  • @elementos94 i recommend rustoleum lacquer paints. you can get them at Home Depot or even wal mart. check my other 5150 videos, i think they came out better than this one did.

  • Sweet!!!!!!

  • how long do you leave each coat of paint to dry?

  • @nosmoking099 applay a coat about every 20 minutes. 24 hours between color coats.

  • Comment removed

  • im sorry, but does that say dont use acrylics, or dont use enamels?

  • @medude6652 it will work it lacquers and enamels, but i do recommend using a urethane.

  • good job dude! i wish i could do this but ive never made a guitar b4.. and this is not like the kind of project that a noob like me should start with. :( but great job still thanks for posting! :D

  • how did u do the black?

  • @rummy987 i made a video covering that, look in my videos and check it out.

  • @ WIKIPEDIA Eddie painted the guitar black. After it was dry he put strips of masking tape on the body and painted it white. Due to companies selling guitars with similar finishes he stopped using it. He then started using the famous yellow and black "bumble bee" (pictured on Van Halen II). In 1979, after much disappointment with the performance of yellow and black, Eddie put more tape on the body (original black and white frankenstrat) and painted over that with Red Schwinn Bicycle paint WIKI

  • @rummy987 that was for the Frankenstrat not the 5150. the 5150 is white, red and black. the Frankenstrat is black, white, and red.

  • Nice, What Kinda Krammer should i get for painting that or Anykind guitar you would recomend for a cheap and good price.

    Thanks.

  • woulda used a darker red, and bought a squier strat. atleast then the headstock would be right

  • @thenin10dowiiaccount Learn what guitar uses what headstock. The 5150 had the Kramer Banana head, not a Fender head.

  • You were supposed to do black, then white, then red.

  • @MrZakkD sorry but the black is the 3rd color, atlest thats the way all the highend replicas that i have seen are done.

  • @vanhalen5150jhs i thought it was white, black, then red?

  • @vanhalen5150jhs Agreed, black is defiantly the last color.

  • @vanhalen5150jhs nah eddie made the white black guitar first than put the red over it later :)

  • @vanhalen5150jhs lol it looks like you put electrical tape on there haha

  • @JgHaverty sorry but no it's not tape. check my other project videos, they show the process of how i put the black stripes on the guitars.

  • @vanhalen5150jhs Oh I know its not tape lol. just looks like it because so in your face :D

  • @vanhalen5150jhs shoulda said, looks good as hell dude.

  • @JgHaverty the guitar body used in this video was just a junk 2nds body that i had. so i used it just to try this painting process out.

  • @vanhalen5150jhs Ed didnt use paint he used black tape

  • @MrZakkD nothing fails more than failing at telling someone else they fail... fail -.-

  • @MrZakkD its red , white then black ...

  • @MrZakkD it was DEFINITELY done the way this guy did it . . . you can see on eddies that there is overspray from the black, indicating that he didn't do the reverse mask right . . . just look at eddies . . . the black is coming off ON TOP OF the red

  • @MrZakkD tell you what man, upload your video how to, and then comment. His looks legit as fuck.

  • @MrZakkD He's right. Black is the third color. If you look at the poster of Eddie holding his 5150 in this video you can see where the black is coming off and the red paint is showing. BTW i have two copies of that poster. It's my favorite pic of him with his guirtar.

  • @MrZakkD The Original Frankenstrat is Black to White to Red...but the 5150 is White to Red to Black for the final stripes...

  • @MrZakkD sure its white then black then red

  • @MrZakkD Ed didnt use black paint he used black tape

  • @ghero1123 he did use black paint. look at the original 5150. the black is faded.tape does not fade.

  • @vanhalen5150jhs wait then maybe it was the franken strat...ik he used black tape for the stripes on one guitar...maybe it was the smaller stripes....idr

  • @MrZakkD you're joking right?

  • headstock looks really weird. Is that u playing in background? Good work if it is!

  • @paulscape72 sorry not me. it's a VH jam track that i used. still working on the playing.

  • 2:43 fuck yeah ernie ball

  • ok i need a little help, i have a real basic setup, one humbucker 1 vol, but the jack doesnt werk, with certain positions of the cable i lose my signal completly...any ideas?thax

  • @guitargod1598 ok. the input jack is loosing contact in the jack. remove the jack in the guitar and bend the connectorin a little so it will have a tighter fit againt the male input jack. that should give you a soid connection.

  • @vanhalen5150jhs sry,im a rookie, but i dont quite understand. are talking about moving the spots that i solder to closer 2 the cable end?

  • @guitargod1598 the the input jack out of the guitar and then place the guitar input cord into it. you will see a side of the female guitar jack contact the shaft of the male end input. bend it more in, so it creates more pressure aginst the male input shaft. this will create a better electrical connection.

  • @vanhalen5150jhs if that doesnt werk what should i do?

  • @guitargod1598 if you still have problems, replace the jack on the guitar.

  • Great playing-- even in standard tuning!!! You are inspiring too!!!

  • Loving the background music - is this you playing or VH playing minus the lyrics??

  • @anthonym612 it's a VH jam track

  • Hi I got everything ready to paint a frankie, and i wondered if you know where i can the best pictures of foranexample eddie maskin his frankenstrat? so i can get the exact same look. Ps. awesome job on the meanstreet.

  • @eddiehalenvan try meanstreetguitarsdotcom, evhgeardotcom. i have also found pics of the replicas on ebay that i have used to reference material. right click on the pic with the mouse and save to file.

    james

  • @vanhalen5150jhs thank you james.

     keep on paintin :P

  • i hate when panama is tuned standard...idk it sounds too much like a biker harley davidson commercial song...

  • Nice job! I just started my Frankenstrat build!

  • do you put the kramer logo on THEN put the clear coat of paint on the headstock, or do you put the kramer logo after the paints all done??

  • @trunk102 the logo goes on before the clear coat. then spray enough coat of clear to build it up so when you sand it smooth you cant feel the decal under the clear. then buff with rubbing compound.

  • Hey dude what kind of pick up did you buy ??

  • @LeadGuitar33 duncan custom custom

  • seymour duncan 59 right?

  • @guitarhero31333 duncan custom custom

  • dude another comment u are so fucking good dude u make me wanna do this im gonna dude

  • kind of looks like a gutair from rock band

  • i want my dean razorback to have van halen strips, but its just i dont want to ruin my 1000 euro guitar if i mess up

  • what version of dance the night away is this and where did you get it

  • @fenderstrat71 i mean panama

  • what are the exact color names to use of rustoleum specifically the white and red? thanks

  • Nice job, I painted the original EVH 5150 guitar among many others for Eddie being the painter for Kramer guitar company from 1982-90

  • how did u do the black strips

  • ur floyd rose can go back his cant

  • dude what kind of guitar is this? i need to get his so i can start my EVH project

  • @guitarhero31333 ebay seller kissmyaxeguitars or kissmyaxeguitarsdotcom

  • @vanhalen5150jhs thanks

  • @guitarhero31333 I can answer this! its a kramer 5150 search it on google you can find it

  • hey man im gona make the evh frankenstien guitar and i have a fender strat body that i bought but i want to add a trem lock nut so it doesnt go out of tune how would you install that?

  • i should let ever coat of paint dry before tapping and putting on the new coat?

  • @angusyoungdude2 let dry 24 hours between diffrent colors.

  • hey! quick question! where did you get the kramer decal for the headstock??

  • do you use spray paint or canned brush paint?

  • @relientkrules18 on this project i use dupli color brand spray paint from shucks auto supply store. but i do recommend you use rustoleum lacquer spray paint from home depot.

  • Where did you get the 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 inch tapes? I've looked everywhere!! If you cut it what is your method?

  • @TheGhoulian i got on ebay

  • @TheGhoulian i got it on ebay, but on the other projects i cut my own using a hobby knife, a metal straight edge and cutting matt. i have a video where this is demonstrated if you want to take a look.

  • nice...an old string pack on the neck for overspray @ 2:40 XD

  • My friend just asked me to paint his guitar for £30, now since I have no frickin clue about this because I'm a pencil, paper and graphic artist he thought I might be able to. So my question is will any paint stuff do?

  • @punkrockbfs use rustoleum lacdquer paint from Home Depot. follow all the steps and it will look great. any questions message me.

  • i have a question...afeter repainting a guitar (my guitar is acoustic and from 1985) is there the risk to sound worse? Does the paint affect the way is sounds? And also, does it matter the paint you use, (i was thinking to try a paint used for cars)...thank you

  • @KatonMegami it should not affect the sound. dont mix types of paint or brands. use only one brand and make sure it is all the same type of paint. if its not it may cause a chemical reaction and it will not look good.

  • Doesn't it matter if i make the hole where the pickup are placed bigger?

Or else i cant get the little electronic thing out.

5:28 Did you make the hole bigger?

    Please Answer ! (-:

    Regards from Denmark

  • @DanskeSange the real 5150 does have a enlarged pickup route. i did not enlarge the pickup route on this guitar. the hole you see in the pickup route is because who ever made the body messed it up and routed through it. i only used this body as a test project to try out the painting process. the hole going through the pickup route should not be there if you are trying to do a accurate replica for yourself.

  • where'd you get it

  • amazing but i think i would like it more if it had a darker neck

  • whatäs the next song?

  • good job man it looks great

  • whats the first song in the video?

  • @fretdeliciousTV

it is panama from a jam track

  • @fretdeliciousTV panama

  • @fretdeliciousTV It's called Panama its a van halen classic.

  • Will masking the pickups etc work for respraying? I normally take them out but I'm kinda feeling lazy and just want a project done

  • @hundanth

it's only going to look as good as the work you put into it.

  • is this a guitar from kissmyaxe guitars??

  • I am actually making a whole guitar from scratch (blocks of wood no pre-made parts even neck) and attempting to do the same paint job. total cost of project this far was $150 dollars at my schools woodshop class. i will try to make a video reply when im done and how it ended up. i would appreciate x-tra tips.

  • hey, im looking to paint my old cheap ass guitar, what kind of paint should i use? Nitrocellulose, or car paint?

  • @deathblade7

    automotive would work well

  • how did you tape the stripes so good around the horns? i'm tring to put a couple of stripes on my SG and i'm having trouble there. any tips???

  • @VALKRYE2009 i just rubb it to keep out any creases

  • @vanhalen5150jhs mine always "bubble out" ounce i bend it i don't seem to have any problem with over spray

  • pls indicate the step by step procedure.

  • one question, are you using spray paint or a special custom paint, cause iam am thinking of buying a squier strat and paint it like van halen's frankenstrat

  • @skylineXpert

rustoleum lacquer spray paint. get it at home depot.

  • Thinking about making the 5150 or the frankenstrat...How did you make the kramer logo?

  • @edhead5150 got it from a guy on ebay. he sells the 5150 stickers and includes the kramer logo with it. $12.00 for both

  • A few questions

when did you wet sand inbetween coats or after spraying the clear coat

and what sort of clear coat shall i use NITROCELLULOSE? or some other one?

    thnaks.

  • @blackstars26 only wetsand after the clear coat has fully dried. rustoleum lacquer clear.

  • beautiful man! Thanks for the awesome post!

  • does it matter what make of spray paint you use besides it not being and did you use gloss paint for all of the coats?

  • @blackstars26

i have tried krylon, ace hardware brand and a cheaper brand of rustoleum. they did not work for me. the only ones that i had really good results with was rustoleum enamels and lacquers that i got from home depote. do not mix enamels with lacquers or vise versa.

  • @vanhalen5150jhs do you know of any other decent spay paints i could use that i can of ebay for my next steve vai jem guitar project

  • I liked this guitar better black and white.

  • awesome but, you do know he didnt paint his stripes on or use any finish

  • @therudster1 yes he did

  • @therudster1

Yeah he used voodoo and the guitar magically got stripes.

  • Very nice pal! Can I do something similar for my electric bass? Also, the music is insrumental Panama, right? Did you make it? Awesome!

  • @CubeableGame

you can do it to any guitar you want. yes it is panama. a backing track.

  • Thanks dude!

  • So to get the black stripes, did you put tape on before the white coat?

  • black stripes go on last. please check out one my other videos on the 5150. they show how to do it in better detail.

    thanks

  • hi, how do i take all mi pikups and volume stiks off? because mi pikups are connected to wires?

  • use a solidering iron to melt the solider and then disconnect the wires. make a diagram where the wires connect to so you have a reference point when you reassemble the guitar.

  • vanhalen5150jhs...

Nice work...What brand tape are you using for the stripes and where did you purchase them? I see Scotch and 3M have a couple brands...What about those blue plastic like ones you can buy from the auto store?

  • i got the 1/2 from ace hardware and the 3/4 from wall mart. 1/4 i cut to size using a stright edge and hobby knife and a cutting matt. the blue painters tape does not work very well for these kinds of projects. for some reason the paint reacts with it.

  • Thanks gor answeing my question...I was wondering what kind of tape is it? Is it like basic masking tape, plastic tape? I think electric tape would leave to much glue residue..

  • i use regular masking tape that i get from ace hardware for the 1/2 inch and the 3/4 i got from wall mart and the 1/4 i cut to size with a straight edge a hobby knife and a cutting matt. you can buy the 1/4 inch but i have'nt found any place that sells it around here.

  • Autoparts store or Autobody supply.

  • use the kramer 100st it works good plus its a kramer

  • its cheaper than the one he uses and its a kramer neck

  • what would u search on ebay to find this "project guitar" because i cannot find it

  • search under unfinished guitars or do and advanced search for sellers and search for seller ddks2273. if he does not have any listed right now you can message him and find out when he will have a new shppment in. these guitars are not listed under evh 5150 do to copyrights

  • Kramer 5150

  • where do you guys get the guitar necks i want to start a project like this and the neck you guys use is perfect for what i want
