read the Johnny Winter biography "Raisin' Cain" to get the real scoop, let's just say Johnny was a little "over medicated" for most of his career, read the book, it's good
Sadly, Johnny is not in "top form". He is a mere shell of his former playing self, and that which he became famous for is about 10 years gone. What he is now is an emeritus blues player: he still plays guitar, but his ability to play the firey leads with the guttural yells is gone. We give him the respect he is due and pay him the honors he deserves for his career, but if you expect to see him playing a high energy show with lightning-quick leads, you're in for a huge disappointment. He's effete
Whoops, meant to give the guy above this a THUMBS DOWN !We saw him 2 years ago with his Brother and Rick Derringer, He was Amazingly quick, sharp, AND in great voice. HooRah!
I do not know what you would consider quick, sharp, and in great voice, but Johnny is not any of those any more. I LOVE Johnny too much to bullshit myself or others. I've seen him perhaps 25 times from 1974 until he became "disabled" back in late 1999-2000's. For the two years preceding that, it was obvious Johnny was losing something - his playing was definitely slipping. When he next came on stage in early 2000's, he could not play any more. I had to leave the venue in tears.
There is an explanation. You should understand that Johnny had a terrible management team (Teddy Slatus) that basically sucked the life out of him for years, which led to various bouts with booze and pills. His body/mind could not take the strain and it led to some kind of complete breakdown and subsequent loss of playing ability - most of which has he not recovered. His playing is now at about half the speed it used to be, and he is obviously a very old man now.
saw johnny Feb 21 '08 in california and he was absolutely in top form as a guitar player-it was great to see the legend doing what he still does fantastically! GO SEE THIS MAN....

I agree. He is not "Back in top form". He might be better than a decade ago, but he is only a shadow of the Johnny Winter we used to know. Sadly.
