I've never seen how the phalanx would be very formidable. With a long pole being carried by a foot soldier like that you could easily push it out of the way and close the distance where you have a bunch of lightly armored solders holding their, uh. poles.

It's not that simple. If you've ever had a few people pointing giant sticks/spears in your face that they can move around freely you realize there's a big fear factor when you have those tips in your face. Sure you can push a spear to the side, but consider that the man behind the one that was holding that first spear has his own in between the two people in front of him. In actuality there was no way to just push those spears to the side and run in. It was a solid wall.

At that time Greece was not a unified state entity.All regions were carrying the Hellenic Culture,language and religion.Each region was independent (macedonia, sparta, athens etc) but they were all Hellenes. its possible, especially given that during those times, they don't have satellites to monitor enemy troop movements. Though there may have been several scouts out to look for enemy movements, it is also possible that enemy scouts may have killed Alexander's scouts. Or somebody just forgot to report that the enemy is moving.
