  • Thanks for posting. Saw it on tv with my mom when I was a kid. I forgot alot of it and wanted to see if I still hate it. YEP.

  • in the book she gets executed and then some years later they find his bones next to hers in the catacombs cause he committed suicide,,,,,,I can't remember an ending that just had me bawling like a baby....if you can handle the long books of Hugo then you should read this classic

  • the best film i think in 1939-charles laughton ,what an actor--very moving acting and music

  • I <3 Why was I not made of stone thee? best line in any movie ever :'(

  • I wish Gringoire had been in the Disney version. Love that man. Never liked Phoebus in any version.

  • This instrumental version of the final chorus is used in "It's a Wonderful Life."

Any smart people know the name of it?

  • @Evergreen6991 It's called "Hallelujah", but unfortunately I don't know who it's performed by and I can't find a track on the internet anywhere.

  • The same music used in, "The Robe." :) Songs

  • in the end he's going to commit suicide because he was betrayed. if that, i'd rather like the version where she gets killed!

  • Beautiful ending!

However, I haven't still decided whether it is happy (because Esmeralda and Gringoire end up together and they are both decent nice people) or sad because they leave Quasi. Maybe they went back to visit him after???

Who am I kidding, it's sad isn't it? :( *hugs Quasi*

  • This movie is infinitely better than the bullshit Hollywood churns out nowadays.

  • Why do Film makers always change the story line of Hunchback of Notre Dame?

  • @TheIxtlan

i know! im so confused. the first time it was he saving her and they live happily ever after, then i heard that the true story was they get executed. now it's this? sucks :(

  • Great movie. Do you have any more of Maureen O'Hara's?

  • sometimes I wish I was made of stone, at least you'd feel nothing

  • Sir Cedric is amazing. It makes me cry when he gets thrown off at the end

  • The last line makes it look cynical.

  • does esmarelda even go back to say thanks,or even say hi?

  • @redflame89100 Probably not.

  • when Quasi says to the gargoyle "Why was I not made of stone like thee?" ...It breaks my heart! Quas....i after all that you need a big HUG!!!!!!!!!!

  • Random fact:

The man who plays Clopin is the first man to obtain the BIG THREE AWARDS: Academy (for "Stagecoach"), Emmy, and Tony Award winner Thomas Mitchell, most notably remembered for playing Gerald O' Hara, the father of Scarlett O' Hara in "Gone with the Wind."

The man who plays Gringoire is Edmond O' Brien, who later won the Academy Award for "The Barefoot Contessa" and is well known for the film "DOA".

  • "Why was I not made of stone like thee?"

    Glorious movie line.

  • I might be a sap but I think this movie is exceptional

  • charlie laughton greatest role

  • why did she leave him in this havent watched full version?

  • Wow, Esmeralda, that sure was nice of you to thank Quasimodo for everything he did for you... y'know, rescuing you when you were about to be hanged, and protecting you from Frollo and whatnot. OH WAIT. YOU DIDN'T. >:(

Oh well, at least Quasi lives in this version. Which is more than I can say for the book!

  • Comment removed

  • @FlippinBooks Yep, even when she is reminded to thank him by Claude, she doesn't. Stupid girl.

  • ''why wasnt i made out of stone like the''

  • AMAIzING MOVIE

  • What an ungrateful bitch!

  • in the book esmeralda was hung

  • whoops, not in this movie. but it is still terribly sad!!!

  • my only problem with the movie is that it ends so sad. it ends with him saying, "and know i have no friends" you can't get much more depressing. i hate that after all he quasimodo does for her, she just leaves him

  • Lovely film! Too bad Clopin died, though. I mean, they let Esmeralda and Quasimodo live, couldn't they spared Clopin too? Haha!

  • very good film version (and this is the third one I've seen, after the Disney & 1923 versions, which are excellent).

  • I would love to be able to download this classic film!

  • it was on Turner Classic Movie this past weekend.....it was good

  • First view for me, and I thought the film had tremendous grip and drive throughout. I was pulled on from scene to scene by the whole thing.

Something quite magical about it all, as tho' it were just made of gold.

But I haven't read the book.

Thrilling film-naking with all its flaws.

  • Charles Laughton was my favorite quasimodo

  • Thanks for uploading this timeless film. I haven't seen it since I was a kid.

  • Great Movie had to watch if for a 1939 film class!

  • why were i not made of stone, like thee

  • The choral music was also used in the Robe fo 1953.

  • There are similarities to KING KONG 1933 and for good reason. RKO pictures, Max Steiner .... and the stories are some what similar, and sad too.

  • One thing I forgot: Thank you, HugosNotreDame, for uploading this. I love this movie!

  • I keep coming back to this adaptation as well; this was my third time watching it in a year, haha. It's hard to look at other versions when I enjoy this one so much.

  • The "Hallelujah" choir was later reused in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life," when George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) is brought back into the real world.

  • 1939 a great year for movies.

  • Yes of course. The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind etc.

  • I'm glad they actually did something with Gringoire. I hate how movie versions just want to minimize his character or remove him altogether. He's my most favorite character from the book because there's a dorky charm to him.

  • this has been my favourite adaptation so far, even if its not the most accurate one^^

  • "Why was I not made of stone like thee?"

The best last line of any movie ever.

  • Good movie.

Of course. the ending to the book is far more heart-rending...which is why I kind of like this one better :P

  • this ending is a lot better than disney's ending. yes quasi and esmerelda survive, unlike in the book, but quasi never gets the friends and acceptance he deserves. a far more powerful statement on tolerance than disney's pampered 'everyone's happy' ending.

  • well you have to remember it's a disney movie the hidden meaning is still there but they had to sugar coat it for the kids. i think the meaning is still there it's just a little more watered down because it's for little kids

  • There is a lesser known version of the novel but it is the most faithful to it, with Anthony Hopkins as Quasimodo. It is the only version in which Esmeralda dies at the end.

  • lordalessan, it's 1982 version, but Esme doesn't die (Quasi does). Nevertheless it's much more faithful to the novel than this one

  • I stand corrected.

  • I meant Anthony Quinn, not Anthony Hopkins. I must admit however that the Quasimodo of the 1982 version is much uglier than Anthony Quinn was

  • The one version that Lordalessan speaks about with Anthony Hopkins as Quasimodo is the 1956 version, not the 1982 version. I agree with the comments of lordalessan that the 1956 version is the closest to the novel in which both Esmeralda and Quasimodo die at the end and with a powerful and masterful ending.

  • @HugosNotreDame how could they have an adaptation where she doens't die? that's kind of a major part of the story. it motivates the conclusion of the book with quasi holding her corpse until he dies.

  • @TADGELL Seems like they could... :( Honestly, if a novel has many adaptations, you can be sure most of them did some #&^%^& to it. Unfortunately

  • @HugosNotreDame Urg, I would love to see Anthony Hopkins, but Esme is such a simpering idiot, I couldn't get past her begging Frollo for help.

  • Comment removed

  • @retzallocco - But the song for the ending credits suggests that Quasi is the exception and that discrimination is still rife.

  • Better than the version with Anthony Quinn. Laughton is fantastic and the end of the movie is brilliant.

  • I have always loved that line 'Why was I not made of stone like these?', that is why I am still single, too many people rely on physical appearances, they do not see past that.

  • I have exactly the same problem, mate. This film is something we can really relate to.

  • I know, I have a list of people that I consider more ugly then Quasi. If more people showed sincerety and compassion then they would reveal their true beauty.

  • Amen to that!

  • @orlandobabe Hope you will find love and acceptance someday.

  • This is the first time I have ever seen another version of this story other than the Disney Version, this was a good movie.

  • I know, I love this one and a couple of other versions of it.

  • Regardless of comparison to the book, Charles Laughton as Quasimodo was the most heart wrenching, realistic, portrayal that I could ever imagine. He WAS Quasimodo- not many actors are that good.

  • That was good thanks though she could have said thanks without being wheeled off haha!! i loved it though very hard not to empathise with these characters!

  • When quazzimotto says "why was I not made of stone like thee?" and then looks at the gargoyal is perhaps one of the sadest moments in movie history!!

  • thanks for posting up the video! i went to hollywood and blockbuster but they didn't have it and i was beginning to stress about it since it's on my final! thanks again!

  • Let's face it. The only "Beauty and the Beast" love story with a happy ending IS Beauty and the Beast. Hunchback, Phantom of the Opera, King Kong, Cyrano deBergerac etc. all have sad endings.

  • @33Keith33 Except that the beast became a prince at the end-so does that still count?

  • @StellianAriolus It should count because Beauty/Belle had feelings for the Beast before he turned into a prince. And unlike Quasimodo or the Phantom etc, he was not born a beast; he was transformed at a point and in the end he changed back into his human body.

  • Damn... why must poor quasimodo always endure such bad situations? whomever created the original story must've hated the poor guy.

That is what makes it real though. Tragedy is always the theme of a well written book.

    Too bad for quasi though.

Can't there be some kind of happy ending for christ sake! every time i watch "the Hunchback of Notre Dame" movies i always get depressed.

  • @bayareamilan Yep, Fleming had a knack for making him suffer, but at least he has a name unlike the monster/creature/thing from "Frankenstein" who suffers rejection and torment just as much, but doesn't even have a name!

  • at1:42 are the statues that where live on Disney!hehe! Lovethis movie a lot!!!

  • One of the best, if not the best (especially for the compassionate Quasi) . . .but honestly, the ending? . . c'mon, the book and the original ending was way better. . .

    however, that last line . . .tear-jerking

  • I admit that the main characters where alive but it still has a sad ending however that quasimodo still wont join because he cannot be part of the merry people give cheer to esmeralda

  • @warningfellow True. So it's not that much better than him dying.

  • "Why was I not made of stone like thee?"

    Always breaks my heart.

  • we are 2

  • Absolutely. Ever since I was a kid, this movie was worth watching just for the two scenes, the first being the swinging down on the rope to save her from being hanged and the second being the very last line.

  • Read the book, I tell you! It's better than any of the adaptations

  • @HugosNotreDame I read the book, ten times better! Very tragic yet very beautiful ending.

  • @HugosNotreDame

    true.

  • I love classic film and Hugo's story is beautiiful, but parts of this film made me laugh so hard. (i.e. Quasi trotting around large vat singing "Molten metaaaal!" and Frollo's cats and the spazzing characters - woohoo!) The scene between Esme and Quasi in the cathedral is my favorite! Thanks for posting!!

  • i'm glad that they had a happy ending than in the book has but i feel sorry for quasimodo!

  • I think it is quite possibly the only version where Phoebus dies.

  • A pretty good movie indeed, thank you for uploading. It showed lots of the ugly and stupid side of human kind, torture is really sad. My favorite character of this movie must have been Gringoire cause he's such a visionary. There are still lots of sorrow in this world such as ugliness of a face is still made a big deal, people should learn to love with their hearts not their eyes.

  • IMO Notre Dame de Paris begs for a mini TV series. A motion picture is just too short a medium - there are so much more in this book. And please let's just see the original ending for once, skeletons and all...

Have I said thanks for posting????Thank you again!

  • absoloutely brilliant - I just saw all 13 parts wow! I had forgotten how excellent this film is! one thing only: why was there no kiss between esmeralda and frollo, as the book says?...

thank you so much for posting.

  • since wen did did the book say they kissed? he tried kissin her all over

as rape but there was no "kiss between them"

  • Oh yes there was!Book7,end of Chapter8: F stabs Ph, Esme is terrified and she "....swooned, but at the moment ere her eyes closed and she lost all consciousness, she seemed to feel a fiery pressure on her lips, a kiss more searing than the brand of the torturer"-verbatim. It's not in the musical and no film has ever shown it(well,I don't know if it's in the '77 version),which is a damn shame...

  • it could be a metaphor

  • oo ii thot that kiss was from phoebus

  • same here

  • nvm the comment from oobellarogueoo ii just realized that oobellarogueoo is my other account ii forgot to delete lol

  • Oh come ON!!! Everyone's HAPPY except Quasi, and Esmeradla just ABANDONS him!?! Geez, that's not right at all. Even if you've gotta make it a happy ending, at LEAST give the TITLE CHARACTER some happiness!!

  • Yeah, I totally agree, I thought the same thing

  • They totally changed the ending!

Where's Victor HUgo's dark, sad story?

  • sents when does esmeralda like Gringoire

  • Great happy ending! I love it.

  • Why was I not made of stone like these?

  • "Don't thank me, thank Kasimoto, who fought like an effing badass with torches and molten lava and beams of steel, and Gringoire, who wrote a...pamphlet."

  • Hahaha how true :)

  • @jarvisel Oh yes, Gringoire did it the less dangerous and legal way and isn't a deformed hunchback so naturally deserves to be showered with praise.

  • @StellianAriolus better him than phoebus

  • Where's that good ol' Clopin scythe chopping action? I keep looking for it!

  • Ah and the all live haappily EVER AFTER! Esme dosent hang and leaves with her husband. One of the best versions exspect for the FACT gypies were darker (But I still LOVELOVELOVE) the actress who plays Esme. Oh well off to wacth the 60's version......CHERRIO!

    ~Twiggy_Jiggy

  • Oh I get it, this is the Happy Disney Version that has nothing to do with the Original Novel. How Clever, let's Rewrite Macbeth, Hamlet and Othelo too!

    Let's Disney-Fy the Whole World...Loving it.

  • Phoebus is dead, I'm happy about it. Never did like him, even in the Disney animation.

  • I've never seen this film in its entirety. But the fade-out (with Charles Laughton looking sadly down from the cathedral top) is gorgeous, not to mention the choral music.

  • huh? Esme lives? this is like the black n white version of the Disney flick, but Phoebus is dead. Ah well, I never liked him much anyway

  • Hmm... the soulution did seem simple.

  • This movie is pretty good, but the only thing I really hate is this end. First of all I've always liked Notre Dame story because it's dramatic, but this is..... even Disney's end it's better!!!

  • pls, don't get me wrong, this movie was beautyful. i liked it. the things i liked best are: Frollo's, Esme's, and grengoire's faces, quasy's performance. hey phoebus wasn't supposed to die, you know? the king, as a character! a very funny little old guy! and the goat! not to mention the splendid music!

  • kan't believe they put such an ending to the film. soooo far from the book! well i'm happy too that Esme survived, grengoire is kinda nice too. but the hole beauty of traGEDY IS GONE. and lines like the "king pardoned her!, the voice of the people demanding, freedom and human rights, off with the nobles!" forget it. way too simple. it's soo holywoodian! at least it's understandable for the Disney movie, cause it's for kids. (well i watched it at 24, and fell in love with it). but this!?

  • if you want a really, but really beautyful version, much more accurate i warmly recomend you the stage musical version. it's here on you tube. entirely. pls visit my account.

  • or you know what? better visit Marielyuy, she has them all in order. i really hope you'll like the show.

  • i like the books ending better. it seems more real.

  • how does the book end?

  • the book ends with esmerelda dead, by being hung by the law, i think Frollo died, and Quasi dies from grief and kills himself locking himself in Esmerelda's tomb from what i remember. not a happy ending. plus this ending is just pitiful.

  • yea that's pretty depressing. I understand why they changed it, but I still hate when they change movies that drastically from the book.

  • yea, it loses alot when they do that. plus it's not as realistic when Esmerelda's ppl are freed.

  • Well that's nice, she DOES end up with Gringoire.
