@thatsmybucket Ford now equals Toyota in quality - but like any car you need to look at the actual model. I do have a friend who has a 2001 that has 232'000 km on hers and the interior, the body, the alloy wheels all look new. The paint has faded and chipped from driving - but she has put almost no money into the car except maintainence. and a fuel line that froze.

@thatsmybucket Ford's reliability is now equal to the Japanese brands... but this car has some minor issues. It has a stiff ride as it was designed to be an Euro touring car. The body holds up - but the interior tends to be rattled to death. They can be bought cheaper than an Eclipse but have more 'minor' repairs. If it had the recall repairs done - it can be a long life car.  A buddy has 232k on their's

But, I do agree, the headlights look like a Jap Car. :[ I wish Pontiac was still alive. Although, Mercury marketed a kit for the tailights to cut them down to Corvette imitation lights. :]

ZNs and XRs were just different badges for different years. I figured it out on wiki that showed the whole timeline of the car.

It seems a shame to put a manual on this car but 70% were sold with them. Americans love auto transmissions, even on smaller underpowered cars. The idea of an auto Focus or Fit is silly

Oh yeah- What does the ZN stand for? Someone on my block owns one, but I've also seen the XR version. They both seem like just badge and interior upgrades and I've only seen them on the 02 models. I've owned 2 '99 models with all the options drivetrain and interior and they had no special badging. I wonder if either the ZN or XR have any of the SVT engine mods? Every one I've seen has had auto so they seem more "fancy" than "performance" options.

I thought the same thing with the auto trans. Seems a waste. I've owned plenty of both and in the US with so many long straight roads, the autos make sense. But with smaller, high-revving and/or under powered cars, a 5-spd is a must. I can't imagine my Cougar without a stick. It's all that makes it bearable.
