did I manage to become this good at the age of 7!? Without understanding the english language?! Hahaha when I think of FFVII it's a lot of nostalgic thoughts :p And I still think Cloud is the best hero, Sephiroth the best villian and a good "love" story in it.. And yeah, the gameplay looks awesome so far but you can't be sure if Noctis will turn out to be an awesome hero and you can't tell if the story will be good and there are many things we don't know yet about it. So it's too early to say Versus will be the game that will return glory to Final Fantasy.

If you go on the FF wiki and look at the VS page you see everything for VS. based on that info, i'm saying VS is the real deal. plus the cutscenes which have been shown. They already said the story is nothing like 13/13-2. its more grown up, darker, and based more on reality than some carttonish weird stuff that belongs in shows like Ben 10.

XIII's story is not bad at all. The characters are amazing. They have actualy human qualities. You get an attachment to them. The story makes you consider your actions, and remember each good quality of each human being, even though they not be the most normal person in the world.

Checked this out to see if it improved at all, since i played FF13 for a few hours and thought it was the biggest piece of shit ever. Obviously it hasn't changed. Run 3 ft, battle, tap x a few times, win, run 2 ft, 10 minute cutscene, run 4 ft, battle, tap x, etc. Square needs to realize we want to PLAY the game, not have everything automated. Give us another FF7 or X, where we actually were DOING something. square were losing it around ff12, now they've fucked the series up.

in all honesty...i bought this game cause hope grew up...but it really isn't all that bad. sure, the story sucked a bit and doesn't seem to have anything to do with it's prequel but hey, give it a chance. the gameplay is great, and the exploration is amazing. this game was made to further explore lightning's character, but to me, it seemed as though serah's character was further developed instead. that aside, this game is very good. in my opinion of course.

Wish the story did more? What more did you expect, guys? Something tells me XIII had a sense of linearity to it for a reason. The damn story was a focal point without so many things to have you stray off the path. I love sidequests and open-ended stuff as much as anyone. But with things to do with different timelines, one has to expect that you're not gonna get something entirely concrete.

Thank God they still make Final Fantasy games. All other RPG's fail in comparison when it comes to story. I'm not thrilled about only having two characters but 13-2 looks interesting. The dialog is soooo childish and the voice acting is terrible. would much rather have had it delivered in text boxes like the old school FF's. I am a little disappointed that there are really only 2 true party members, which is made worse by the fact that they are the 2 most unlikable and generic characters. I also preferred the leveling system in the previous game. All other aspects of this game were definitely an improvement.

This reviewer can't do shit and should quit doing reviews. This game has alot more varieted graphics and envoirments than the prequel plus the game overall is alot more rewarding with less travel time (which is what got kind of boring in 13-1)

Noel has a fairly interesting backstory, being born at the end of time, and his connections with Caius and Yeul are telling to his character. Caius's motives are, despite being twisted by evil, not selfish at all, like some previous villains like Sephiroth, Kuja, or Kefka. In the end, you may even fell for Caius's quest. I did, at least.
In all, I give the game an 8.3. There are some hiccups, but the game is good enough as far as the main story goes.

Also, the story has a few minor quirks, such as everything being explainable by the effect of paradoxes. It makes for fairly repeated sequences, but the underlying story is interesting enough to keep one interested.
For those wanting previous characters to return, I'm going to tell you now: You will be let down. Other than Hope, who does actually drive the story onwards at points, there are few sections with the former cast. Lightning has a few cameos, and Snow is a guest, but thats about it.

A short, player-made review.
The combat is mostly the same as XIII, save for a few differences (the limit of characters being the most prominent). However, they are major changes, mostly for the better, such as being able to switch leaders in combat and a much more simplified manor of upgrading roles.
The story, though, is, in my opinion, too short (main story, no side quests or paradox endings). 30 hours? No way. I did this game, without a guide, in 17 hours, total.

IMO, this series killed it for me. got boring way too fast, slow story, a 20 hour tutorial with more tutorials? mashing autobattle every fight (lmao yea it worked for 80% of my playthrough). i mean yea it's a beautiful game to look at but pretty graphics don't make a game good we all know that. IMO this FF13 trilogy is made for the noob players as an intro to FF which sucks cuz i expected more, but if that's the case, then FFversus13 should satisfy the fanboys, can't wait!
