The massive decline and poor condition of Cuba is a direct result of 50 years of communism and the absolute control of The State over all assets including its people, which is regarded as nothing more than cattle.
Cubans are denied all freedoms and property, and imprison at the minimum signal or word of dissent.
For all u communist here i have to say that our problems in Cuba isn't about the U.S gov or about what they have done worldwide. we oesn't care about those fact. our problems are about CASTRO'S regimen.. even when you all picture the U.S gov as a diavolic empire,we understand that communist is worse than that..we deserve freedom and democracy like you.we cannot be the anti yankee symbol any more..
Important points. It serves the interests of the Cuban regime to rail against American transgressions. But these transgressions are not completely illusory.
I agree with you on some points, that the situation was ripe for Castro. The confiscation of private property and the abrogation of elections are definitely regrettable, along with the lack of freedoms. However the alliance with Russia was necessary with such a powerful, belligerent nation to the north. As for nuclear weapons, remember the US is the only country to have actually used such weaponry, and the target was 2 cities, not military targets. Think of that crime for a moment.
Go Cuba! no matter what stupid americans say about your revolution, you demonstrated to the world that dollars only fill the emptiness on their brains (and fills their fat asses too).
Lift the Embargo stupid american governors!! can't you see that you are the only tyrants in the world?!
wow,and cuba blames the economical block, now after that coment(they do bussiness with so many countrys, what block are they talking about, and like in any other pawer house, the stronger have more, and to be more powerfull, they enable there people giving then "home, educacion, etc.
There are only 2 things Communism and Communists are worth...the first is a blatant example of Geporge Orwell's 1984...and filling waste dumps. Communism sucks !
please dont be a flock of sheep what has the wise leaders of wall street done....STEAL.......!!!!!!!!! from you and me!!!!! now they want your tax money to cover their asses
This is bullshit propaganda of a failed 50 year totalitarian wreckolution. Truth is young Cubans want freedom and progress for their country. Democracy will eventually get to the malecon and there is no stoping that fact once the older generation dinosaurs die.
Amen Cubano! Well said! And God bless the good people of Cuba. I hope you're right about a democracy. I'd like to travel there someday to see it for myself.
50 years too long..the people of Cuba deserve to have freedoms and civil liberties many Americans take for granted. Castro has kept his firm grip on the island through repression.
It's really 'funny' and interesting that must of the comments in favor of Castro came from non-cuban citizens in the other hand comments against Castro came from cubans citizens. Please let cubans decide about our future. Please stop supporting what you don't know.
I'm with you ernestoniebla! But what else would you expect from a bunch of idiots on CBS news? They don't have to live in Cuba. The fact that anyone would compare the standard of living in Cuba to the U.S. is laughable.
@ernestoniebla YOU SAID IT, LET CUBANS DECIDE ABOUT THEIR FUTURE NOT YOU GUSANOS WHO FLED TO MIAMI YOU ARE NOT TRUE CUBANS THE MASS MAJORITY OF THE ONES ON THE ISLAND LOVE FIDEL AND WILL CONTINUE THE REVOLUTION
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The revolution "is" about transforming reality. Fidel has transformed Cuba into a horrible place to be. No freedom of speech, rights, food. You think these people being interviewed can actually say what they really think without being imprisoned? Brainwashed, communist, mouth pieces for an evil, soulless machine.
que se vayan pala pinga los castros y la revolucion cubana. and for all you fucking faggets that are saying that Cuba is the best third world country. Cuba shouldn't have ever been a third world country in the first place.
I'm a member of the Danish communist party (15 yrs is the minimum age of which to enter), i've read books on communism, Soviet agriculture reports, works by Castro, and will soon be buying some of Lenins. I think its safe to say that i know more about this than you, and that you hide your inability to discuss the subject behind your unjustified arrogance.
You might be older than me, but at heart, your no more than 10 since you use my age as an argument against me.
You said it, Gufberg. You've read books about it. You haven't experienced the reality of it, and are championing it's efforts from a cozy, Danish armchair . Who's arrogant now?
To see our Free American journalist, give a forum to the collaborators, and accomplices, of the Communist dictatorship, and repressive police state, that enslaves their own people.
And to see lies and disinformation, being spread around, with the help of fellow Americans..
To see them, taking sides with the forces of darkens, that jails and has kill thousands of people is a.. SURREAL and SAD cometary on humanity, and is like echo,. of those in the pass, that tried to cover up, Nazi crimes.
I am surprised by USA journalists that live comfortably in USA but do not understand the suffering of so many oppressed countries living under decadent political dictatorships that only bring misery, corruption, poverty and injustice.
Anyone that thinks living in Catro's Cuba is a good thing, has no clue of what you are talking about. I LIVED IN CUBA. that place is a shit-hole... AND FUCK CASTRO, he is not in power because of the people. We want him out!!!
I am surprised by USA journalists that live comfortably in USA but do not understand the suffering of so many oppressed countries living under decadent political dictatorships that only bring misery, corruption, poverty and injustice.
I am not sure if you are referring to the Castro government as being decadent...Certainly the Batista government maintained a decadent lifestyle (at the expense of the Cuban people)however, Fidel can not be accused of decadence.
Well, then you should see the mansions and complexes they live in and the Mercedes limos they use for transportation. If we compare that to 90% of the population's living conditions then it is very decadent. Also unjust and illegal but they have absolute power. Let's not forget that.
To all defending the Cuban Dictatorship: Why don't you move to my country and try to live like one of us? It is very easy to admire something you have not experienced. I was politically persecuted for my ideals, expelled from school, denied immigration permit so I became a rafter. 5 of my friends died in the scape. Cuba: 50 years with no elections, no human rights, no freedom and on top a destroyed economy. How can you defend this? Death to the Castros!!!!!!!!
As you live in Cuba, i respect your opinion (im pro castro and a communist). But would you rather live under a batista like regime?. Would you rather live in a USA like 'democracy', that supports terror all around the world, and leads a foreign policy that says "kill all socialist presidents"?.
That being said, if your so poor, and its all so horrible. How come you've got a computer?, how come your here right now instead of trying to make money, so you can feed your family?.
That's because cuban1959 escaped from Cuba in a rafter. You should know that Internet is prohibit for cubans. So you don't know exactly what are they thinking and they don't know exactly what's happening on the "exterior world" that being said, How come you support Cartro and communism?
Because communism has in the long run, been proved to work. (or socialism, as no real communist state have ever existed)
Places like the former Soviet union, Belarus (living standards have more than doubled since the communists took power), Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia etc.
Also i have friends who've been to Cuba, they met masses of Cubans who said they loved Castro. Even thou the economy went downhill after the fall of The Soviet Union. So i stick to what is true, communism.
and that's a big problem, in my opinion you can't love a president. Love in general makes you blind and as you said "Even thou the economy..." i would say even thou a lot of things. (let me tell you, the economy was down before the soviets and went down again after the soviets and also in my opinion was never really up) they could be blaming USA but on the other hand they could be lying because they are afraid (read "1984")
Socialist ideals do work but capitalist economics works also. Communism has been shown to be unattainable. Socialist ideas, like investing in education and healthcare and social services, is something that any capitalists should strive for because it increases the human capital of a country. The ideals of generalization, which communism champions, are flawed because of the principal of comparative advantage. Socialist republics do champion human capital but they lag behind in their utilization.
I think not, they have not flourished to their potential, like Japan, England, or Denmark, because of the heavy hand of the government. In recent months, Venezuela in particular, has been dealt a bad hand thanks to their overemphasis on oil production. Its bad economics. A centrally planned economy works, but a market economy is the most efficient system.
Yes in Denmark we have a VERY high standard of living, at the expense of the 3rd world.
I find it amusing how stupid you think i am, ofcourse i know that the basics of danish society is social democratic. Countries such as the scandinavian countries can be regarded as wellfare capitalist countries. While countries like China are state capitalist.
People who don't know basic economics, and I'm still learning economics, think things like free trade are just another mean of capitalist exploitation and that we live at the expense of the third world. In fact, they are a lifeline. For example, China. Chinese standard of living has grown since they began trading. Why, the principle of comparative advantage and an investment in capital, both physical and human. Countries that do not prosper are missing the latter.
I prefer calling it "traitors of society", but the essence is the same.
Why shouldn't i brand them this?, capitalist economics may not do as much damage as the CEO's, but most of them are supporters of the Bourgeoisie supremacy.
Not really, many economists are free-market socialists. We see that in today's world of locked land and capped populations, investing in the humanity is the right way to go. We champion equal education, healthcare, welfare and all those goodies that Europe has achieved and has prospered for it. If you think most economists want to exploit the third world, then why is Europe the US main trading partner? Again, comparative advantage.
Yes, but also many are not free market socialists. I
And yes, free market socialists fight for health care, equal education etc. But its at the expense of other less developed countries. They still let private coporations take the resources of other countries, preventing the countries development. Thats one of the main reasons that private business cannot be allowed. Its exploits, and will often do anything for profit.
The thing is, many countries have horrible leadership. Almost all of Latin America does. They do not spend their tax revenue from these businesses on improving their peoples ability to compete through education, healthcare, other social servies. Its not necessarily that only the corporations are greedy but the governments of those countries themselves are. Just look at China.
Business come to exploit cheap labor = more tax revenue = more human capital.
My last comment may seem like off topic, but my point is that such a society isn't utopia, it can exist, in fact, it have existed. And it does exist, in the form of prospering socialist nations.
And hopefully the Union will be back, a great many russians miss the old days where everyone had a job. And where the GDP was actually higher than it is today.
Russia's current government does not seem to be doing much to increase its human capital, just relying on the newly found oil reserves, which are becoming quite obsolete, to increase Putin's pay.
The difference between a welfare capitalist country and a state capitalist country, is that the former have a high standard of living, while the profits made by companies are relatively low.
Which logically work the opposite way in state capitalism.
You are right, a good society can be made by the means of a social democrat state, with more taxing on the rich, and less on the poor. However i don't think this is the ideal society.
For the record i don't hate capitalists, true i hate most of them. But not all.
I find men such as Run Paul very respectable, in that they wouldn't push their policies on foreign nations.
Exactly, they are not the ideal society but the most achievable one. Communism is a great idea but on paper. To achieve Communism, we cannot have scarcity, either of time or energy, otherwise, we will need trade and the most efficient way to do trade is comparative advantage and so on.
What many people apparently tend not to believe, is that the living standards of the Soviet Union was on a quite comfortable spot. Not under lenin or Stalin true, but in the 70's 80's and almost till the end of it The Union had a decent GDP.
This was achieved without exploiting the poor. Granted, such a society cannot reach the GDP of modern day europe, but it can certainly reach a comfortable level. Without us exploiting the poor, which i think is important.
Decent GDP, but not the best. Again, once an economy grows to large, central planers are going to have to cut back. Its growth that the Soviet Union was missing. It stagnated.
Again i prefer decent GDP, if that means we don't exploit poor people.
Or you think the wealth to have 2 cars, is more important than thousands of lives in the less developed world?.
The problem with the Soviet Union was (partly) that Kruschev and Brezhnev reformed parts of the soviet economic system. They decentralized some of it, which led to a decrease in production and output.
To continue, China has led all of these private businesses exploit their cheap labor. They have then gained huge amounts of tax revenue that they use to invest in their infrastructure and human capital. This increased the standard of living of the Chinese and created even more wealth for the country. They need to spend more improving their people to compete in the modern world. More scientists, economists ect.
The thing is, a centrally planned economy caps the ability of an economy and therefore its technology. Without the additional tax revenue, a government cannot take riskier projects as quick as other countries, and will be outcompeted.
I believe that capitalism and socialist ideas like the ones you mention can coexist within society. What is wrong is to give you free education loaded with doctrine or lies. Also is wrong to have universal health care and there are no medicines or a bed in hospital. Look on youtube for cuban hospital if you want to see the revolution achievements.
In the society i live in we are taught to buy, buy, buy, buy, buy and buy. People die from being too fat, we learn that material wealth equals happiness. That every war is just if its in the name of democracy.
And increasing number of people are getting tired of this.
And i think USSR had a good solution to this, they had 3 times of property, collective property, private property (illegal), and personal property (like your television, furniture, you name it).
You describe the capitalist society like extreme consumerism. That is indeed a trend for some. You do not have to join them, no one forces this to you. It is your choice to be slave of material possessions or not. I am not, I am free and happy here. I was never happy in Cuba.
I may that that in Cuba the sacrifice behavior is imposed by the Goverment. You can not have a material possession because all must have the same. This what they tell you to do but they do not practice. The Communists elite lives better than in the first world. With all kind of luxuries while the common Cuban has nothing to eat or wear. How about voluntary work? How do you like that concept?
I would not disagree with you that life is difficult in Cuba. But I think you are being disingenuous because you have to look at what was going on in Cuba under Batista and before. The US policy, was, as always, legal plunder of the resources at the detriment of the common person. Mortality, illiteracy, poverty, drugs, prostitution had already destroyed the country by 1959. Castro had only to pick up the pieces.
indoctus41: here you are correct, the right wing dictatorship of Batista created the perfect scenario for a character like Castro. The situation was ripe. in 59 some reforms had to take place like the campaign against illiteracy and other social inequalities. BUT stealing all private property, allying with the USSR, bringing nuclear, weapons, not having elections, no basic freedoms for 50 YEARS IS TOO MUCH. Cuba is worst know than in 59, that is a fact.
When you say worst, you have to identify WHOM you are talking about: Mafia bosses, oil executives, United Fruit Co, Batista and his minions? Yes of course life took a downturn for those of privilege. But you have to accept that after 60 years of US domination, there was no democracy in Cuba, because America's boy, Batista, killed it.
I didn't hear any detractors in Washington worried about the death of democracy under him, just as long as their UFC investments flourished.
The Soviet Union, which had a large labor force, lots of land, and invested in their capital, enjoyed prosperity until it became to0 huge. However, they could not keep up with the pace and that's why a centrally planned economy is inferior to a market oriented one - it is less efficient. Also, big government eventually turns tyrannical, which untimely hinders their growth That is why communism cannot work, because it hinders the growth of economics and ideas.
After Brezhnev things generally went wrong, Brezhnev wasn't very good with the agriculture of the Soviet Union (as oppossed to Krushchev, who was both economically firm, a true communist, and anti-stalinist). What went wrong was the inability of the leaders of the Unions final years.
You cannot claim that communism doesn't work, just because the Union dissolved. That'd be the same as saying capitalism doesn't work, because of the financial crisis.
Exactly, it went down because of government control of the economy. That goes also to the concept of big government, its the inefficiency and suppression of ideas that brought down the Soviet Union. True Communism is unattainable because its sullied by bad economics. We have a scarcity of both time and energy, we cannot be generalist and hope to have the standard of living that you so enjoy, or did you not think that Denmark had a market economy with socialist ideals.
Why don't we take the ex-soviets word for it instead?. In 1991 a nationwide poll in the USSR showed that 76% of the Soviet population wanted to maintain the USSR.
Then capitalist hypocrites may say whatever they like, the USSR had the support of its people. And thats basically all it needs, further arguments need not be made.
Anyways, the Soviet Union was still less efficient than most capitalist economies and it collapsed because of that, regardless of support. Today, centralized economies are still meager compared to market oriented ones. Why do you have such problems with capitalists? Capitalism is not a system of social ideas but an economic system. Economists really advocate what Socialism is saying, that is why Europe is so prosperous.
"President Gorbachev tried to gain popular support for the proposal. On March 17, 1991 a popular referendum was held in the nine republics (Russian SFSR, Ukrainian SSR, Byelorussian SSR, Kazakh SSR, Azerbaijan SSR, Uzbek SSR, Kyrgyz SSR, Turkmen SSR, and Tajik SSR) which participated in the drafting of the treaty. In the referendum 76% of voters supported maintaining the federal system of the Soviet Union, including a majority in all of the nine republics"
You must be insane if you believe Communism is good for the economy. Communist states usually say so. Why ? because they have to lie about it. They cook the facts and as they control everything and you can not go to any other source (opposition) to confront these #s. Have you lived in cuba like one of us? please tell me about your experiences living, working, raising your family in a Communist country.
Have YOU raised your family in a commuist country?, no. Because Cuba isn't communist and since you apparently hate communism, its weird you don't even know what it is.
A communist society is a stateless society.
Cuba is socialist.
And for the record i hope to see Cuba before El Présidente is gone, as he is a beacon of light to other socialists, and a symbol of incredible defiance to the US oppressors.
Well, I will rephrase. Have you raised your family in a socialist country with communist aspirations? No? Then you are talking about abstract opinions from books. Your idol Castro may be a beacon for confused idealists like you. You live in the 1st world, in democratic society. You need to experience it first before being solidly convinced as you seem to be. It would be like talking about a food without ever seen it in from of you. sure it looks delicious from pictures.
My grandfather owned a small general store in Chaparra, Oriente. There were no mobsters there. His father fought in the indepence war in 98. when that was was over he was given 100 pesos and a medal. He rented some land in Bariay key and started producing yucca / casabe. With a small boat and a horse he and my gradphather sold the produce. 20 years later he owned a small shop and some real state. Castro took it all in 67. He died soon after. See? No Mafia, No Don Corleone involved, just Castro.
About Chavez. He started as a coup detat leader against the democratic order. He did 2 years for that. Later was elected democratically. soon after allied with Castro as he needed a "beacon" like you do. Slowly he has represed the oposition: just one TV Chanel from them survives. He is looking to change the constitution so he can be re-elected for life. He just won that in a referendum. Conclusion: another dictatorship in the making. Venezuelans have steady left since he took power.
I live in the US. This is free country. I am cuban rafter and have been here for 10 years. I have my own business (a furniture store), the same way my grandfather had one until Castro took it with zero compensation. Yes, I would rather lived 8 years of right dictatorship with Batista than half a century with Castro. In cuba almost nobody has a computer, let alone internet. Why dont' you move to Cuba and try to live there like a normal cuban if you like it so much? Answer.
Your opinion as a cuban, matters greatly, and means much more than mine since you have lived there.
HOWEVER it seems the vast majority of cubans like the castro government, and their opinions, as socialists, matters (in my eyes) more than a capitalists opinion.
Batista was a peasant-oppressing fascist, his crimes against his own people are endless, and yet you'd rather live there. Would've served you right if you did.
The mayority of Cubans do not like Castro ( I lived there and before all my family). they are just afraid to say it. I do not blame them. If you dare (I did) you would be instantly separated from society. There would be a meeting in your neighborhood CDR and you would be expelled from your job, school (i was). Then you would only have 2 options. Stay there and probably go to prison or try to escape (I did). that is why Cubans are very discrete about Castro if they live in Cuba.
I do not like Batista or Castro, both dictators. I do agree that Cuba needed some changes in 59 like agrarian reform, literacy campaign, etc. Now, on top eliminating private property (foreign and cuban), taking absolute power of the press, government allying with the USSR and destroying all the democratic institutions and the economy was extreme. That is what they did. Oh, and to repeat these same policies for half a century? How can you defend this? would you like this in your country?
False dichodomy, Communism is good at that. It is either Batista or Castro. There is no middle ground. This is how you keep power, create fear with statements that break down to "We suck but we don't suck as bad as those other guys". Your kind better fear moderates like Obama who wants a soft landing for Cuba and will respond to your fear mongering.
lol. I love it when people hate on the revolution.... Have you ever gone to another third world country? probably not you ignoramus. You just want a McDonalds because your a cerebral insufficient.
Hey, I have been to other poor countries in the area like Guatemala, Dominican Rep. There are poor people there. The difference is that in Cuba you are poor and hostage of the government. As a poor member of society you should have the right to denounce the reason or cause of your situation. In Cuba you can not do that. The citizen is punished both ways. Lack of food and lack of rights / freedom. That is the difference.
Then maybe you should denounce the ridiculous embargo. You don't have the balls to stand up against imperialism. It is your selfish and irresponsible way of life that is DESTROYING OUR VERY PLANET. coward!
When cuba has free elections the embargo should be lifted. But not before. Remember why is there, ok. Cuba took all the US properties with zero compensation, allied with the USSR, brought nuclear weapons and exported guerrillas around the world. Most importantly they are dictatorship that oppresses it's people. Do they deserve the prize of lifting these sanctions. I do not think so. Please get informed before getting confrontational or calling me coward. Have you lived in Cuba?
Besides, where is the US embargo when Cuba deals with Spain, Canada, Japan? There is no embargo there. The problem is that the Communist have destroyed the economy. They also hate to pay their debs / we are #2 in debt default in the the world. Also US is Cuba's 5th trade partner. Cuba buys food from the US, rice , wheat etc. Did you know this? Again, get informed before making propaganda about this 50 year old dictatorship. If you like it so much move there and live like one of us cubans.
No miento.
If every country that seized US and foreign property was never allowed to normalize relations with the US then Poland, Honduras, and The Czech Republic would still be out. Instead we did what we could to support those working for democracy and support policies that worked and make change.
The US has never supported "those working for democracy". The US fell silent when Batista destroyed Cuban democracy. The US destroyed Chilean democracy and supported Pinochet. They destroyed Indonesian democracy by supporting Suharto's military coup over democratically elected Sukarno. The destroyed Arbenz in Guatemala to protect United Fruit Co.
It's hard to believe that your kind of delusional view of US pursuits still exists with so many examples to the contrary.
The US also helped take down Egyption democracy when it started supporting the USSR. When Iran elected a socialist president, the US staged a coup and installed The Shah, a fascist "god-like" monarch
That's right. Good points. The Shah and his evil secret police (SAVAK) were installed and supported by the US until the fundamentalist revolution took place.
US foreign policy seldom takes into account the possible negative aftermath of meddling in other countries affairs. John Stockwell, ex-CIA agent, has written a good book called "In Search of Enemies" which I'm sure you'd enjoy. He ran operations in Angola and Vietnam.
You got it wrong. The US put Fidel in power. The US placed the Batista government under an arms embargo that sent the signal that the US did not support Batista. The Cuban army stopped fighting. This was the end of the Batista regime.
You are mierdaaaaaa.... go to the dominican, go to haiti.... Cuba is the BEST third world country in the world!!!!! YOU ARE JUST VERY IGNORANT AND SELFISH.
The Cuban state is like an old car, it still runs but keeps spurtering while you drive it. Cuba can't put off reform forever in this era of Globalization and if it keeps putting it off then it could suffer a brain drain.
I agree when I was younger I lived in Puerto Rico for 2 years and it felt weird away from America I felt like in the middle of no were.
Now when I'm here and I travel Away from here I don't feel like coming back. Like Went I went to Miami from Chicago I came back home and quit my job went to Miami for 5 years..lalalalalala this is getting long ill stop here...
Why do you blame Cuba? Blame America for the embargo fuckin capitalist pigs

Well, then you should see the mansions and complexes they live in and the Mercedes limos they use for transportation. If we compare that to 90% of the population's living conditions then it is very decadent. Also unjust and illegal but they have absolute power. Let's not forget that.

ernestoniebla 3 years ago
Because communism has in the long run, been proved to work. (or socialism, as no real communist state have ever existed)
Places like the former Soviet union, Belarus (living standards have more than doubled since the communists took power), Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia etc.
Also i have friends who've been to Cuba, they met masses of Cubans who said they loved Castro. Even thou the economy went downhill after the fall of The Soviet Union. So i stick to what is true, communism.
Gufberg 3 years ago
and that's a big problem, in my opinion you can't love a president. Love in general makes you blind and as you said "Even thou the economy..." i would say even thou a lot of things. (let me tell you, the economy was down before the soviets and went down again after the soviets and also in my opinion was never really up) they could be blaming USA but on the other hand they could be lying because they are afraid (read "1984")
ernestoniebla 3 years ago
Socialist ideals do work but capitalist economics works also. Communism has been shown to be unattainable. Socialist ideas, like investing in education and healthcare and social services, is something that any capitalists should strive for because it increases the human capital of a country. The ideals of generalization, which communism champions, are flawed because of the principal of comparative advantage. Socialist republics do champion human capital but they lag behind in their utilization.
richi1173 3 years ago
I can think of both Belarus and Venezuela where this is not the case. The countries have flourished since Chavez and Lukashenko took power.
Gufberg 3 years ago
I think not, they have not flourished to their potential, like Japan, England, or Denmark, because of the heavy hand of the government. In recent months, Venezuela in particular, has been dealt a bad hand thanks to their overemphasis on oil production. Its bad economics. A centrally planned economy works, but a market economy is the most efficient system.
richi1173 3 years ago
Yes in Denmark we have a VERY high standard of living, at the expense of the 3rd world.
I find it amusing how stupid you think i am, ofcourse i know that the basics of danish society is social democratic. Countries such as the scandinavian countries can be regarded as wellfare capitalist countries. While countries like China are state capitalist.
Gufberg 3 years ago
People who don't know basic economics, and I'm still learning economics, think things like free trade are just another mean of capitalist exploitation and that we live at the expense of the third world. In fact, they are a lifeline. For example, China. Chinese standard of living has grown since they began trading. Why, the principle of comparative advantage and an investment in capital, both physical and human. Countries that do not prosper are missing the latter.
richi1173 3 years ago
I think the problem here is that your putting CEO's and economists in the same category under "Capitalist Pigs"
richi1173 3 years ago
I prefer calling it "traitors of society", but the essence is the same.
Why shouldn't i brand them this?, capitalist economics may not do as much damage as the CEO's, but most of them are supporters of the Bourgeoisie supremacy.
Gufberg 3 years ago
Not really, many economists are free-market socialists. We see that in today's world of locked land and capped populations, investing in the humanity is the right way to go. We champion equal education, healthcare, welfare and all those goodies that Europe has achieved and has prospered for it. If you think most economists want to exploit the third world, then why is Europe the US main trading partner? Again, comparative advantage.
richi1173 3 years ago
Yes, but also many are not free market socialists. I
And yes, free market socialists fight for health care, equal education etc. But its at the expense of other less developed countries. They still let private coporations take the resources of other countries, preventing the countries development. Thats one of the main reasons that private business cannot be allowed. Its exploits, and will often do anything for profit.
Gufberg 3 years ago
Didn't I address this point already?
The thing is, many countries have horrible leadership. Almost all of Latin America does. They do not spend their tax revenue from these businesses on improving their peoples ability to compete through education, healthcare, other social servies. Its not necessarily that only the corporations are greedy but the governments of those countries themselves are. Just look at China.
Business come to exploit cheap labor = more tax revenue = more human capital.
richi1173 3 years ago
My last comment may seem like off topic, but my point is that such a society isn't utopia, it can exist, in fact, it have existed. And it does exist, in the form of prospering socialist nations.
And hopefully the Union will be back, a great many russians miss the old days where everyone had a job. And where the GDP was actually higher than it is today.
Gufberg 3 years ago
Bad economics = bad country
Russia's current government does not seem to be doing much to increase its human capital, just relying on the newly found oil reserves, which are becoming quite obsolete, to increase Putin's pay.
richi1173 3 years ago
Well, lets think about this society. Okay, everyone grows and shares their own food and they give out their services for free.
This society has bad incentives for growth, and will ultimately stagnate and be out competed.
richi1173 3 years ago
The difference between a welfare capitalist country and a state capitalist country, is that the former have a high standard of living, while the profits made by companies are relatively low.
Which logically work the opposite way in state capitalism.
Gufberg 3 years ago
Why do you think many economists support taxing the rich?????
I would call myself a free-market socialist.
richi1173 3 years ago
You are right, a good society can be made by the means of a social democrat state, with more taxing on the rich, and less on the poor. However i don't think this is the ideal society.
For the record i don't hate capitalists, true i hate most of them. But not all.
I find men such as Run Paul very respectable, in that they wouldn't push their policies on foreign nations.
Gufberg 3 years ago
Exactly, they are not the ideal society but the most achievable one. Communism is a great idea but on paper. To achieve Communism, we cannot have scarcity, either of time or energy, otherwise, we will need trade and the most efficient way to do trade is comparative advantage and so on.
richi1173 3 years ago
What many people apparently tend not to believe, is that the living standards of the Soviet Union was on a quite comfortable spot. Not under lenin or Stalin true, but in the 70's 80's and almost till the end of it The Union had a decent GDP.
This was achieved without exploiting the poor. Granted, such a society cannot reach the GDP of modern day europe, but it can certainly reach a comfortable level. Without us exploiting the poor, which i think is important.
Gufberg 3 years ago
Decent GDP, but not the best. Again, once an economy grows to large, central planers are going to have to cut back. Its growth that the Soviet Union was missing. It stagnated.
richi1173 3 years ago
Again i prefer decent GDP, if that means we don't exploit poor people.
Or you think the wealth to have 2 cars, is more important than thousands of lives in the less developed world?.
The problem with the Soviet Union was (partly) that Kruschev and Brezhnev reformed parts of the soviet economic system. They decentralized some of it, which led to a decrease in production and output.
Gufberg 3 years ago
Exploitation just basically means slavery.
More scientists, economists ect.
richi1173 3 years ago
The thing is, a centrally planned economy caps the ability of an economy and therefore its technology. Without the additional tax revenue, a government cannot take riskier projects as quick as other countries, and will be outcompeted.
richi1173 3 years ago

Gufberg 2 years ago
You describe the capitalist society like extreme consumerism. That is indeed a trend for some. You do not have to join them, no one forces this to you. It is your choice to be slave of material possessions or not. I am not, I am free and happy here. I was never happy in Cuba.
cuban1959 2 years ago
I may that that in Cuba the sacrifice behavior is imposed by the Goverment. You can not have a material possession because all must have the same. This what they tell you to do but they do not practice. The Communists elite lives better than in the first world. With all kind of luxuries while the common Cuban has nothing to eat or wear. How about voluntary work? How do you like that concept?
cuban1959 2 years ago
cuban1959:
I would not disagree with you that life is difficult in Cuba. But I think you are being disingenuous because you have to look at what was going on in Cuba under Batista and before. The US policy, was, as always, legal plunder of the resources at the detriment of the common person. Mortality, illiteracy, poverty, drugs, prostitution had already destroyed the country by 1959. Castro had only to pick up the pieces.
Does that make Castro an angel? Of course not.
indoctus41 2 years ago
indoctus41: here you are correct, the right wing dictatorship of Batista created the perfect scenario for a character like Castro. Cuba is worst know than in 59, that is a fact.
cuban1959 2 years ago
cuban1959:
When you say worst, you have to identify WHOM you are talking about: Mafia bosses, oil executives, United Fruit Co, Batista and his minions? Yes of course life took a downturn for those of privilege. But you have to accept that after 60 years of US domination, there was no democracy in Cuba, because America's boy, Batista, killed it.
I didn't hear any detractors in Washington worried about the death of democracy under him, just as long as their UFC investments flourished.
indoctus41 2 years ago
The Soviet Union, which had a large labor force, lots of land, and invested in their capital, enjoyed prosperity until it became to0 huge. However, they could not keep up with the pace and that's why a centrally planned economy is inferior to a market oriented one - it is less efficient. Also, big government eventually turns tyrannical, which untimely hinders their growth That is why communism cannot work, because it hinders the growth of economics and ideas.
richi1173 3 years ago
After Brezhnev things generally went wrong, Brezhnev wasn't very good with the agriculture of the Soviet Union (as oppossed to Krushchev, who was both economically firm, a true communist, and anti-stalinist). What went wrong was the inability of the leaders of the Unions final years.
You cannot claim that communism doesn't work, just because the Union dissolved. That'd be the same as saying capitalism doesn't work, because of the financial crisis.
Gufberg 3 years ago
Exactly, it went down because of government control of the economy. That goes also to the concept of big government, its the inefficiency and suppression of ideas that brought down the Soviet Union. True Communism is unattainable because its sullied by bad economics. We have a scarcity of both time and energy, we cannot be generalist and hope to have the standard of living that you so enjoy, or did you not think that Denmark had a market economy with socialist ideals.
richi1173 3 years ago
Why don't we take the ex-soviets word for it instead?. In 1991 a nationwide poll in the USSR showed that 76% of the Soviet population wanted to maintain the USSR.
Then capitalist hypocrites may say whatever they like, the USSR had the support of its people. And thats basically all it needs, further arguments need not be made.
Gufberg 3 years ago
Send me the source.
Anyways, the Soviet Union was still less efficient than most capitalist economies and it collapsed because of that, regardless of support. Today, centralized economies are still meager compared to market oriented ones. Why do you have such problems with capitalists? Capitalism is not a system of social ideas but an economic system. Economists really advocate what Socialism is saying, that is why Europe is so prosperous.
richi1173 3 years ago

In the referendum 76% of voters supported maintaining the federal system of the Soviet Union, including a majority in all of the nine republics"

You must be insane if you believe Communism is good for the economy. Communist states usually say so. Why ? because they have to lie about it. They cook the facts and as they control everything and you can not go to any other source (opposition) to confront these #s. Have you lived in cuba like one of us? please tell me about your experiences living, working, raising your family in a Communist country.
cuban1959 2 years ago
Have YOU raised your family in a commuist country?, no. Because Cuba isn't communist and since you apparently hate communism, its weird you don't even know what it is.
A communist society is a stateless society.
Cuba is socialist.
And for the record i hope to see Cuba before El Présidente is gone, as he is a beacon of light to other socialists, and a symbol of incredible defiance to the US oppressors.
Gufberg 2 years ago
Well, I will rephrase. Have you raised your family in a socialist country with communist aspirations? No? Then you are talking about abstract opinions from books. Your idol Castro may be a beacon for confused idealists like you. You live in the 1st world, in democratic society. You need to experience it first before being solidly convinced as you seem to be. It would be like talking about a food without ever seen it in from of you. sure it looks delicious from pictures.

I respect a genuine hardworking cubans opinion on the cuban leadership, but i do not know wether you are such an individual or not, do i?.
If your father owned a shop as you mentioned, was it large?, did it do buisness with the mob? (the mob the US supported)
Also do you feel Hugo Chavez is a bad president too?, based on what you know about him ofcourse.
This may seem like off topic, but it is valuable information when considering the reliability of your opinion.
Gufberg 2 years ago
My grandfather owned a small general store in Chaparra, Oriente. There were no mobsters there. His father fought in the indepence war in 98. when that was was over he was given 100 pesos and a medal. He rented some land in Bariay key and started producing yucca / casabe. With a small boat and a horse he and my gradphather sold the produce. 20 years later he owned a small shop and some real state. Castro took it all in 67. He died soon after. See? No Mafia, No Don Corleone involved, just Castro.
cuban1959 2 years ago
About Chavez. He started as a coup detat leader against the democratic order. He did 2 years for that. Later was elected democratically. soon after allied with Castro as he needed a "beacon" like you do. Slowly he has represed the oposition: just one TV Chanel from them survives. He is looking to change the constitution so he can be re-elected for life. He just won that in a referendum. Conclusion: another dictatorship in the making. Venezuelans have steady left since he took power.
cuban1959 2 years ago
I live in the US. This is free country. I am cuban rafter and have been here for 10 years. I have my own business (a furniture store), the same way my grandfather had one until Castro took it with zero compensation. Yes, I would rather lived 8 years of right dictatorship with Batista than half a century with Castro. In cuba almost nobody has a computer, let alone internet. Why dont' you move to Cuba and try to live there like a normal cuban if you like it so much? Answer.
cuban1959 2 years ago
Your opinion as a cuban, matters greatly, and means much more than mine since you have lived there.
HOWEVER it seems the vast majority of cubans like the castro government, and their opinions, as socialists, matters (in my eyes) more than a capitalists opinion.
Batista was a peasant-oppressing fascist, his crimes against his own people are endless, and yet you'd rather live there. Would've served you right if you did.
Gufberg 2 years ago
The mayority of Cubans do not like Castro ( I lived there and before all my family). they are just afraid to say it. I do not blame them. If you dare (I did) you would be instantly separated from society. There would be a meeting in your neighborhood CDR and you would be expelled from your job, school (i was). Then you would only have 2 options. Stay there and probably go to prison or try to escape (I did). that is why Cubans are very discrete about Castro if they live in Cuba.
cuban1959 2 years ago
I do not like Batista or Castro, both dictators. I do agree that Cuba needed some changes in 59 like agrarian reform, literacy campaign, etc. Now, on top eliminating private property (foreign and cuban), taking absolute power of the press, government allying with the USSR and destroying all the democratic institutions and the economy was extreme. That is what they did. Oh, and to repeat these same policies for half a century? How can you defend this? would you like this in your country?
cuban1959 2 years ago
False dichodomy, Communism is good at that. It is either Batista or Castro. There is no middle ground. This is how you keep power, create fear with statements that break down to "We suck but we don't suck as bad as those other guys". That is the difference.
cuban1959 2 years ago
Then maybe you should denounce the ridiculous embargo. You don't have the balls to stand up against imperialism. It is your selfish and irresponsible way of life that is DESTROYING OUR VERY PLANET. coward!
roasted27 2 years ago
When cuba has free elections the embargo should be lifted. But not before. Remember why is there, ok. Cuba took all the US properties with zero compensation, allied with the USSR, brought nuclear weapons and exported guerrillas around the world. Most importantly they are dictatorship that oppresses it's people. Do they deserve the prize of lifting these sanctions. I do not think so. Please get informed before getting confrontational or calling me coward. Have you lived in Cuba?
cuban1959 2 years ago
Besides, where is the US embargo when Cuba deals with Spain, Canada, Japan? There is no embargo there. The problem is that the Communist have destroyed the economy. They also hate to pay their debs / we are #2 in debt default in the the world. Also US is Cuba's 5th trade partner. Cuba buys food from the US, rice , wheat etc. Did you know this? Again, get informed before making propaganda about this 50 year old dictatorship. If you like it so much move there and live like one of us cubans.

US foreign policy seldom takes into account the possible negative aftermath of meddling in other countries affairs. John Stockwell, ex-CIA agent, has written a good book called "In Search of Enemies" which I'm sure you'd enjoy. He ran operations in Angola and Vietnam.

I agree with you. US citizens are subjected to so much propaganda that even basic historical fact is seen as an evil socialist plot.
indoctus41 2 years ago
Indeed, even now profession of Communist or Socialist beliefs is seen as betrayal of the U.S.
At least I educated myself instead of eating from the spoon of American propaganda.

@indoctus41
You got it wrong. The US put Fidel in power. The US placed the Batista government under an arms embargo that sent the signal that the US did not support Batista. The Cuban army stopped fighting. This was the end of the Batista regime.

The Cuban state is like an old car, it still runs but keeps spurtering while you drive it. Cuba can't put off reform forever in this era of Globalization and if it keeps putting it off then it could suffer a brain drain.

Yeah, thanks for the respect.
but, I hope the Cubans you respect are the ones who risk their lives to get to Miami on boats, and not the "revolution" demons.

At this point the US needs to make a change and embrace the cuban goverment.
You cant not justify being in bed with all these crooked regimes in the Middle East and still hold a grudge against Cuba.
