After all this time, I still haven't heard reporters talking about what kind of nation, what kind of system of government, the individual Afghan people actually want in Afghanistan (as opposed to all the politicians who tell us everything we want to hear).

That's not an accurate description of the American war effort at all. And it presumes an authority in the theatre that no historian would ever back. UK, Russia,Canada and others fought for years before the States entered. The US didn't rescue Europe anymore than WWI was only about Europe. It simply started there, so the tactic to fight there rather than American soil should the event happen, was as much out of self-preservation as anything as evidenced by it's trigger, Pearl Harbour.
