Being a former security guard in bars and at large concerts and a current correctional officer I have been in my share of this stuff. My son is taught not to fight unless there is no other option. Northside is cheap team I played agaist them and all they done was push and trip everytime they were losing. Im on new waterford sharks and I played against this team all the parents yelled out was " Trip him, Slash him" and lots more stuff; when they did all this they ;lost all the time..

I have recorded every game my son played and I watched the over and over and never heard it , and another thing my son played PeeWee A last year and they won every game against New Waterford ...the only games we lost was against Glace Bay :)

I agree with some of what you say, but I think there is more pressure put on children now because parents believe their children have a greater chance of making it farther in hockey. They forget it is a game for fun. I agree it is everywhere and not in just in Cape Breton. The key focus that gets lost most of the time is to have fun, and it does not matter if you win or lose-this is the hardest thing for parents and children to understand. HAVE FUN. I thought hockey was to keep our children out of trouble and teach them respect for themselves and fellow players. From what I see there is very little respect being shown. Maybe this lack of respect is coming from the parents. From what I see in the rinks of Cape Breton; a few of the parents should be ashamed of themselves. Let the children enjoy the game! Stop living your lives through your children, and teach them to respect the game, the officials, the coaches and their opponents.

Yes, but first and foremost hockey is a game to be played for enjoyment and healthy competition. As our children go through the minor hockey system they will learn how to control their anger toward their competitor and play within the rules. The fighting, I'm assuming, comes from watching the big boys in the NHL and seeing how popular that is.
I like when our kids can leave the ice and have friendly relationships with the other kids from other towns. Afterall they are kids just like them and have parents just like they do.

@CanadianHockeyGuru It sounds like you do not have any children. Hockey fights are part of hockey and I enjoy them in the NHL, but not when it is children and a lot of the punches are cheap shots. Children should be taught RESPECT and I hope the coaches and parents take the time to teach their children this. Do the players get suspensions for fighting?
