  • Daniel, Like all your videos and music , but this cover of the Smiths is one of my favories. Like your music so much Im taking guitar lessons. Not bad for a old coot like myself who could only play music with a radio. Keep up the great work. Your music means alot to some folks.

I love ♥ this Song ♥ Thank You (good audio) and Good instrumental version.

  • How do you do the slide riff?

  • I'm sure Johnny Marr would approve. Kudos.

  • cant see the drum work... ???

  • yeah baby !!!! let's ROCK IT !!!! YEAHHHHHH !!!! AMAZING!! BOOSTING MOOD MUSIC!!!!!!

  • How do you get the "train" riff at 1:13?

  • "....just like anybode else does." -> NOT! This is so great.

  • Do you have tabs to this?

  • The phasing was awesome.

  • well you got my favorite part of this song just right, which is basically all the instruments with no voice... now if i could only get my hands on a studio quality version of this i'd be sooo happy

  • @srxshadow If you search for me on iTunes store you'll find a better quality stereo mix of this recording in my covers podcast.

  • talented bastard

  • I've waited 25 bloody years to find out how to get that sound. I owe you a pint.

  • amazing :)

  • Just watched in awe, nodding with a big smile on my face...that's the effect it had which must mean it was 'kin excellent.

  • Fucking great sound dude!

  • Although they were excellent, The Smiths weren't ONE Musician playing ALL parts - Bravo! Just Fantastic!

  • excellent work ! the captions made me laugh too, thanks.

bad posture and unsightly clutter ? how can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat ?

  • Damn, when he started playing the song, that guitar tone blew my brains, and now their coming out of my ears!

  • how do you get the sound of the passing car?

  • I'm in dubio.....would i rather listen to this, or the actual song?...Mmm...pondering, pondering...

  • Hey man, what notes are you play at 1:14? The pitch bending sound. I'd love to know the interval you're using to apply to a synth :)

  • genius !

  • Simply stunning mate

  • Huh.... just don't know what to say..... it's incredible.

  • Nice job getting that sound coming from a completely different direction.

Most would use a tremolo pedal but something is missing when you do that.

Your way contains what the tremolo effect somehow removes.

  • SWEET!! GOOD STUFF

  • This. Is. Epic.

  • I've watched this damn thing about 20 times and I'm even more impressed as the first time.

  • I think even Johhny would have re-learned some of his own work by this video. Cool mate

  • u nailed it bro!!!! big time!!!! awesome!!!

  • 41 people are totally deaf and probably, how we say in Italy ...RINCOGLIONITI like our prime minister berlusmerda!...Simply AWESOME PERFORMANCE.....Genius!

  • The text comments throughout the vid seal the deal, at the very worst you're clever, at best a budding genius. Keep playing, keep posting.

    (Cheers from Canada)

  • Dude, seriously, AMAZING! One of my all time favorite songs and you just made me love it even more. Ty

  • thumbs up if you couldnt help but sing the song... yeah man its that good

  • That's an ingenious way to do it, I must say!

  • 41 people don't what the hell they are talking about

  • Seriously....I don't even know what to say.

    You're in a band, right?

  • @haroof My band is called The Primrose League, two and a half albums so far. Most of the songs have videos on YouTube, and search on iTunes to find my podcasts that contain all the songs for completely free download, or Google for the Primrose League website (now available in iPhone-optimised version) where you can get the direct RSS feed and use any podcast reader to get the .mp3s.

  • @danielearwicker could you tell me what notes you play for the slidey bit that goes over the tremolo :) thanks

  • how much is a rickenbacker 330 12 new?

  • @brendonmilligan07 In the UK, around £1400.

  • AWESOME - great job!

  • absolutely beautifully brilliant ...J.M will be around to find out how to play this stuff as ive read and heared that even he finds it hard to recreate some of the Smiths songs,so watch out.....jokes aside i lived this stuff bro and you took me right back to those halcyon days.....

    play on..............................

  • oh sweet jesus the normal sound what a babe of a guitar!

  • Can you explain a little more on the scream effect? Did you record it, flip it backwards, listen to what it sounds like backwards and rerecord it, then flip it back around? Or did you just flip it backwards, apply the reverb and mix that down to a new sound block, then flip that whole new block around? Also, how did you get the cleaner tone. What equipment do you use?

  • damn! that was awesome! great job!

  • uhuh! backwards reverb is awesome!

  • Brilliant

  • DAMN!!! nicely done on the scream effect, that was beautifull!!

  • Awesome, but as a drummer I wish you could have added a little more up front punch and fat reverb to the snare. Other than that, I can watch this over and over. Very cool!

  • fucking hell this is genius! very nicely done you should be proud of yourself :)

  • So sick. Period. Of folks don't get it, then they just don't.

  • what's the point of a dislike button? what's there to dislike?

  • Spectacular job

  • I could never do this

  • Very nicely done. If only you could sing. ; )

  • Even he great Johnny Marr struggled to do this song live!

  • I'm trying to learn how to do that moaning sound of the guitar man its tough

  • THAT IS FUCKING AWESOME .

  • Fucking brilliant! Captured the sound as it was originally recorded. This is a first.

  • GOOD JOB MATE

  • Many Kudos for this. Loads of talent, with good explanation.

  • holy shit

  • Very, VERY well done!

  • Very good man awesome job

  • Big big fan of this. I saw the Smiths do How Soon Is Now live and it wasn't anything like as good as this version. Although I'm sure it was more to do with the hardware that was available at the time not being up to recreating it in a live setting.

    But good, very very good.

  • awesome guitar man

  • cheers man, been struggling with that one for hours, must have looked at a dozen shite tabs. sounds like about 6 guitars on the album, you cleared it up a treat! thanks again

  • dude you are the shit !!!!! love the way the guitar moans at the start

  • Well that I'm surprised to say - Was well wicked!!! Great chops, great song great band.

  • Great stuff love it!

  • Oh shit.. this is really good! :D

  • I believe the little psychedelic slide is a high F# and D on the 16th and 15th fret on the G and B strings and sliding down a half step to F and C# on the same strings with effects on the guitar ...It's sounds pretty close to me. What do I know? I'm using a Jangle Box and a Boss digital delay. I don't have tremelo on my amp.. I'm also playing it in F# without a capo.

  • How do you do the little slide?

  • not bad.

  • may i ask how did you learn this and could you post a tutorial or a link perhaps?

  • Daniel.....what notes/chords are you playing in the waaa slide? I'm trying to figure it out from the video, but can't quite make out what notes your fingers are on. I've tried to find tabs for it, but haven't found anything.. Oh yeah, awesome job! I've loved the Smiths since the '80s and your version of How Soon Is Now is fantastic.

  • Fantastic :)

  • This is just fucking awesome.

  • SICK! You're the bloody Man!! awesome job, dude.

  • pretty f'n cool man...

  • great cover man. i know the chords and stuff for the main vibrato riff, but how the hell do you play the string bend kind of thing (1:13) What effects do you use etc?

P.S: Your way of playing the main riff is really clever, but wouldn't it be easier to use a tremolo effect? Like the boss tremolo pedal?

  • @FretLegendSmithy

I don't know the chords it looks like it a standard open e for the opening . I'd like to know the effects.as well it sounds like a mix of flanger, virbratone, reverberation and compressor

  • @BDeiste Sorry about the opening chord, it sounds more like an f sharp chord with a hamering.

  • @BDeiste The chords (capo on second fret) are E, G, A. But the G and A are played like barre chords but with the top 2 strings (B and top E) played open.

But yeah, this effect sounds spot on.

  • @FretLegendSmithy

Thanks! As he usually does, guitar player Johnny Marr did an awesome rythm and texture work.

  • Good work ^^

  • cool guitar...I'm not worthy!! quite a collection of rickebackers, i think Noel gallagher has one just like that.

  • I first heard this about 3 years ago. I'm still awed by it.

  • youre sick

  • wonderful....1000

  • nice cover

  • Wicked cool cover my friend !!! Well done... Two thumbs up on this one !!! "Cheers Lad!" from across the pond...

  • yeah i agree. for having to go by ear on a classic song, that was really well done.

  • Wicked cool cover my friend !!! Well down... Two thumbs up on this one !!! "Cheers Lad!" from across the pond...

  • Wicked cool cover my friend !!! Well down... Two thumbs up on this one !!!

  • I favourited the shit out of this so hard!

  • cool...

  • This was not around at the time but you cloned it to perfection. Well Done

  • This is what i call DIY. You f*cking made it, congrats from Brazil!

  • absolutely fantastic!

  • You've done Morrissey proud. Absolutely! : )

  • niiiiiiiiice!!!

  • Really very good. Seems like quite an obvious approach now I've watched your video, but I wouldn't've thought of it.

  • awesome !!

  • Any bands playing with this sound today?

  • WOAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! You're AWESOME!

  • This is the best cover instrumental I've heard yet. You found a way to get close to the sounds Marr used in the studio. His was more tricks and tape edits but your way works well.

  • I'd so like it if you'd sing to it.

  • Again: I heard this now the 10th time - it's so great. Better than any other person could do.

  • BEAUTIFUL. 10000/10

  • Still the best ever cover version of How Soon Is Now. I am a big fan of all that you do, especially The Smiths' covers. Any more collaborations with 325C58? Bigmouth Strikes Again was most clever and entertaining and recommended to all. Best wishes for 2011.

  • Awesome use of effects and overdub

  • Sounds Ace......top notch work..........

  • very very good, mega top marks

  • I was looking for a good instrumental version of this song and that's the best that I found until now, but when I clicked on the link to download it I was taken to a page where I couldn't find this song... Could you help me? ^.^'

  • @FilipePhoenix - try searching iTunes store: daniel earwicker

  • @danielearwicker What are the tabs for the lead parts, the bends and all that? The rhythm I know. It would be nice if you could help, as there are no tabs out there as far as I could find.

  • I think I just got a boner.....

  • Best cover of this song. In fact, you're the only person that didn't butcher it to hell.

  • This song has always blown my mind. You have a very impressive ear for matching tones and different effects.

  • Crazy stuff man!!!

  • Tingle on my back - excellent!

  • great vid!!!!! I am just learning to play guitar and I can't play many songs but if I could just play this I would be happy

  • Nice. Jeez what a killer Ric.

  • This is great and I don't know why people are so sure this is NOT how he got that sound in the studio. I play this song live and just always used a very cool brown face showman and used the tremolo to get pretty close. I saw the Smiths way back when and I think Johnny did the same. BUT, this is actually a very different effect when you think about it and has a much better sound. Impossible to do live in a band setting but great in the studio. AWSOME>>>>>

  • sick

  • That was quite astonishing doing all of that haha. :D Love the Smiths and I most certainly love this song.

  • Brilliant! Great work, lads. Thanks for sharing. I know this is not at all how Johnny did it for the record, but who cares...

Now it's possible to recreate this great track live while getting the same sound.

  • this is fantastic!!!!

  • Quite fascinating...great job :)

  • This is one of the most amazing performances on YT. Great job.

  • And the video is pretty damn amazing too. Keep it up :)

  • @JaxMusicSupply They did this, taken from an interview in guitarist:

'relaying a Bo Diddley groove through four Fender Twins (he [Johnny] and producer John Porter controlled the tremolo speed on two each). All concerned were "stoned off our tits" apparently.'

That last bit wasn't really relevant but it made me chuckle. :L

I need to get me a Rickenbacker now... Anyone know where I can get a half decent copy? :)

  • Bravo, amazingly done. Love the reversed reverb effect. Great insight on how you did it. Thank you.

  • That was suprisingly entertaining

  • @spartacus6839 I must agree. It brought a smile to my face.

  • Great job! That has to be frustrating to get it all together. Love those Ricks!

  • That was rocking

  • Wow nice cover, I wasn't expecting this. I love your sound at 1:45 (the zzzzzzzzowwwwwwww thing).

  • awesome man, I'm jealous at your rickenbacker

  • What chords do you use on the screaming guitar?

  • thats crazy man you are good and inventive. keep it up .

  • excellent

  • I like this better than original!!! Great job!!!!

  • Nicely Done!

  • AGAIN PLEASE. BUT LONGER.

  • Nice!

  • Well, you can also achieve this effect with a tremolo pedal, or using a Fender style amplifier with a tremolo channel. Adding a little chorus can also have a nice flavour to it. Still, a really innovative way to achieve this sound!

  • first off, amazing job...sounds great! but i was also wondering if there is there any way that you can help me out with tabs or (preferably) sheet music for that little riff played during the chorus? it's such a simple little line but i have yet to figure it out...quite embarrassing actually. i'm in love with the 660 by the way, i live and die by PRS guitars, but nothing can touch the sound of a rickenbacker 12-string and damn, you get some amazing tone out of that thing.

  • Amazing!! I'm a Smiths fan but not really a music expert, but to me it sounds very much like the original (and that's meant to be a compliment)

  • this was verry cool. well done!

  • That was just awesome. It actually sounded even slighty better than the Smiths version. Well done.

  • @Gambit1984 how can it sound better? he's trying to imitate the original. surely the best he could do is get it perfect

  • @megahatespamtrol The guitars sound better than in the original recording. That's just my opinion though.

  • line 6 amp has this effect

  • Outstanding!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, that was wonderful.

  • Outstanding............well done.

  • Great, great video, man!! That is awesome! Way to replicate the sound! Simply amazing!!!

  • The day I can play that, i will pleasantly die.

  • You are really good. You know your stuff. Just thought I would pop by and say that. Great video.

  • You nailed it! I want to cover this myself, but I doubt I do nearly as good a job! What tuning is it?

  • I just simultaneously became a Smiths fan and a danielearwicker fan. Nice job!

  • Hell I like this better than the Smiths!!!!

  • Well certainly it's not how the original recording was made...did they make recordings on computers in bedrooms back then? !!!

This was fantastic and obviously a lot of work.

  • NICE

  • Well done, very interesting, love that reverse reverb bit.

  • the people who dislike this video may not like your trousers.but your playing is really amazing for them,i'm sure.

  • So glad I waited patiently for the payoff. The buildup probably makes the final playing even better. Great playing and the humor adds quite a bit, too!

  • It must be n amazing feeling knowing you're really nailed it like that!- this gets to me EVERY time and I'm only listening to it!

  • this is awesome, but the second 1/2 of the chorus the first chord is not C#m but a D

  • nice job, would I try the voice?? =D.

  • Great stuff! and spectacular talent!

  • amazing how much work went into this. WHAT a prodcuer the smiths had
