At Neil Aspinall's funeral, George Martin apologized to Pete Best. He said he never wanted Pete out of the band he just didn't want him playing on "Love Me Do".

He didn't want Ringo playing either.

The thing that everyone seams to overlook is that the most common reason someone gets kicked out of a band usually has nothing to do with their musical ability. It's just a question of who do you want in your band. You want someone you like. Paul didn't get Denny Laine because he was the world's greatest guitarist and Linda wasn't the world's greatest singer. He just wanted to play with people he liked, and the Beatles liked Ringo better, and wanted him in the band. It's pretty straight forward.

Pete Best is/was firmly stuck in the backbeat style of the 1950's. Ringo's c/w beat added to the Hamburg honed Merseybeat of the Beatles is what created to finalized the sound that the world came to know.

I like Pete Best but why 2 drummers here if Pete was best why can't he stand on his own? I read a book.George Martin said Pete Best was kind of o k but he acted aloof from the spirit and overall essence of The Beatles. Pete was not into it like the other 3, Pete was kind of a deadbeat so to speak so he was asked to leave and Ringo joined.Ringo had sat in before.Ringo came up with the magically wonderful song Octopus's Garden.What the fuck did Pete ever come up with.There! @saltcitysuesey some bands have two drummers and not only is that not a reflection of a drummer being bad, playing with another drummer wouldn't work if one of the drummers wasn't any good and couldn't keep good time as it would throw off the whole band. Ringo himself plays with another drummer in his All Starr bands, as in his case, most of the songs he sings he comes out in front of the band but still great bands such as the Doobie Brothers, the Allman Brothers, and others use two drummers

If you have a look around youtube you can find vids where Pete Best is playing drums by himself. His playing isn't anything to get very excited about - but it is perfectly solid, competent playing.

The other drummer is his half brother Roag - I think the idea was that when Pete came out of retirement he needed some moral support. Can't be easy when you haven't played for decades and the whole world wants to scrutinise your playing to see why you were kicked out of the Beatles ;-)

Pete Best was sacked because he could only churn out basic 8 and 16 beat rhythms with no subtlety or expression, plus his tempo constantly wavered. Ringo was not technically brilliant but he was still much better than Best. Beats me why you'd play a gig in a venue of this size with two drummers - especially since you are basically luring punters in because of your history was a drummer.

If the Beatles didn't hire him for 25 lbs. a week as a temp drummer, he'd have been a scrubber shining shoes on Mathew street. Pete's new cd is the best cd by a solo Beatle in 20 yrs. I have seen both Ringo and Pete. Ringo also uses 2 drummers in his shows.

I watched Pete play from 20 feet away for over an hour. There was nothing wrong with his drumming. He is a solid Rock and Roll drummer. If he was so terribl e The Beatles would not have had him around for 2+ years. His place in Rock history is secured. By the way, he is a hell of a nice guy. Last month he played in India in front of 250,000 ...that is 5 times the size of Shea stadium. Was given a heroes welcome.
