I am surprised that no-one has mentioned that CBS Sports (and most of the author's comments below) have got the applicable Rule wrong. The available relief was not under Rule 25-1, Abnormal Ground Condition, but Rule 24-2, Immovable Obstruction. If the player states that he could hit the sprinkler head on his stroke then it is very difficult for the Rules official not to permit the relief afforded by the Rule. Only the player knows whether he is unfairly taking advantage, or not.
He might have followed 25-1 to the book, but he knew he wouldn't take a divot anywhere near as big so that it would interfer with the sprinkler head. What he did wasn't cheating but there's this thing called integrity...
Ok there is the rule as written. Brendle the rules guy absolutely knows he is cheating and almost begs him to look at it differently. He knows like I said in his original post that he will be faced with funny looks and cold shoulders from his peers. The sprinklers were interfering with his line of play and as the rule states below...is not interference in under the rule. He is so guilty that he steps on his divot after hitting the dropped shot.
@leftofleft11 Line of play has nothing to do with things under the surface of the ground, line of play has everything to do with the flight of the ball in the air on its way to the hole (with some error either side). The area of the swing does include things below the surface, and that is covered by this rule.
@RyanADillon Line of play is anything that is on the line of play. During a putt the line of play can have a spike mark on it....what you are telling me is that its in the air? Like I said before, the sprinklers were never going to be hit with a 3, 4, or 5 iron. Like the guy is going to did in 4 inches in the ground a foot in front of the ball.
Listen to him closely as Brendle begs him to do the right thing (hit it) he can barely speak or make any sense. Because he knows hes cheating.
@leftofleft11 Why do you think it is referred to as LINE OF PUTT when on a green? It is because its definition is totally different from LINE OF PLAY. The line of play is what is important in this video. Your opinion of whether or not he would hit the sprinkler head, or that of the rules official, is irrelevant in the discussion. If the player feels he could potentially hit it then he has every right to drop it without anyone questioning him/her.
Interference by an abnormal ground condition occurs when a ball lies in or touches the condition or when the condition interferes with the player's stance or the area of his intended swing. If the player's ball lies on the putting green, interference also occurs if an abnormal ground condition on the putting green intervenes on his line of putt. Otherwise, intervention on the line of play is not, of itself, interference under this Rule.
i will give him a bucket of balls to hit that shot properly and taking enough divot that he would make contact with the actual sprinkler. It would be quiet a divot.
KKhhhhhharl or what ever his name is cheated on national TV and will from this day forward be looked upon by his peers on the driving range differently.
@leftofleft11 How did he cheat? He followed 25-1 exactly as its written...now if he just up and dropped the ball in the middle of the fairway yes thats cheating..all he did was follow 25-1
