I saw aerial video of the highways during the exodus before Katrina. I was ASTOUNDED to see that the outbound lanes were jammed, but the inbound lanes were clear.
Why in goddamn HELL weren't ALL lanes in ALL directions opened up for evac?
They talk about "personal responsibility".. what a sick joke. The evacuation plan for NO centered around the use of *private automobiles*, despite the fact that 150,000 people who lived in NO did not possess cars. Aid was turned back by FEMA repeatedly. This was a natural disaster turned act of state terrorism and mass murder, courtesy of the Dept. of Homeland "Security". The White House was fully aware what was going down re. the levees, even before the Dir. of the UL Hurricane Center did.
I am not sure why Spike Lee did not include this portion into the documentary. Mr Trotter, the gentleman in the video and former Meteorologist-in-Charge of the Slidell office, was a gladiator for the NWS New Orleans/Baton Rouge office. Ricks, the forecaster who wrote this statement, wrote another warning stating flooding of 3 to 8 feet for Orleans Parish Monday morning at 8:15 am CDT, August 29, 2005. You guys can do timeline math.
This warning was included in Spike Lee's "When The Levees Broke". I saw it the first time while watching that documentary. I live in the New Orleans area and although I had the TV on constantly the day before Katrina struck, I never heard this warning aired. If it was aired, I must have missed it.
I think it did air in the New Orleans area on local TV the afternoon & evening just before Katrina stuck. I did not see it though. I believe I was watching The Weather Channel mostly during that time rather than local TV. I rode out Katrina got stuck here for 3 days afterwards due to floodwaters. I finally got out the following Wednesday morning and headed West towards Texas where I had to remain for a month before I was able to return.
I live in southeastern Louisiana. So long as I live I will never forget those warnings. They certainly lit a fire under our feet, and saved thousands of lives.
Well, they have themselves to blame if they lived. I don't believe in "mandatory" evacuations...I believe in personal responsibility. If I were living in NOLA and I heard that warning, I'd be packing up and getting out pronto! Because it's the smart thing to do.
well smarty im nola and i remeber that day perfectly! some people did not have the money to evacuate! and your wonderful government knew this was hapening! we got the messsage about katrina two days before, understand traffic, gas?! and what about the people who didint have a car! or money or family to move! personaly responsiblity my ass! u shuda been here three years ago and lets see what you wuld have done!
I was in New Orleans when katrina hits. I live in kenner. I left when I heard about the hurricane (the massive evacuation day). I was lucky my home never flooded!

Hm that's odd Gary. We got it on the AP national wire as a bulletin even in CT. If someone dropped the ball and didn't air this, NOT GOOD!
