@mohammeddavis There supplementary air inlets that increase airflow to the engine, and thereby increase maximum thrust. Things of beauty those old JT3-D engines ! I could listen to them all day !
@mohammeddavis Those are spring loaded "blocker doors" that open automatically when the pressure inside the intake gets to a predetermined setting. It allows for greater air flow into the inlet at high thrust demands.
Waffles and sausages.... How's that for a lead in? This video takes me right back to being an 11 year old boy. My dad was in the military. It was 1966 and we flew from Frankfurt to Dover AFB.
I was so excited the night before that I couldn't even sleep. And somewhere over the Atlantic, the stewardess served us waffles and sausages. I'll never forget looking out as wing and engines bounced in the mild turbulence while eating. To me it was an impossibility; it was God patting me on the head.
a true and powerful aircraft ever built. you know what would be a great idea, is that if Boeing would bring back those 707's and refit them with newer cockpits and a good FMC and there you go. a flyable plane.
Those are inlet vanes that increase the airflow and prevent stalling of the fan blades. the vanes are springloaded in close position and open because of the low pressure created by the fanblades.
I was curious if the 727 had these engines? I always thought the 727's had the Pratt & Whitney JT3"s. They sound very similar to me. I love the 72's and miss them as well as the 707's and 720's.
The engines are the same on both models, take a look at the #1 engine pod, it has a bulge on in,the engines cudnt run an EBU system without a huge loss of thrust, instead boeing used turbocompressors in the engines, except the #1 engine, thts y its different. Your prob confusin it with the 720B, which used turbofan engines. And that old fashion sound is low bypass jet engine noise.
There's a video of crash test with a 720b. I went on one of these with Air Malta in 1987...my 1st ever flight. Awesome plane. Shame there arem't any kept in museums for people to see.
There Is two 707's on display for the public to see, One is in the Ronald Ragan Museum in Ca. Its AF-1 that was used up to the 1st Pres Bush, and the other is at Wright Patterson AFB , Ohio, Its the back up AF-1 that was used to carry JFK's body out of Dallas.
You are correct. Sad but true, this Boeing 720b was unceromoniously sliced and diced by heavy machines until it was nothing but a couple piles of aluminum and other components. I had hoped that it would have been saved as a part of history, but nope, time marches on and forgets the past. RIP 720b.
@enigma800 Problem is, that despite America's penchant for innovation, America doesn't respect its own history as much as it should: everything is always made to boil down to cost. There should be a handful of passenger-configured DC-8s, 707s, 720s and even Convair jets not only preserved, but flying at major airshows!! They should be taking passengers of today's generation and future generations for flights to see what it was like. There are lots of old propliners, but no preserved flying jets.
The Pilot was possibly doing the Touch,to display the aircraft before it was scrapped, or during testing as this 720 was used as a testbed for Honeywell for turbine research.
The other reason was maybe for crew training.
Apologies for my last post which was sent before checking the spelling!
The last time I heard the sound of JT3's was when I was on a 720 was on the 4th of January 1980! operated by Monarch Airlines here in the UK.
Great memories. This plane in the video, was featured in Airways Magazine Oct 08 issue, being scrapped in Phoenix Harbor June 21s a sad end bu a good run.
What an awesome sound, love that slight buzz sound mixed with the turbine sound such engines give at full power. I hope she's kept for preservation, pity some large combined syndicate couldn't keep for flying, so many people would pay to fly on her now, be enough to fill her each flight incl coporate charters! A shame the Pratt & Whitney one is incredibly being scrapped in this day and age, when such a big firm could at least have her restored as an eyecatching 'gate guardion' at their plant.
It is done primarily to save time. It allows you to practice landing without having to stop, taxi back, and then take off again. In a plane such as this where it costs thousands of dollars to fly per hour, that can be a big savings.
By the way, I recently read that this plane is for sale. Its time as an engine testbed is growing to a close and this famous 720 will be replaced by a 757. What a great airplane to own!
The rings of small inlets were to aid the air flow on many early turbofan engines. They were spring loaded, and improved the efficiency by opening automatically at higher power settings. They also helped prevent turbine stalls, common in early TF engines. They featured on 707/720/737/747s, although as engines were changed to more efficient models, most aircraft were upgraded, and except for the 707s, they had all but disappeared by the 1980s
This plane was retired recently, after 47 years in service (20 years with Honeywell). It's being replaced by a Boeing 757. Fortunately, they plan to put it on display in a museum!
wow! at 00:51 the turbines are virtally at idle.. the aircraft is on the ground... by 00:59, just 8 seconds later, this beast tears off the runway back in to the sky. Gas turbine power at its best!
I did my primary flight training out at IWA... recognized that landscape as soon as the video started. You really get to see a lot of cool planes flying out there at Willie.
The pilot decided to go around because the sound it too awesome! Again, Again!

What do those flaps on the engine do at full power? Are they for bypass thrust?

Those flaps are called auxiliary intake doors. They allow the engine to suck in more air at high power settings.
