At about 3:35, the clump in the background, is that the remnants of a grandfather tree that the young ones came from. Is it a hemlock or maybe a spruce? I have spent the night sleeping in a homeade "sleep sac" made from a bed sheet with a sleeping bag fully under and one that I crawled into. It was very comfortable for me, however my taller cousin (75") was a little cramped in his which was the same size. Since, he has opted for a hammock with a rain fly. Seems to work. Thanks for posting.
Hey man, i dont really know the rules about camping out in areas in the UK as its very strict and would like to do my first camping trip using survival just using a knife and a steel cantine etc.
i really enjoyed watching this video, i found it so relaxing..i just wish i was brave enough to do this myself...i always think about a wild camp but never get to do it...thanks for the video :-)
I know how your feeling but the thought processes you need to put in place are that you are more likely to come to harm in our towns and cities. There is nothing to be afraid of in the great outdoors in the UK apart from bad weather and falling trees. Camping on private land is a thorny issue. Setup late and leave early. Leave no trace. Whose land is it anyway. Can anyone ever really own land?
Well done bro by not giving away your location, but next time make the campfire and then go round about 20 max 30 meters you cant see nothing no smells no smoke nothing i promise you a had the same fear as giving my location as well, but is dificult to located you by having a fire, more if you make a small fire and even the smoke is just not thick enough for people to see you at long distance only if are in an open area!! thanks Daniel (2morrow am going on a solo recon to the bush)
Sandy, I also noticed that you kept your food and things well away from your sleeping area. I know people are supposed to do that so as not to attract animals too close to you. Was your bike and backpack there also? No one was around in this video, but are you ever concerned with someone walking off with them? Just wondering. Thanks, Christine
I am always on my own when I go camping. My family aren't interested nor any friends so I go alone.I never feel afraid as I feel a part of nature and not alienated from it.I have always been an outdoors person.
There are no bears here!I had my cooking and food area away from the hammock in this camp because there was a nice clear area under the beech tree.Where my hammock was setup there were stinging nettles.
Hi Sandy, this hammock camping seems more practical and easier than tent camping. There is less to carry also. I have a 2-man tent. I was wondering, what do you do about rolling around in the night? Have you ever fallen out of your hammock (no disrespect). Also, sleeping bags can be difficult to get in and out of. How do you close the zipper on your sleeping back when you are rocking back and forth? I know these are silly questions, but they are sincere questions. Thanks, Christine
@WhiteTeaRoses315 Hi Christine. You must be staying up late to write these message's as it's 8 am uk time and message recieved 20 minutes ago!
Your questions are good.It would be easier for me to make a short video rather than explain. But I have the sleeping bag half unzipped and kind of sit in the hammock, put my legs in the half closed bag.Sit up and lift the bag over the rest of me!
I have not fallen out yet but have come close a few times! The hammock is comfy.I just fall asleep! No rolling

another good vid Sandy. as for camping the best quote i love is one by Nessmuk "i go to the wood not to rough it i do that in cities but to smooth it"
A cracking vid MrJack, More interetsing than Mr mears......your secret wood has changed a great deal since I was last there over 25 years ago,, You'll have to come to my secret wood, I've got permission for.... in Forest of Dean....
You are to some extent reponsible for the person I am today. As I grewup next to a real Huckleberry finn character called Chris in Watchfield all those years ago!
Ah,a night in the woods in the forest of dean sounds splendid.....When!
thanks for the heads up mate on your upcoming nite out. And by having legal permisson to be there you can arrive earlier and leave later if you want. You will also feel more comfortable, and the relaxation will allow you to enjoy the experience even more my friend.
this is a very good video about wild camping on too many levels to mention mate. Thanks for taking us along! :) You are an inspiration to us all. So nice to see a person doing the wild camping thing via the bicycle mode...very stealthy, healthy, and enjoyable, all at the same time. Keep the location secret to yourself with no hints to others that may not practice the same ethics or techniques as yourself and the "Secret Spots" will remain for you to use.
@BarefootsChild Thanks my friend.I really appreciate your supportive comments.I hope to be out again next weekend. This time I have legal permission to camp in some woods about 3 miles from my home! Will take the camcorder along and see if I can capture some more magic moments.
..when i was looking at the serene scene..i thought to myself 'my dog would start barking /growling if she heard a fox or a this and a that'.. though she is generally good and on the ball... is there any way to train a 4 year old dog to just hush abit..not likely.. ah well : / ive done my camping with and without dog (before i had a dog) and both have plus and minuss.
good luck with all your future peaceful camping out adventures.
great video! you're doing what I promised i would do at some point this year - discreete rough camping. I'm still trying to find a suitable location and waitint gfor the warmer night time weather. Been scouting out Savernake but not much luck at the moment. That wood you were at looks a bit like the woodland areas you get along the ridgeway - wayland smithy - uffington area.
@modernblacksmith Yes.The hammock is more comfortable but with all things there are plus and minus points. The minus point with hammocks is your hanging in cold air. Therefore some form of insulations between your back and the outside is needed.A sleeping bag is not enough as the insulation is compressed by your body weight!
I used a closed cell foam matt which was just about OK.There are other options.I'm still learning myself!
Wild camping illegal? I never thought about camping being illegal, please comment on how or where all the Brit bushcrafters film their vids. Thanks from USA.
@TheSepticYank Yes.it's true.In England your not allowed to camp just where you like. They don't mind so much in the national parks, but there is a good chance that if your discovered on private land you will be asked to leave. So I apply the wild campers rule to pitch late, leave early AND leave absolutely no trace I have been there!I think most Bushcrafters are breaking this rule.I think only the fortunate few have permission.
My part of the country too, thank you for sharing that, need to find some sheltered woodland for a bit of quiet wild camping. hreally hard to get away from folk nowadays.Even Savernake seems busy all the time lately.thanks again, very enjoyable vid :0)
@herne2001 As your probably aware.Wild camping is illegal in England. But that doesn't stop me!The greatest risk is from hunters not expecting anyone to be there and ricocheting bullets/pellets!Or a beligerent landowner. If they say leave, you HAVE to go!Before a trip I will recce a suitable area.Pitch late/leave early.Leave no trace.Savernake is very popular,so you will have to be descreet.Use green or cammo tarp.I will camp there sometime this year.
Putting up the hammock and tarp are real easy, but the hard work was getting there. It was a 11 mile cycle ride from my home to the woodland and mostly uphill!
I'd love to go camping but i'd be scared of some hillbilly/cannibal people in the woods :/ haha
