First off - calling him an operatic singer is illinformed at best - as much as I know, he didn't even have any professional vocal training at all, ever. Secondly - you can clearly hear the difference between the volumes before the chorus and during it - and tell me, did you ever hear an allegedly "opera" singer sing quieter than he speaks? Oh, and the gasp for air is prerecorded (if you're singing with playback, might as well conceal it).

So yeah, it is playback. Sad to inform you.

Out of Rammstein's entire discography, this song and its live performance have gripped me the most. It can be so much more than just BDSM, especially considering the way the chorus is sung, like an abusive partner trying to rationalise what he's doing. It's a physical torment with emotional repurcussions.
