"You couldn't take this case to an American court and win." How prescient. Why more couldn't see that has always amazed me. To call Tim Russert a journalist is an insult to anyone with a shred of credibility in the profession. What a joke! "When you look at Saddam Hussein, do you think he's a threat? Do you think he has chemical or biological weapons?" A credible journalist would've asked where is the proof that justifies launching a full-fledged invasion of another country. What a hack!
It's amazing how wrong Thompson was in that Bush stopped Iraq from destroying the US with all those weapons if mass destruction and then removing the national debt and fixing the economy bringing about an era of unprecedented prosperity.
Hunter predicted a radical cocksucker like Bush back in 1969 and said that someone like nixon will pale in comparison to a future prospect of a nation getting crazier.
Bush was perhaps the worse president we've ever had. He drove the car into the ditch and we are stuck. Obama is not such a bad president for an inexperienced guy. Ron Paul is the best we've got in the running right now. Far from perfect but again he's the only one who can drive us out of the ditch.
Terrible UHF reception, eh? I'd point out that Who'd Controlling What in Washington, who is the best LEADER is an issue we see with President Obama still, that people have the lowest opinion on Government in ages, Thompson hits the nail on the head

The drugs had done their damage by this time... A brilliant mind of our time done in by too many drugs. His mind was fried. Listen to him in 1968 and compare to this... sad.
@beelzabubba What video were you watching? He's a senior citizen at this point. I see scores of senior citizens everyday and the tempo of they're conversations are in the same neighborhood. Just because he's not firing off 100 words a minute, he's fried? Thompson say's what he means to say. Which requires taking the time to choose his word wisely, as to not be easily taken out of context. Thompson was well composed.
@FEARandLOATHINGgirl i believe future generations will as long as we keep the word alive now. and turn on new people. other then people who like fear and loathing in las vegas. . or the rum diarys. . HOWEVER; that is a place to start. with the people who only know of raoul duke. .or like him because of those movies
@theeturnone Fear & Loathing is what made me fall in love with him. Then I craved more Gonzo and went to Where the Buffalo Roam. After that I was hooked and read The Rum Diary (this was years before the movie). I've watched every single documentary made about him. I've most recently watched The Rum Dairy, but didn't care for it too much. I am working my way through The Proud Highway now.
I wish everyone who enjoyed the movies took the next step too. He has so much wisdom to share.
I admire and love Thompson, but the case against the war could have been made much better than the case he makes here. So interesting to look at this from 2011, when we now know and acknowledge what a mistake and tragedy the BS wars are and were.
@ChilloutSessionZ Yeah. HST was killed by a single .45 cal. gunshot to the head. The bullet lodged in the ceiling of his office. His wife was in the next room.
@ChilloutSessionZ No. He did it himself. 15 minutes after his son Juan and his wife left Woody Creek. Hunter always asked obsessively about the condition of the car, the tires, and the brakes. he had a paranoia about cars getting stuck in the middle of nowhere just as a global cataclysm or something occurred. Juan left, Hunter went into his office, sent a fax to the Editor of Rolling Stone, typed a few lines (mainly "this won't hurt) then put the gun in his mouth and fired.
Despite the drug taking in his early years, he still has an amazing wit & insight. Only thing is he has this difficulty to breathe which might have been a result of smoking for 50 yrs. I'm only guessing but didn't Hunter take his own life due to respiratory illness?
"this is a war we will be bogged down in for a generation" prediction come true. we need another hunter s thompson, but no one like this man will ever exist again
The prescient nature of HST's observations seem unreal. In the age of information, it is important to know the facts, while carefully examining the producer of these facts. The issue Russert asserts several times (the prime arguments for the second Iraq war), have never been fully examined openly and with recourse. Who gave W the info? who did they get it from? CIA might as well stand for Curiously Invisible Agency.
@foolchild0 His peers didn't think so. Neither did his audience, or the bulk of his interviewees. But YOUR opinion obviously holds considerably more weight.......LOL!
I'm laughing.....*wipes eye*.....because no one really gives a fuck how you feel about a dead, highly regarded, award winning journalist. It's the curse of being irrelevant, my friend.
@creamyapanties Well, obviously you do, or you wouldn't have taken the time to respond, and to vociferously defend Russert. Wait. I though YOU were my boyfriend! That IS why you like taking guys like me to a park, right? For a little, "Reader's Digest?" A word to the wise, though; if you bite me or refuse to swallow, I swear I'll crush your trachea with a fanbelt.
@foolchild I agree. My come on your back does have a certain brilliant sheen, especially when dappled by sunlight. But your views from back there aren't really that interesting.
@foolchild0 To the miniscule mind, even the most basic, slopes of common thought are as unassailable as Mount Everest, and appear just as....."dizzying".
Then why are you replying you fucking idiot? Maybe if you read a book or two in your life you'd have better shit running through your head then contradicting yourself talking shit on youtube to strangers.
@Svitlo37 I think my reading comprehension is fine. I think your ego is not. I fail to see what I have said to you implies that I do not read, or that it is even a problem if someone does not read. You may need to review the meaning of the word contradiction.
Ya see this is what I'm talking about. You claim you don't give a shit about what I have to say, but here you are getting into an argument that has already taken up half of the comments page.
How bad do you need people to know that you don't care? Tell me that. Or better, don't.
I don't like speaking ill of the dead, but Russert ended his career as a shill for the beltway party line.
Thompson had been drunk every day for about forty years before this interview, but he laid out exactly what the questions were that real journalists should have been asking before that invasion.
I'm not convinced by any video or book I've read by Hunter S Thompson that he's the genius so many claim he was. He certainly doesn't make especially coherent arguments to support his positions. I'm not saying he's wrong about some of what he's saying, but he's certainly not articulate.
hunter's suicide was strange, he was one of the first to start talking about gov involvement in 911, he did do drugs but it doesn't matter a lot of people listened to what he had to say.
Hunter was smart and leading edge, and most of us can't handle that many drugs nor should we try. He was a prophet and hedonist and a prescient soul... yet he couldnt handle it all, so he blew his brains out. Good for him. He saw his ride coming, and he caught it.

Just listen to Tim shill for the White House's war effort. The US media still has a lot to answer for the days when it pressed the war agenda unquestioned.
@northwestern578 Both are a mirror image for each other. Why? They are both puppets, speaking pieces for the Hidden Hand that controls the world. Bush DID A LOT to add to the Depression (not recession) we are in. Once you realize both parties in America are actually working for each other, you will see it. "It" being that all presidents since JFK getting shot have been fake. They don't give a shit about us, never have. Best advice, don't rely on the government!
@northwestern578 Wow! Obama has done nothing. Funny considering his biggest detractors accuse him of doing everything from bastardizing the consitution, to brainwashing our children, to turning America into a socialist dictator state and god knows what else. That's an awful lot to accomplish for a guy who has supposedly "done nothing". But isn't that what the Right wants after all? A government that does nothing? An impotent beaureaucracy. They should be happy with a do nothing president
In retrospect now, we all see that Hunter spoke with intelligence and non-prejudice, and the truth was, Saddam was never a threat to the US (it's was al-Qaeda, different bunch of people), and now he's dead (Saddam), the threat still lives on, it's made no difference, if anything it's exacerbated the situation. Kinda makes a mockery of the whole war eh? Bless the folks that are fighting it though. R.I.P. those guys, and R.I.P. HST

The only thing that really worried me is the ether: There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. And I know he'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.
Boy, loooking back now Thompson was right on target about the war, Bush and Saddam and the whole Republican agenda. Russerts still crying "9/11" and Hunter questions the legitimacy of the war and has doubts about whose actually in charge here which at the time was somewhat radical. He even talks about Bush running the Country into the ground financially and just look what happend since then, this was in 03'. He was right on point whenever you can understand what the fuck hes saying.
He should have committed suicide by having a Satanist take out his adrenaline glands. Imagine smoking that shit! But yeh, Thompson is a fucking legend, and all you cunts mourning over him are soft bastards. Instead of being all miserable, why not act a bit more like Hunter S. Thompson. That way, he won't ever really die. That way, it won't be his rareness that keeps him alive, but his weirdness.
I wish he were still I live, I would love to hear his writings on Dick Cheney, given how much he hated Nixon and how bruttaly he tore into him. And also I would love to hear what he thinks about Obama's half assing it and the state of the America populace being so much like sheep.
i love it. these fucking broadcasting liberals expect hunter to be duke. an off beat degenerate who took too much acid.... and every fucking interview he takes control and gets you on his side. man i wish he ran for president. RIP HST
Making very logical points/observations which many Americans did accept nor believe for another 5 years.
(Miss him & Tim both. Two great journalist who truely seemed to love their country even if at times they had to report things others didn't want to hear or were ready to accept.)
I went with Lizzid to see Hunter at Loeb Student Center NYU in 1982, at a lecture, he was an hour late and refused to start the lecture until he got a roll of toilet paper and a bucket of ice. After the student staff realized he wasn't kidding...they ran off and got him what he wanted. Upon receipt of the ice and the toilet paper roll, he opened up his briefcase, pulled out a bottle of Wild Turkey, took a glass filled it with ice and booze, used the roll of TP as a mic stand and started! OMG

Maybe he knew too much, no doubt about it. Wish he were still here--but we people in the know need to keep his knowledge alive!

OMG

It's incredible how coherent and audible he is here.
Many times I've heard him, especially in the later years, he was almost unintelligible.
I'm gonna miss 'im.
