@TheHarViC2000 In case you still haven't figured it out, ill explain. First, you can use any alcohol. Isoproply should not be used, except for in emergenies, becuse of the high water content leave's soot, and does not burn all the way off. Then you have Ethanol, what you drink. This is not much better in most cases. The two that you really want to use are Denatured (such as SLX, or often sold as paint stripper), but most of us use HEET (in the yellow bottle) I picked some up yesterday for 1.56.
@TheHarViC2000 I coulden't tell you, but Ive had water boil within 4-5 mins. on average, so id say quite a bit more. If you need anything else, feel free to ask me.
@fadugleman rubbing alcohol is only 70 percent alcohol, the rest is water and other stuff, which make it a poor fuel choice. Go to the hardware store and buy "denatured alcohol" You can get about a quart for 5 dollars.
@MushroomStocker some rubbing alcohol is higher than 70%......but you are right.....denatured is the best. My jet cooker i picked up off ebay says to use only denatured
@martywoodcraft put something taller (like another can) around the outside of the stove with some holes in it and set your pot on that. the heat will go hope and should heat the pot without putting out your stove. Just make sure that it has plenty of holes in it can breathe.
Great vid, some nice stoves. I'd be careful with the later models however. The stove is as high as it is wide which makes is prone to tipping over. The lower soda can ones may be better suited. It would totally suck if the pot tipped over and the burning alcohol got dumped out. Thanks for the tips, I like your seventh stove the best.
Try a 'Penny Stove' they are a treat. I have used one for quite a while now, and its great as one can have a full flame or a simmer. I build mine from the 24oz heini cans, but either size works great. Its the best alcohol stove out there, and easy to make. I have also run my stove using just plain ol' 'Rubbing Alcohol' and it works fine, but not as hot...but at .80$ a quart as opposed to 4.00$ for denatured...I use Denatured, but it's an option if you can't find any in a small town.
how come my stoves always have a yellowish flame, the pots dont get all sooted up but the flame is never perfectly blue. how can i rectify it, could it be the quality of the denatured alcohol?
ever try yo put a couple small rocks on the metal coil for a more even burn? just wondering if it would utilise the heat more. anyway, super cool video. peace.
OMG NEVER EVER use the HEET that comes in the RED bottle!!!! Use the one from the yellow bottle, or else buy denatured alcohol in the big metal cans from the hardware store. Remember: Yellow=Caution; RED=NOOOO!!!
If you don;t believe me you can go ahead and blow up your *own* kitchen and singe your *own* eyebrows. Plus, the red stuff leaves an icky residue, whereas the yellow stuff burns clean.
ok, i make the ones like your 7th one. except instead the wing nut i use a penny... they call them penny stoves... but i was woundering is it possible to over fill... (beside filling so it leaks he holes...) like will it explode?
careful with 6th stove.. the design allows too much pressure. thats why they are commonly called "penny" stoves... a penny will allow excess pressure to escape like a pressure cooker. the bolt does not. the extra fumes i saw had bubbled some of the alcohol out in the daylight portion of the film. if u must have more pressure try a nickel.
these stove work very well...use the 90% or the highest walmarts sells..it cooked a can of spagettio's in 45 seconds..i elk hunt in the back country in wyoming..and i have a stove like this..they are awesome
I love the idea of putting the jets in the middle of the stove so you can use the top to rest your pot on, preventing you from having the hassle of making and carrying around a pot stand. Genius!
Good vid! I had to laugh at the exploding stove that you tacked on at the end of the clip. And that's after 20 years in the London Fire Brigade! Just be careful out there :) Now I'm off to experiment along your lines but not in the house guys! If it can go wrong it will and you don't want to give my colleagues any extra work, do you? I wish I'd accessed Youtube before I went out yesterday and bought a tiny propane burner. These ideas are lighter and cheaper. And more fun! Keep it up.
I tried one today when the power went off, used rubbing alcohol, open chimney type with jets at the top, placed pot directly on stove. Rubbing alcohol (70%) did OK, but not great, was able to heat up a can of beans and pork though. Need bettter fuel and lower design, pot was a little tippy. Even my slapped together one did OK for a first try, now I want to build a better one and get more style points next time.
Why should the can explode if you don't put the screw in? is it a build up of some kind of pressure? I mean if your using alcohol that should not happen, if gasoline the fumes could build up and blow up like that. Just woundering why that happens when you dont put on the screw. My friend and i want to make one, have any suggestions for first timers besides screw in the screw?
The Explode is when the Air and Fuel Vapours are at optimal mix inside the can.
Its like 10% Fuel Vapour 90% Air
It only needs flame to make it inside the can to ignite this rich vapours mix and you get a fireball inside the can that will force its way out. 9:26 is what happens when the gas mix hits perfect inside the can and when a flame makes it inside the can due to incomplete burn on the outside (Ie The flame was sucked into the can via the ignited side of the can)
i dont bother with screw. i make 5 pin holes and fill in middle. then put penny over. it wont explode. i have had one "explode" but all it did was pop off fast! put fiberglass inside the can!
@Yukoner12b From what I read Gas Line Anti-freeze is either Methanol or Isopropyl alcohol. I would use methanol because it's made from corn and burns cleaner.... from what I read.. Anyway, nice video!

A question about 8 and 9. There are holes in the top and bottom, but wouldn't it be more fuel efficient if there were less holes in the bottom than the top? If there's any wind at all, the heat from the bottom holes will be wasted. I'm no expert on this sort of thing, but if the lower set was moved up, and fewer were made, wouldn't it burn longer and more effectively heat the pan? Just a thought.
the lower holes are for air inlet, not for any output, having holes in the bottom and top causes an updraft inside the can as air shoots in the bottom holes, rises, and shoots out the top
the penny covers the fill hole, If the pressure inside the stove gets too high, The penny will lift slightly and let some gas out. If the pressure is correct the oenny wont let it out.
when i use 70% rubbing alcohol, i have to keep the fire on the priming pan for like 30 seconds before the alcohol can keep itself lit or else it would just go out

enticed2zeitgeist 1 month ago
These stoves have "flow" but no pressure. But, that makes them safe to use.
The heat at prime heats the fuel creating vapor flow.
The ignited vapor perpetuates the combustion process, until fuel is consumed, or air is removed.

Just a thought.

the lower holes are for air inlet, not for any output, having holes in the bottom and top causes an updraft inside the can as air shoots in the bottom holes, rises, and shoots out the top

why do peoplecall it a penny can stove,,whats the penny for
obxwavesurfer 2 years ago
the penny covers the fill hole, If the pressure inside the stove gets too high, The penny will lift slightly and let some gas out. If the pressure is correct the oenny wont let it out.

70% rubbing alcohol is good but heat works better
MacsCanfly 2 years ago
when i use 70% rubbing alcohol, i have to keep the fire on the priming pan for like 30 seconds before the alcohol can keep itself lit or else it would just go out
thelaughingcheese 2 years ago
than use denatured alcohol
