run debian with lxde and you'll get a noticeable performance difference, thats what i'm doing. sure it'll take a while to get it set up just right, but in the end, sacrifice some special programs and do some research and your netbook will perform like its been overclocked by 300mhz, and it only uses around 50mb of ram
I had problems downloading Xubuntu so I gave up and never got to try it out. My understanding is that its optimised for the EEE PC and includes camera, wireless & bluetooth drivers. I was successful downloading Ubuntu 9.04 and its very fast. It found the wireless in an instant. I never got around to trying the camera or BT. The 900 series and Atom series cannot be compared. The 900mhz celeron does twice as many operations per clock cycle than the atom and arguably faster in some instances.
Driver support is the most important which is better in the netbook remix edition since they use the same chipset and components. I have it NR and I'll be posting a video on it soon.
I couldnt get the netbook remix edition onto a DVD so I installed the regular version and boy is it faster and slicker than before. Even with all the eye candy turned up it runs smoothly.
I also installed the regular version of ubuntu 9.04 on my eee.
Ya I've found it runs faster than before on everything except the video. Like before i could have video streaming off the internet and totem playing and it ran at a proper speed but now I can only really have one video thing playing at once or there's slowdown.
personally i prefer Linux Mint over Ubuntu. Its basically the same deal, but Mint has a few handy programs pre-installed and the start menu is better (search function similar to vista's)
Both Linux Mint and Ubuntu come on Live cds, so you can play around with them without installing anything to your hard drive (keeps your Windows setup safe). If you like it just hit install and free yourself from m$ :)
Hi, I have a eee pc 1000h and just installed ubuntu on it ( dualboot) now, i tried it yesterday, but the wireless connection doesnt work. Anyone know how it can work (like on xp, that you can choose your wireless internet )?
you have to fiddle round, if your wireless chipset is by broadcom it is a pain so just do a little research and find the driver fixes for it for ubuntu
Wireless in 9.04 worked fine and was already installed and functioning after the first boot up. Are you still having probs? What wireless card do you have?
I only ever used the LAN cable for the EEE PC but on my Aspire One it took less than a minute to set up the wireless the first time. There's a brillian user guide that any novice can follow to set it up. Check out my Aspire One Software review where I guide you through setting up wireless on Linux.
not asking in the way of being a novice, I am writing this on the eee pc 901, with puppy linux installed, other than the small size of the keyboard, and the crap linux distro that came on it, I like it alot. took me a half and hour to get the wi-fi, and the headphone jack working. I think they would sell tons more of these beauties if they put a full distro on the machine to begin with. thanks for the input and the video though.
I found the EEE PC's Xandros is a little too Fisher Price. Acer's Linpus Linux has a smart interface with useful apps and very easy set up.
The full Ubuntu distro struggles on netbooks putting a similar strain as Vista on them. I want to see what Dell's Linux flavor will be like.
Try installing the Acer Aspire One's Linpus Linux (or check out my vid) and see what you think or try installing Xubuntu which is optimised for netbooks and includes all drivers inc webcam and bluetooth outta the box
Xubuntu is designed for netbooks whereas Ubuntu isnt. Hardy Heron is as taxing as Vista on the poor EEE PC. Personally, I like Linpus Linux on the Acer Aspire One for ease of use..
Use WINE if you're into tech demos of old games but honestly, just dual boot. XP runs games like WoW just great. There are freeeware programs that increase the resolution to 768 pixels tall (scaled) and up to 1080 x 1920 (scrolled) needed by some windows games and apps to run (WoW, Google Earth, Video/photo editing etc.)
I read somewhere that the preinstalled system is pretty good, you just have to find Terminal, put in a start menu, fiddle around with apt-get, and then you will have a full KDE desktop.
On some laptops, Ubuntu can be super slow, but if you want a full gnome desktop, consider debian, which is leaner but very very very similar to ubuntu.
How is the performance? I tried the installation thru XP to test Ubuntu Hardy on D: and was not too happy with the performance as compared to XP installation. The XP that comes with EeePC900 is quite good in my opinion. Although I m not using any Virus guard at the moment.
Considering how much longer it takes for it to boot up, and that one would want a small computer like the eee pc to have quick access, I don't know why I would get rid of Xandros. Is there any actual advantage to putting ubuntu on this thing yet? - Speed during actual operation being the main concern.
I miss some of the old graphics. :(

few questions: you stated "Xubuntu is optimized for netbooks" does this inquire that it would work with the 900 series?
other questions, do these work for 9.04:
Ethernet
Wireless: Yes
Camera:
ACPI 1:
ACPI 2:
ACPI 3:
Also did you have any problems during your install? I noticed in the video a clock frequency issue??

Regular release performs better for a bunch of netbook owners.

Looking forward to it.
BTW, is that the fan in the netbook I hear starting every 30-60 sec or so? Sounds very battery-killing, if so :(

I've uploaded a new dual boot installation guide and a demo with a commentary of 9.04. All in all, a very fast a user friendly update to 8.04.

Xandros was fun but its security was atrocious so fuck it, I deleted it.
Then I installed ubuntu eee and it ran hideously, unbearably slow with its netmix user interface.
So I disabled the interface and it ran at a good fast speed.
But it's not open source so fuck it.
Then I installed normal Ubuntu 8.10 (not another ubuntu eee or that easy peasy shit) and I'm happy with it.
For now.

Try Xubuntu 8.10 which is optimised for netbooks and has full driver support.
Jaunty Jackalope (9.04) is out in just over a week!

Sounds intriguing. Do you have a link where they talk about how it's optimized for netbooks?
> Jaunty Jackalope (9.04) is out in just over a week!
Ya I'm looking forward to that. It's supposed to be much faster than 8.10 (which is already fairly fast in my opinion.)

Actually Linux has always had better wifi and bluetooth support than Windows. It actually had bluetooth support before Windows did at all.

So does Xandros, if you just enable the full KDE desktop, you can use virtual screens.

The drive C partition is much faster than the drive D. Try installing it on that if it's your prefered OS. XP runs great with or without AV.
earthling10 3 years ago
Owtch, that was a long 1 minute & 40 seconds of boot up.
I was thinking of Kubuntu 8.04 on the new EEE 901, it should be faster, but I think the customized Xandrous is for a purpose.
Thanks for the video man.
