I have one on my antenna right how, been hammering away for about an hour, this is the third year now and its only happens in very early spring.
I wonder if its to attract a mate , because this only happens for a few weeks in early spring each year ?

no, they don't hurt them selves.
and no he isn't confused. they will choose structures like these. any surface that will make a racket when banged on they will choose. even over natural trees.
