Deathcrush, and the two demos were considered extreme death metal according to them. and when you look at the lyrics of Mayhem's songs from Deathcrush, you'll notice the songs were more about death than Black Metal's purpose/message. When Dead became Mayhem's new vocolist, that's when these bands began to wear corpse paint. Mayhem began the black metal scene with Emperor. Darkthrone, Immortal,

The german thrash trio (Sodom, Kreator, and Destruction), Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, and Bathory were all prototyping it, but they had no idea that they were.
