the unstoppable Romans for me the best civilization of the ancient wars of history and ancient peoples and in Rome the capital of this empire was destroyed by the barbarians of the cowards who only attack in groups were about 12 civilizations together and managed to stop the Romans but unstoppable still survived the empire of the east and also are also cowards because they attack only when the Roman Empire was at its weakest point and then only in 1433 that stopped the Roman empire!ROME ROME !!

You're a moron if you think Rome was an innocent empire and America is tyrannical. Romans were brutal, slave owning, conquerors. They were not interested in helping anybody but themselves.
@tHeWasTeDYouTh No man. This is my worst fear. Rome was the best game ever. From a multiplayer standpoint it was almost like an Olympic sport that's how deep I got into it ;) The Creative Assembly has been going downhill since SEGA acquired them and they'll only ruin the Rome Total War Legacy with a sequel.
@DestroyerAlexandros Actually, Rome: TW was inferior to Medieval: TW in all but graphics. The AI in Rome was terrible and offered no challenge, as opposed to Medieval where the AI was decent, and in these games AI is more important than anything. After Rome came Medieval 2. It was an improvement, but the AI was still gut wrenchingly awful. Then came Empire, AI was slightly better, still bad overall.
Shogun 2: TW, however, is a big improvement. AI still isn't perfect, but back to MTW standards.
@DestroyerAlexandros Medieval 1 AI WAS the best. In Rome I could literally make an army of 1,000 Roman soldiers and defeat an army of 2,000 or more Gauls without taking more than 1 casualty in battle. Thin them down with archers, throw javelins when the enemy get close and the entire enemy army routs. In Medieval the AI actually beats me about 30% of the time, sometimes even when I outnumber and outclass them. Shogun 2 also the AI sometimes wins. Rome was just crap.
@Aethelhald Don't know about that but Rome had great variety online. Each faction was good against certain factions and bad against other factions. Sort of like rock paper scissors. Of course some factions were just crap and the campain is made in a way that with Rome you face the crap factions (Gaul, Numidia, Thrace) and the good factions (Egypt, Brittania, Sele) don't have good units, only mercenaries and shit
@DestroyerAlexandros Vanilla RTW was unplayable in multiplayer for me. Archers were king, so people used one of two setups. Parthia and an army of all horse archers, of Greek City States with an army of Cretan Archers and Spartan Hoplites. Totally pointless, no fun whatsoever.
Also very historically inaccurate. Egyptian units in the time of RTW weren't pharaoh-type units, they were Greek units. Roman soldiers never wore the Hollywood armour, Gauls were more than just shirtless savages.
@Aethelhald WOW you never played CWB rules then. The community played those rules, they were used in almost all tournaments and almost all clan games. Don't remember exactly but it was *let me activate my muscle memory here from typing it at the beginning of games* no artillery/elephants, max 6 same units, max 8 cavalry/archers (missile cav is both), max 2 horse archers. 12.5k or 15k florins. Basically I know so much about this game that I could right a book hehe, but nobody would read it. And
@DestroyerAlexandros Still unplayable. Unit balancing was crap. Factions were totally misrepresented. Gauls were nothing more than shirtless barbarians with terrible units. Rome's Urban Cohorts... what the hell were they meant to be? Rome's Urban Cohort in real history were little more than just town watchmen, not OMGWTF mow everything in front of them down with ease, like they were in vanilla RTW.
Rules or no rules, that game was horrid until Europa Barbarorum fixed it. Except the music.
@Aethelhald Unit balancing was crap, but that's why there were few units, made it more like chess. Not like other games where all the units are the same and equally strong. Gauls were Basket 2. You play hard, you win and you get 5 points instead of 3. Done deal. Rome's urban cohorts were vulnerable to chariots. Britannia and Egypt made Rome look like shit. Sele and Macedon made Brittania and Egypt look like shit. Scythia and Carthage made Sele & Mac look like shit. Rock, paper, scissors man.
@TheGOTH13 Well no I don't agree. Rome was good at management and culturally integrating the conquered factions. They really gave them the feel that they are now a part of a multicultural superpower. They let them keep their religions and rules, and in return those guys gave taxes and men for the army. Many formations of the time could kick Rome's ass, pound for pound, so to say. For example the Sacred Band of Thebes - 150 men, closely nit, they took out whole armies alone.
@Aethelhald a small army with upgraded units was almost always superior over a large army with many units. For example, at 15k Rome vs Rome if you were using a balanced upgraded army (6 cheap archers, 5 urbans, 4 pretorian cav all units upgraded to the maximum) you were gonna beat a big army (6 cav, 6 urbans, 6 archers, 2 town watch for cannon fodder) 90% of the time. I was one of the guys who switched over to small armies because I was king at micromanagement, spreading out units, flanking and
@Aethelhald such, but eventually when I started playing more team games (2v2, 3v3), I switched over to small upgraded armies because it was much easier to control them against multiple opponents. Also there were 4 groups of factions - Inf (Rome, Sele, etc.), Phalanx (Macedon, Greece), Cav & Chariots (Egypt, Brits) and Shit (Gaul, Numidia, etc.). Basically Shit factions were Basket 2 in tourneys, so if you beat a Basket 1 faction with a Basket 2 faction you got more points in ladders (continues)
@Aethelhald and in tournament formats you could only use each faction once, so sooner or later you had to use shit facs and you had to be well rounded. Egypt was widely regarded as the best faction because they had chariots, meaning non-Phalanx factions were a good match up, and they had archers, meaning they could cut slow Phalanx factions down. Of course it was never that simple, at the end of the day micro management of units came first. Being fast to disable fire at will on your urbans when
@Aethelhald the enemy slips a cheap unit to absorb the spears that the Romans throw before engaging, having good memory to remember which units you keep on Guard mode and which not, timing your cavalry so that you could split in the last moment, forcing the enemy to turn and then charging chariots, man it was crazy. @Falconpunch82 Have you heard of Richard Hammond aka the hamster? He presented the show later but I always remember the scottish guy who was originally there. They also had to warfare experts who analysed what the team was doing and what might or might not happen if they carried on as they were. All in all it was great to watch and I heard it sometimes appears on the history channel!
@darkdragon13891 are you kidding me? richard hammond? i am a top gear addict! I CAN'T GO MUCH LONGER UNTIL THE NEW SEASON!! but anyway, i'm sorry to dissapoint you, but i am an american. personally, i wish i was born in scotland, the home of my ancestors and home to the coolest accent in friggen world! but yeah, anyway, are you saying that the rome total war engine was used to illustrate battles on this t.v. show? or are you just saying that the show was the original user of this soundtrack?
@Falconpunch82 What I'm saying is that they actually used this game as the platform of the show (Infact the show actually came out before the game I am sure of that!). They had a team which If i can remember rightly was consisted of 2 generals and 2 lieutenants. Now the two military experts would always tell the teams what really happened at the battle they had played and during the battles they would comment on whether the team was doing the right thing or not.
@Falconpunch82 lol scotland are good they did well against the English in M2TW, infact they wiped them out! Top Gear has just got better and better and the christmas special was excellent! I really hope the cuts in the budget don't affect those lads :-S
@darkdragon13891 Imeant scotland in real life, but yeah, in the game they are okay. In the britannia campaign, though, they are my favorite! Also, I agree with you on top gear! They american version they just came out with is a disgrace in my opinon. Finally: cool, I'll check out that video.
@Falconpunch82 Oh yes Scotland is apparently very nice especially the Hebrides, but I was told to watch out for the midges in the summer - they eat people alive! Who presents the American top gear? And as for the video they have many others like that. The video link I gave you there has the old scottish presenter there. The american military expert there with the glasses is really big in his field as I've seen him countless times in history programs on wars and battles.
@darkdragon13891 *SIGH* uuugghhhh...I don't even know who presents top gear america. probably some bought out presenters who care nothing for cars. I honestly hope the show fails. Is that too mean?
@Falconpunch82 Not really! I'm like that with some of the shows on ITV. Cheap, crap and thick presenters who either consist of washed up celebs or celebs whose carriers aren't really going to peak plus a whole load of people from the wrong parts of Britain who you just wish never had opened their mouths or simply never thought of becoming popstars! Would I be outspoken if I said X Factor was one of them? I hope that show shuts down A.S.A.P
@Falconpunch82 Clarkson gave it away on last nights Top Gear. So you are watching it via live streaming TV on the internet? Ah well those shows don't matter to you now anyway it's just some channel we have here in Britain.
@darkdragon13891 no, i'm not watching it online. WAIT! IS THE NEW SEASON OF TOP GEAR UP AND RUNNING?!?! oh, it probably just airs earlier in britain...
@darkdragon13891 YES! OF COURSE THEY HAVE BRITISH TOP GEAR IN THE STATES! WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME THAT IT WAS BACK ON?!?! i gotta go watch some top gear...
Post any funny/epic/brilliant moment u had in RTW with this soundtrack on.
->Trying to move my massive hastati army towards an armoured hoplite line, while moving my cavalry to theire side... 40 minutes moving it and finally being obliverated becouse hastatti suck against A hoplites
This game is probably the best game I've ever played, maybe expect for Civilization 5, thats a tough one. Although both games have horrible AI. It sucks that Im stuck with shitty slow internet that cant run games online. :{
Seriously they need to BRING THIS GUY BACK FOR SHOGUN 2!!!!
I MEMORIZED R:TW's music during the many battles, always made that much greater by the wonderful music. But I could honestly not tell you what the hell the other musical pieces were in other games.
Your making a Shogun Era war game. The composer of R:TW music is perfect for that!
Honestly, the reasons why I found RTW to be the worst game in the series (so far) would take far more space than what I could possibly fit in here. Without getting into the details, suffice it to say that the campaign AI, battle AI, combat mechanics, unit balance, faction balance, and voice acting are all grossly sub-par (especially when compared to the original Shogun and Medieval). And that's just for starters....
@Rotarrin Oh ok I understand. I had the joy of having played only Rome and M2TwKingdoms so far.So i had the wow factor going and had nothing to compare it to so it was a good introduction for me into the series. I see how M2TWK is a much better balanced game all around.I hear they are making Shogun 2 so i'll look for that one next. Thanx.
....Spoken like someone who started off the series with Rome and never played either of the first two games (Shogun and Medieval). If that is indeed the case, then I suppose I can't blame you; however, there's a reason CA lost such a large percentage of its fanbase when RTW came out. (See my reply to MaximvsDread for a slightly more detailed explanation.)
@Rotarrin Nope, I've played all the total war games and actually started with medieval, then went to medieval 2, whereafter i tried Rome and it just blew my mind.
i like how in the game it shows how hard it can be to control an empire... i could not seem to take over the world... lol i wonder if thats what happened to rome (yes thats what happened)
@chrissjg It's still a lot harder than that. In real life you couldn't see an overhead view of your empire and see exactly where the enemy armies are. If you wanted to know what happened on the other edge of the empire you had to send a messanger who would ride for weeks to get there and more weeks to get back.
@chrissjg Yeah taking over the world is hard in the game. I managed to do it by like 84 B.C. and that was on medium difficulty. Rome did collapse in unto itself no doubt. But it was from lots of factors not just the size of the empire.
Man, this reminds of a time when I routed an army of 500 Armenians with a single group of Archers. I kept them within range of their front lines and when they sent troops forward, I had the archers retreat behind the walls of my city. It was fantastic. Took down so many guys that way.
One of the best RTS games ever made. It's interesting, fun, relatively realistic, and runs smoothly with a simple interface.
Medieval 2 is about the same, but doesn't have the same feel. Empire on the other hand is just too much for me. It is unrealistic, demanding on the computer, and most of all, doesn't have any epic music like RTW and MTW do.
@ImMaxi music and combat fair enough... there's hardly any main-map soundtrack (lame considering the musical wealth of the era), and the combat is rather dull, what with the identical Line Infantry regiments reigning supreme on all sides...
@Switchfoot771 TOTALY agree, Rome is still the best game, with the biggest impact on me [ and alot of others! ]. Empire was just to big.. I just can't wait for Rome 2 Total war, you? :D
@linkshandig1 they'd better make a Rome 2. It was the best game from the whole series. Now they're going back to that Shogun garbage. What's next? Zulu Total War?
@abcdefghijk70833 dude, they need a Greece: Total War. Factions: Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Thebes, Crete, Olympia, Macedon, Persia, etc. Basicly, all Greek City States, Macedon, Crete, Persia, and other Greek enemies, and allies.
@hankock1015 I know! I mean, several mods have attempted that, but nothing is comparable to what the company can to professionally. I mean, if Rome went from a village to an empire, they should have a game where it breaks the cultures of the world into cities, then when the cities conquer eachother (e.g. Athens takes over all the enemies), then can expand to a larger map. They can really expand on the details of the cultures they touched and refine the whole diplomatic system,
@hankock1015 i wold prefer all dept has as part of rome 2 and not a single game that wold be reseived as napolion tw and i think they dont want that to happen again :)
@hankock1015 Dude, you serious? Playing with Greeks is a pain in the ass. The only capable infantry is the Spartans. Their cavalry sucks dick. The only good archers are the Cretans. If you played for Athens, it would be unwinnable.
i liked time commanders. Shame BBC took them after a few shows, yeah i know the people might have sucked commanding but at the time on a big screen like that with a video game that i owned. Playing it on TV! Damn i wish they made one for ETW or MTW!!
yes i agree. But it was intriguing to watch people who have no idea about combat or computers actually try and play it. If they were living in that time period and was the son of a roman leader or other faction's sons leader and had no choice but to command its facinating to see what would happen.
It was indeed fascinating but I think there was a shortage of volunteers wanting to play and that might be why they stopped it.
Teams of Total War players would be as though two experienced Generals had to share the army with two very experienced Centurions who think they know better. It'd be a different approach to the original but I think it would work well.
Shoot the infantry and fight the missile units. In other words, send out the heavy infantry to take out the sk,irmihers (skirmishers are rubbish melee units) and shoot the heavy infantry (so they are less of a threat if they get into combat)
I usually just zerg out with horses and guerilla tactics. Hit and run, hit them, run rest while the enemy marches within range, hit, run, rest while they march. It usually works.
Hahaha, I love this game. Whenever I fight a battle on the field, I always send my cavalry (if I have any) around to ambush the enemy general. That's how I kicked the Gaul's ass, not a single member of their family survived a confrontation with me unless they won the battle... which rarely happened.
Effective strategy my friend but I prefer not to take too much advantage over the computer's inability to command, I prefer fighting in a proper Roman Triplex Acies formation.
It's not hard. Just keep the Hastari in the front rank with the Principes and Triarii in the second and third ranks (usually with a 4:2:1 numbers ratio).
Then Velities run ahead of the battle line to harass the enemy, Equites mass together on a flank to protect against enemy horsement and skrimishers, and the General stands at the back.
Not imaginative, but it nearly always wins via brute force.
lol I think you'll find it might not be too imaginative on a Computer game but in its actually use during history the Roman Triplex Acies (As I'm pretty sure you'll know) was so advanced that they just about trounced most of their foes with it.
Of course, in retrospect only is it simple. It was revolutionary at the time, as was the phalanx for the ancient Greeks before, and the line/sqaure formations of the Napleonic era after. Times change.
But I do still maintain the Romans have the easiest battle tactic to carry out in-game. By comparison the Gauls have more complicated tactics (that is, if you want to win on even terms) where formations are much harder to maintain and troops far less reliable.
Barring the Germans, in my opinion, though quite why the most savage of the Barbarian nations would employ the phalanx formation and have possibly the best archer unit in the game I have no idea.
Though that was largely mitigated by their terrible starting location. What use is there having such good units when you can't even afford their training and upkeep?
The Briton's weren't bad either. If you knew their playstyle.
@DestroyerAlexandros That just proves that the pen truly is mightier than the sword... never heard of 150 warriors destroying entire armies though :|

Oh and Wales! :) you?
darkdragon13891 1 year ago
@darkdragon13891 are you kidding me? richard hammond? i am a top gear addict! I CAN'T GO MUCH LONGER UNTIL THE NEW SEASON!! but anyway, i'm sorry to dissapoint you, but i am an american. personally, i wish i was born in scotland, the home of my ancestors and home to the coolest accent in friggen world! but yeah, anyway, are you saying that the rome total war engine was used to illustrate battles on this t.v. show? or are you just saying that the show was the original user of this soundtrack?
Falconpunch82 1 year ago
@Falconpunch82 What I'm saying is that they actually used this game as the platform of the show (Infact the show actually came out before the game I am sure of that!). They had a team which If i can remember rightly was consisted of 2 generals and 2 lieutenants. Now the two military experts would always tell the teams what really happened at the battle they had played and during the battles they would comment on whether the team was doing the right thing or not.
See this:

@Falconpunch82 lol scotland are good they did well against the English in M2TW, infact they wiped them out! Top Gear has just got better and better and the christmas special was excellent! I really hope the cuts in the budget don't affect those lads :-S
But anyway I chose Wales as, well, I'm welsh! :D
darkdragon13891 1 year ago
@darkdragon13891 Imeant scotland in real life, but yeah, in the game they are okay. In the britannia campaign, though, they are my favorite! Also, I agree with you on top gear! They american version they just came out with is a disgrace in my opinon. Finally: cool, I'll check out that video.
Falconpunch82 1 year ago
@Falconpunch82 Oh yes Scotland is apparently very nice especially the Hebrides, but I was told to watch out for the midges in the summer - they eat people alive! Who presents the American top gear? And as for the video they have many others like that. The video link I gave you there has the old scottish presenter there. The american military expert there with the glasses is really big in his field as I've seen him countless times in history programs on wars and battles.
darkdragon13891 1 year ago
@darkdragon13891 *SIGH* uuugghhhh...I don't even know who presents top gear america. probably some bought out presenters who care nothing for cars. I honestly hope the show fails. Is that too mean?
Falconpunch82 1 year ago

I MEMORIZED R:TW's music during the many battles, always made that much greater by the wonderful music. But I could honestly not tell you what the hell the other musical pieces were in other games.
Your making a Shogun Era war game. The composer of R:TW music is perfect for that!

@MaximvsDread
Rotarrin 1 year ago
@Rotarrin Oh ok I understand. I had the joy of having played only Rome and M2TwKingdoms so far.So i had the wow factor going and had nothing to compare it to so it was a good introduction for me into the series. I see how M2TWK is a much better balanced game all around.I hear they are making Shogun 2 so i'll look for that one next. Thanx.
MaximvsDread 1 year ago
@Rotarrin This is like the best game ever made! None of the other total war games have surpassed it, and any other game for that matter.
SternMann93 1 year ago
@SternMann93
....Spoken like someone who started off the series with Rome and never played either of the first two games (Shogun and Medieval). If that is indeed the case, then I suppose I can't blame you; however, there's a reason CA lost such a large percentage of its fanbase when RTW came out. (See my reply to MaximvsDread for a slightly more detailed explanation.)
Rotarrin 1 year ago
@Rotarrin Nope, I've played all the total war games and actually started with medieval, then went to medieval 2, whereafter i tried Rome and it just blew my mind.

i like how in the game it shows how hard it can be to control an empire... i could not seem to take over the world... lol i wonder if thats what happened to rome (yes thats what happened)
chrissjg 1 year ago
@chrissjg It's still a lot harder than that. In real life you couldn't see an overhead view of your empire and see exactly where the enemy armies are. If you wanted to know what happened on the other edge of the empire you had to send a messanger who would ride for weeks to get there and more weeks to get back.
sabatonbloodysabaton 1 year ago
@chrissjg Yeah taking over the world is hard in the game. I managed to do it by like 84 B.C. and that was on medium difficulty. Rome did collapse in unto itself no doubt. But it was from lots of factors not just the size of the empire.

Switchfoot771 2 years ago 25
I think Empire is the biggest failure of 2009. Reasons enough. Music, campaign, combat, ambiance, all less than in RTW and M2TW.
ImMaxi 2 years ago 3
@ImMaxi music and combat fair enough... there's hardly any main-map soundtrack (lame considering the musical wealth of the era), and the combat is rather dull, what with the identical Line Infantry regiments reigning supreme on all sides...
rvkice23 2 years ago
U forgot no speeches they bragged too much about the combat because it's not that good. And u get no drama when generals die.
The only good thing ion that game is The road to independance the ship fighting and the way can use enviroment to fight the rest is just fail.

@linkshandig1 they'd better make a Rome 2. It was the best game from the whole series. Now they're going back to that Shogun garbage. What's next? Zulu Total War?
abcdefghijk70833 11 months ago
@abcdefghijk70833 dude, they need a Greece: Total War. Factions: Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Thebes, Crete, Olympia, Macedon, Persia, etc. Basicly, all Greek City States, Macedon, Crete, Persia, and other Greek enemies, and allies.
hankock1015 11 months ago 13
@hankock1015 I know! I mean, several mods have attempted that, but nothing is comparable to what the company can to professionally. I mean, if Rome went from a village to an empire, they should have a game where it breaks the cultures of the world into cities, then when the cities conquer eachother (e.g. Athens takes over all the enemies), then can expand to a larger map. They can really expand on the details of the cultures they touched and refine the whole diplomatic system,
abcdefghijk70833 11 months ago

Damn i wish they made one for ETW or MTW!!
jungleboy1 2 years ago
I stand by the fact that they should start that again and if nothing else, let teams of Total War players at it.
It'd be ultimate to watch players who all THINK they know how to play, have to work together aswell as NOT do the mouse clicking themselves.
From Armchair General to Actual General.
Poltair 2 years ago
yes i agree. But it was intriguing to watch people who have no idea about combat or computers actually try and play it. If they were living in that time period and was the son of a roman leader or other faction's sons leader and had no choice but to command its facinating to see what would happen.
jungleboy1 2 years ago
It was indeed fascinating but I think there was a shortage of volunteers wanting to play and that might be why they stopped it.
Teams of Total War players would be as though two experienced Generals had to share the army with two very experienced Centurions who think they know better. It'd be a different approach to the original but I think it would work well.

Don't spose anyone can suggest a strategy which involves heavy infantry and missiles that actually works.
thedane34 2 years ago
Shoot the infantry and fight the missile units. In other words, send out the heavy infantry to take out the sk,irmihers (skirmishers are rubbish melee units) and shoot the heavy infantry (so they are less of a threat if they get into combat)

I usually just zerg out with horses and guerilla tactics. Hit and run, hit them, run rest while the enemy marches within range, hit, run, rest while they march. It usually works.

satomiigpx 2 years ago 35
Hahaha, I love this game. Whenever I fight a battle on the field, I always send my cavalry (if I have any) around to ambush the enemy general. That's how I kicked the Gaul's ass, not a single member of their family survived a confrontation with me unless they won the battle... which rarely happened.
EdikShepherd 2 years ago
Effective strategy my friend but I prefer not to take too much advantage over the computer's inability to command, I prefer fighting in a proper Roman Triplex Acies formation.
Poltair 2 years ago
You must be pretty good if you keep your units in realistic Roman formations
EdikShepherd 2 years ago
It's not hard. Just keep the Hastari in the front rank with the Principes and Triarii in the second and third ranks (usually with a 4:2:1 numbers ratio).
Then Velities run ahead of the battle line to harass the enemy, Equites mass together on a flank to protect against enemy horsement and skrimishers, and the General stands at the back.
Not imaginative, but it nearly always wins via brute force.
andromidius 2 years ago
Similar to the formation used by the Julii in the Battle of River Trebia? Okay, I'll try it.
EdikShepherd 2 years ago
Kind of. Only without being massacred because you weren't watching the enemy's elephants.
andromidius 2 years ago
lol I think you'll find it might not be too imaginative on a Computer game but in its actually use during history the Roman Triplex Acies (As I'm pretty sure you'll know) was so advanced that they just about trounced most of their foes with it.
Poltair 2 years ago
Of course, in retrospect only is it simple. It was revolutionary at the time, as was the phalanx for the ancient Greeks before, and the line/sqaure formations of the Napleonic era after. Times change.
But I do still maintain the Romans have the easiest battle tactic to carry out in-game. By comparison the Gauls have more complicated tactics (that is, if you want to win on even terms) where formations are much harder to maintain and troops far less reliable.
Only the Greeks are easier.
andromidius 2 years ago
The Barbarian factions were severely out classed in Rome, that was one thing that annoyed me.
Poltair 2 years ago
Barring the Germans, in my opinion, though quite why the most savage of the Barbarian nations would employ the phalanx formation and have possibly the best archer unit in the game I have no idea.
Though that was largely mitigated by their terrible starting location. What use is there having such good units when you can't even afford their training and upkeep?
The Briton's weren't bad either. If you knew their playstyle.
andromidius 2 years ago
To be completely honest as much as everyone eems to hate it I'm really enjoying Empire Total War right now and I'll be buying Napoleon Total war too.
