this is one of my fav shows. i always wondered what it would be like if they would ever put this to a movie. like they do almost everything else. i wonder if Rob Reiner would direct. Unfortunatly the only actor i i believe that should ever fill Carroll O Conners's shoes as Archie is in his 70s now (Nicholson) so with that they may just have pass this by. i had this idea for 10 years but now it's too late.
@fatbowe to use archie bunkers words: "haaaaaaaaahhh" that don't make no sense meathead, so just shuts up and do that for the rest of your life! lol (no offense intended this just came to mind cause i don't understand where you were going with the meatball thing)
its interesting to see early episodes of any tv show, it always seems like it takes a while for the writers to work out all the elements of the show before they get it to a place where they are comfortable with it. For example, here Edith seems a little more sharp, slightly less submissive and also much less high-pitched screechy voice.
There is another episode where edith explains how much his VA visit made her think of when he left to fight the nazi's, so if they were married 22 years, they had to get married in 49! People didn't live together back then.
I've seen the two previous unaired pilots and the casting is so much better (obviously), and even the pacing and blocking are much better. It went from an okay show and idea to a classic.
This is more like it. All the characters were in the right place. The set was big enough so they could emote themselves. Rob Reiner totally made the role of Mike, he met Archie on level. They owned the roles. Edith she was a lot better in this one because she played it with more energy. Gloria was like she should of been in the last two plots. They were a lot more believable and you can see why they lasted so long. Outstanding.
wow!!!!! That was a TRIP seeing this same episode being performed three different times by 3 different sets of glorias/boneheads. wow the same lines the 68, 69, and 70...just neat....i wonder how many more are like this? just so cool
@analyzingfunny I just now finished watching all 3 myself. It was very cool to see since I had never seen the other 2 pilots. The 1st pilot Mike (Richard) & Gloria were the closest though to this one than the 2nd couple was. I also heard Jean say in an interview that the first pilot she didnt have the nasally voice and was similar to the british version so I too wonder about what others they did before 1968.
I saw the first two pilots. It had the same story and two leads but different supporters. It's interesting to see the changes that was made before the series aired.
Arch is the greatest........I've known many, including myself, who sound just like him as far as being annoyed with so many things. Classic funny stuff.
Ineresting how much Archie plays to the audience in this very first episode. He does not do that as much in later episodes. I mean how he faces the audience, as if he is talking directly to them.
I didn't like how the show was so pro-Michael on everything. I think Archie had a lot of good qualities in spite of his bigotry. Just because his racism was bad, his concern for his family and his work ethic was good.
@shoofirbin The character "Edith" evolved somewhat, at least to me. Edith became more of her own person, rather than just Archie's wife. And yes, there was much more sarcasm from her in the earlier episodes, for sure.
Archie may have been a bight but he was right about everything that goes on in this world we live in today. If he saw what goes on in this world he would roll in his grave. God bless america and god bless Archie Bunker.
If Archei saw the stuff thgat goes on today he would roll in his grave. Archie may have been a bigot but he was right about everything he said about the world we live in. god bless america and god bless archie bunker.
I just saw the "original" pilot...where the charactors of Gloria & Mike were played by different actors. I can HONESTLY say that re-casting the other 2 was THE BEST CHOICE they ever made! I dont think the show would of been as populare had they not changed them.
I watched that pilot episode too. Looked to me like it was a poor audition of two other people instead of a pilot episode but who knows. Whatever it was, it was terrible!!!!!!!
I really hope that people dont think black people are handicapped... that is a load of BS if I ever heard one.. I could easily say I am handicapped because I am gay.. but it doesn't work that way...
@thomalero u noticed then that george is archie in black. " i aint never set foot in no honkey house and like hell im gona start at the bottom of the heap"
The real quirk about this episode, or maybe even a blooper, was that Archie correctly pronounced the preacher's last name as Felcher. In virtually every other episode the name came up, he called him Rev. Fletcher, and when corrected, Archie would simply say 'whatever'.
That "Mr. Religious" line of sarcasm from Edith was very uncharacteristic. I know this is the first episode and the characters were forming. Just an observation.
...To think that Mickey Rooney was the first choice for Archie Bunker, but no one could play the part of Archie Bunker better than the wonderful John Carroll O'Connor.
R.I.P., Mr. O'Connor.
Pop quiz time--What actor played Michael Stivic's uncle Casimir? Be careful out there with the answer, and Happy New Year.
In the Italian version "meathead" was dubbed with "testone", literally "big head" but in a denigratory tone. But it's surely a bad translation.
