I was always in equitation but I have always admired contesting. The teams who win are pros and really talented and work hard at doing this well. It is not easy, to say the least. I love to see a good team who works together well. I watch these events when I can and enjoy them a great deal.

And I agree with the people who are saying these arguments are stupid and pointless. I whip my horses and use bumper spurs with rowels on them because umm... barrel racing is a SPEED event and it makes my horses RUN harder? Duh. I'd like for anyone to tell me I'm cruel to my horses when they get fed and treated as good as any horse out there. If anyone has a problem with that they can watch my vids and tell me if those horses are in pain. I think not.

i ride wit bumper spurs to and my horse doesnt evn seemed bothered by it... i can kick her for hours if shes being a brat and NOT goin in the arena. (shes got thoroughbred nn quarter horse in her) me n her bump heads a lot and the only time i use that whip is to get her to go IN then i drop it b4 i evn enter cuz i really dont need it. go look at my videos u'll see

not to be rude or anything but... im a barrel racer and just because we use whips doesnt mean we're cruel and all that crap. sure some people might whip theyre horses to much but in barrel racing if u wanna win ur gonna whip ur horse. both my horses barrel horses and when im running barrels i whip them to make them go faster. its just apart of barrel racing.

PEOPLE NEED TO STFU. its riding. we do it to win. just because barrels racers need to go fast and use whips to get a quick response out of horses does not mean they get hurt.

its just a stereotype, like texanhorselover said.like saying all small dogs are nice and bigs dogs are mean.most of the time its the other way around because smalldogs are "cuter" therefore get treated with less discipline.

ive run barrels for 10 years and i have never touched a whip. and to tell you the truth i think derssege is cruel. horses dont naturally move like that people are constantly holding a death grip on their horses mouths and some dressage trainers beat the shit out of their horses when they do one thing wrong

I have been riding dressage for 7 years and not once have I ever used a whip to hit her, she was beat very badly when she was young and now she is barly scared of the whip, i only use the crop free lungeing and i only tap it on my leg, everybody thinks dressage horses are snobbly and beat and are only in it for the ribbons but when I go to a show i don't expect to win. sure i would like a ribbon but not enuff to beat my or any1 else's horse.

not all barrel racers beat their horses mercilessly with whips. In fact, most of them don't. It's like saying all english riders are pompous, rude and snobby. It's just a stupid stereotype. Just because you're nice to your horse doesn't mean everyone else isn't.

face it some people out there treat horses like crap, but some people out there like us cowgirls treat our horses like they are the world. now luvmypercheron you dont even know all the barrel racers and pole benders so dont even try saying that we all beat and whip our horses i for one dont even own a whip. plus my horse Buck all i do is yell "fly boy" and he runs with all his might and after we get out of the ring he gets all the treats he wants.

I loved that special video where some one's horse just started bucking, then someown else's horse threw back its head in such a way that it knocked the rider clean off its back and then another horse started out to buck but then reared and slipped over backwards. How did you do all that stuff? VERY impressive.

I live in UK but I should think that to do it you would need those speciall very speedy over a quarter of a mile horses. The ones that used to be used for "cutting" horses in the old days. You used to be able to get special shoes for these horses that were not flat. They were sort of cambered and shaped so that they cut into the ground so that the horse's feet and legs tilted with him on the turns instead of "going flat". I saw it in a Western Horseman many, many years ago.
