in the book she gets executed and then some years later they find his bones next to hers in the catacombs cause he committed suicide,,,,,,I can't remember an ending that just had me bawling like a baby....if you can handle the long books of Hugo then you should read this classic
You can see why he said it- once again he's all alone, and that's gotta hurt. Poor thing, he must have envied all those stone statues for not having to deal with all that.
However, I haven't still decided whether it is happy (because Esmeralda and Gringoire end up together and they are both decent nice people) or sad because they leave Quasi. Maybe they went back to visit him after???
Who am I kidding, it's sad isn't it? :( *hugs Quasi*
i know! im so confused. the first time it was he saving her and they live happily ever after, then i heard that the true story was they get executed. now it's this? sucks :(
The man who plays Clopin is the first man to obtain the BIG THREE AWARDS: Academy (for "Stagecoach"), Emmy, and Tony Award winner Thomas Mitchell, most notably remembered for playing Gerald O' Hara, the father of Scarlett O' Hara in "Gone with the Wind."
The man who plays Gringoire is Edmond O' Brien, who later won the Academy Award for "The Barefoot Contessa" and is well known for the film "DOA".
Wow, Esmeralda, that sure was nice of you to thank Quasimodo for everything he did for you... y'know, rescuing you when you were about to be hanged, and protecting you from Frollo and whatnot. OH WAIT. YOU DIDN'T. >:(
Oh well, at least Quasi lives in this version. Which is more than I can say for the book!
my only problem with the movie is that it ends so sad. it ends with him saying, "and know i have no friends" you can't get much more depressing. i hate that after all he quasimodo does for her, she just leaves him
I keep coming back to this adaptation as well; this was my third time watching it in a year, haha. It's hard to look at other versions when I enjoy this one so much.
The "Hallelujah" choir was later reused in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life," when George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) is brought back into the real world.
I'm glad they actually did something with Gringoire. I hate how movie versions just want to minimize his character or remove him altogether. He's my most favorite character from the book because there's a dorky charm to him.
this ending is a lot better than disney's ending. yes quasi and esmerelda survive, unlike in the book, but quasi never gets the friends and acceptance he deserves. a far more powerful statement on tolerance than disney's pampered 'everyone's happy' ending.
well you have to remember it's a disney movie the hidden meaning is still there but they had to sugar coat it for the kids. i think the meaning is still there it's just a little more watered down because it's for little kids
There is a lesser known version of the novel but it is the most faithful to it, with Anthony Hopkins as Quasimodo. It is the only version in which Esmeralda dies at the end.
The one version that Lordalessan speaks about with Anthony Hopkins as Quasimodo is the 1956 version, not the 1982 version. I agree with the comments of lordalessan that the 1956 version is the closest to the novel in which both Esmeralda and Quasimodo die at the end and with a powerful and masterful ending.
@HugosNotreDame how could they have an adaptation where she doens't die? that's kind of a major part of the story. it motivates the conclusion of the book with quasi holding her corpse until he dies.
I have always loved that line 'Why was I not made of stone like these?', that is why I am still single, too many people rely on physical appearances, they do not see past that.
I know, I have a list of people that I consider more ugly then Quasi. If more people showed sincerety and compassion then they would reveal their true beauty.
Regardless of comparison to the book, Charles Laughton as Quasimodo was the most heart wrenching, realistic, portrayal that I could ever imagine. He WAS Quasimodo- not many actors are that good.
That was good thanks though she could have said thanks without being wheeled off haha!! i loved it though very hard not to empathise with these characters!
thanks for posting up the video! i went to hollywood and blockbuster but they didn't have it and i was beginning to stress about it since it's on my final! thanks again!
Let's face it. The only "Beauty and the Beast" love story with a happy ending IS Beauty and the Beast. Hunchback, Phantom of the Opera, King Kong, Cyrano deBergerac etc. all have sad endings.
@StellianAriolus It should count because Beauty/Belle had feelings for the Beast before he turned into a prince. And unlike Quasimodo or the Phantom etc, he was not born a beast; he was transformed at a point and in the end he changed back into his human body.
@bayareamilan Yep, Fleming had a knack for making him suffer, but at least he has a name unlike the monster/creature/thing from "Frankenstein" who suffers rejection and torment just as much, but doesn't even have a name!
One of the best, if not the best (especially for the compassionate Quasi) . . .but honestly, the ending? . . c'mon, the book and the original ending was way better. . .
I admit that the main characters where alive but it still has a sad ending however that quasimodo still wont join because he cannot be part of the merry people give cheer to esmeralda
Absolutely. Ever since I was a kid, this movie was worth watching just for the two scenes, the first being the swinging down on the rope to save her from being hanged and the second being the very last line.
I love classic film and Hugo's story is beautiiful, but parts of this film made me laugh so hard. (i.e. Quasi trotting around large vat singing "Molten metaaaal!" and Frollo's cats and the spazzing characters - woohoo!) The scene between Esme and Quasi in the cathedral is my favorite! Thanks for posting!!
A pretty good movie indeed, thank you for uploading. It showed lots of the ugly and stupid side of human kind, torture is really sad. My favorite character of this movie must have been Gringoire cause he's such a visionary. There are still lots of sorrow in this world such as ugliness of a face is still made a big deal, people should learn to love with their hearts not their eyes.
IMO Notre Dame de Paris begs for a mini TV series. A motion picture is just too short a medium - there are so much more in this book. And please let's just see the original ending for once, skeletons and all...
Have I said thanks for posting????Thank you again!
absoloutely brilliant - I just saw all 13 parts wow! I had forgotten how excellent this film is! one thing only: why was there no kiss between esmeralda and frollo, as the book says?...
Oh yes there was!Book7,end of Chapter8: F stabs Ph, Esme is terrified and she "....swooned, but at the moment ere her eyes closed and she lost all consciousness, she seemed to feel a fiery pressure on her lips, a kiss more searing than the brand of the torturer"-verbatim. It's not in the musical and no film has ever shown it(well,I don't know if it's in the '77 version),which is a damn shame...
Oh come ON!!! Everyone's HAPPY except Quasi, and Esmeradla just ABANDONS him!?! Geez, that's not right at all. Even if you've gotta make it a happy ending, at LEAST give the TITLE CHARACTER some happiness!!
"Don't thank me, thank Kasimoto, who fought like an effing badass with torches and molten lava and beams of steel, and Gringoire, who wrote a...pamphlet."
Ah and the all live haappily EVER AFTER! Esme dosent hang and leaves with her husband. One of the best versions exspect for the FACT gypies were darker (But I still LOVELOVELOVE) the actress who plays Esme. Oh well off to wacth the 60's version......CHERRIO!
Oh I get it, this is the Happy Disney Version that has nothing to do with the Original Novel. How Clever, let's Rewrite Macbeth, Hamlet and Othelo too!
I've never seen this film in its entirety. But the fade-out (with Charles Laughton looking sadly down from the cathedral top) is gorgeous, not to mention the choral music.
This movie is pretty good, but the only thing I really hate is this end. First of all I've always liked Notre Dame story because it's dramatic, but this is..... even Disney's end it's better!!!
pls, don't get me wrong, this movie was beautyful. i liked it. the things i liked best are: Frollo's, Esme's, and grengoire's faces, quasy's performance. hey phoebus wasn't supposed to die, you know? the king, as a character! a very funny little old guy! and the goat! not to mention the splendid music!
kan't believe they put such an ending to the film. soooo far from the book! well i'm happy too that Esme survived, grengoire is kinda nice too. but the hole beauty of traGEDY IS GONE. and lines like the "king pardoned her!, the voice of the people demanding, freedom and human rights, off with the nobles!" forget it. way too simple. it's soo holywoodian! at least it's understandable for the Disney movie, cause it's for kids. (well i watched it at 24, and fell in love with it). but this!?
if you want a really, but really beautyful version, much more accurate i warmly recomend you the stage musical version. it's here on you tube. entirely. pls visit my account.
the book ends with esmerelda dead, by being hung by the law, i think Frollo died, and Quasi dies from grief and kills himself locking himself in Esmerelda's tomb from what i remember. not a happy ending. plus this ending is just pitiful.
Thanks for posting. Saw it on tv with my mom when I was a kid. I forgot alot of it and wanted to see if I still hate it. YEP.

kan't believe they put such an ending to the film. soooo far from the book! well i'm happy too that Esme survived, grengoire is kinda nice too. but the hole beauty of traGEDY IS GONE. and lines like the "king pardoned her!, the voice of the people demanding, freedom and human rights, off with the nobles!" forget it. way too simple. it's soo holywoodian! at least it's understandable for the Disney movie, cause it's for kids. (well i watched it at 24, and fell in love with it). but this!?

how does the book end?

the book ends with esmerelda dead, by being hung by the law, i think Frollo died, and Quasi dies from grief and kills himself locking himself in Esmerelda's tomb from what i remember. not a happy ending. plus this ending is just pitiful.

yea that's pretty depressing. I understand why they changed it, but I still hate when they change movies that drastically from the book.

yea, it loses alot when they do that. plus it's not as realistic when Esmerelda's ppl are freed.

Well that's nice, she DOES end up with Gringoire.
