It depends on what kind of converter your have, single direction or bi-directional. The video show here show the connection of SATA device to PATA (IDE) motherboard. You will need either an bi-directional SATA bridge or a converter conver IDE device to SATA interface to connecto SATA only motherboard.

This works the same with SATA hard drives, too right? My computer's pretty old (P4 MSI MS-6719) and only supports IDE drives. I'm getting a SATA HDD and this, I hope will be my solution to the problem of incompatibility.
I have bought a new motherboard couple of days ago an it does not have an IDE slot. Must I have this adapter to install my DVD or what ?

@TheDoctorParker I actually ended up with a brand new computer a couple months after I wrote that. I'm all SATA now. :) I never did get a converter.
