I live on an alpaca farm and I've never found it necessary to separate the mom and the baby, to check the baby. The mom will let you, as long as your calm about it.
@EvilParsnip247 Every other mom in the group will typically allow a trusted person to handle their baby even at birth and we don't need to separate them. This alpaca was born in South America so we figure she was not taken care of in the transport to the US. We've had a few stubborn alapcas but this alpaca is the only one where it becomes dangerous to handle her baby even for brief times.
Women.. Shut up about the "evil people" and "horrible (what-nots)". You sound like that alpaca; a lot of angry noise over a trifling you don't understand. Would you rather see the mother trying to get a sick baby to nurse as it dies because it didn't get medical attention? How heroic of you to suggest they deprive newborns of a routine medical check-up from the vet to insure themselves long and happy lives! Clueless people.. -.-

Wow, such ignorance. When a cria is born, there are a few things that need to be done to make sure it is healthy. Most of the time, we do it quick enough the mom doesn't mind. However, this alpaca is extremely defensive and would have attacked us if we did not separate them briefly.
No need to fear, that is what therapy is for. I am slowly working my way through my problem, and spreading the word. If you have not read my old comment it is posted below. I just want to make sure that no one suffers the way i did. I appreciate animals... but Alpaca's, they're something else.
Yes, you can tell she is very concerned about her baby... I could tell that was what she as looking for before I even read the comments!
We had two females almost trample our new puppy to 'protect' their day-old crias.
Just the other day, I had a dam try to 'protect' her 'cria' (now old enough to have a baby of her own) from me while I tried to remove a strand of barbed wire that had attached itself to her. I hadn't been spit at in months... and then BAM.

one time i had an alpaca scream at me and then I was trampled by it. I was 5 I will never forget it alpacas are vicous and cruel to kindergardeners on feild trips. Hope you stay safe in the feilds dont get hurt they are scary beasts
This alpaca is one of the more ornery of the group. We were just looking at the baby to make sure she was fine after she was born and we couldn't do that if they weren't separated because we'd rather not get attacked by the mother alpaca.
@rockyct thats sounds reasonable. why you off earning views by calling the vid "Killer Alpaca" though? Doesnt sound like that has anything to do with you having to look at the baby
....?

@Cammydgaf Not this time, but I've been gotten good twice. It pretty much ended whatever I was trying to do because it's time for a 30 minute shower.

@rockyct It was a joke about the alpaca. I honestly didn't notice the dog until now. But thanks. :)

@davidls11 lol, I wasn't sure but since there was a dog in the other pen I just took it to be serious.

Aww was she sad about her baby? I know that the little crias need to have a few check ups when they are born. It's for your own babies good mommy:)

It's obvious that her cria is behind that wall...way to go...stress the dam so that she can't feed the cria....dumb.

What would you perfer they did? If you do not seperate a baby from the hembra then the baby may eventually kill her.
