  • He just feels it, every single hit he plays, in the pocket, and its inspiring to watch because he is seems to enjoy every moment, even when playing by himself on a groove-based solo.

  • Those old 'Recording Custom' drums were awesome!

  • BORING DRUMMER

  • what a play... :D ...awesome

  • can't believe that some of these vids get thumbs down! wth? does it make the person feel like an authority figure or something, like he's someone with sophisticated taste who really knows music or something... lol... just don't get it.

  • @JakobsMovieTutorials

    cool story bro

  • WHERE IS THE REST OF IT ;( ?

  • My name is Kieran Erskine! :D woo!

  • Some actually use their ears

  • Some people listen with their eyes

  • 6 people wish they could establish a groove on the kit

  • its awesome

  • Peter is a good drummer.

  • and one more time:

The classic Yamaha 14x4 brass snare.

Also used by weckl, gadd, garibaldi, ?uestlove etc etc etc

  • wow... nice groove :-)

  • i feel like im walking through the streets of new orleans listening to their music when i hear this

  • Is it just me or does he sit really low?

  • @auburngoalie yeah, he does!

  • @auburngoalie He sit's really low. The theory is that it puts the player more behind the bass drum so as to facilitate more penetrating notes with less effort whilst simultaneously reducing unhealthy stress on the achilles tendon.

This is because the large, powerful muscle of the thigh is fully engaged for single power notes.

  • @kewlfonz Remember: Its called a kick drum. If you look at Erskine, he's not only sitting low, he's sitting far back. This mean, that he's almost got the posture of a karate front kick which is executed with the ball of the foot or Koshi. This allows him to get a lot of penetration relatively effortlessly if he needs it.

  • I'd sooner listen to this than Travis Barker playing super fast single stroke rolls all day long: That's boring. This drumming really has feeling and soul. Who gives a shit about who's got the fastest single stroke roll? Who cares?

What's gonna make the foxy chicks start wiggling their butts is GOOD DRUMMING. All depends whether you wanna impress boring drum nurds or get foxy chicks with great butts shaking 'em...

  • he looks like Bonzo! WTF

  • i'm trying to grow my moustache like his

  • Ron Jeremy kills on the drums.

  • those ghost notes toward the end there are sex to my ears lol

  • Establish that groove peter!

  • Comment removed

  • how cool was that huh?

  • @adzug Just about as cool as it gets...I'd much sooner see this than some boring drum nurd showing chops and flexing their macho egos...

Peter Erskine is confident of his own abilities: He doesn't have to do any of that macho "look how fast I can do a single stroke roll" bullshit. He can do that anyway. So what.

Here Peter Erskine gets in touch the slinky, sensuous side of drumming which is what's the coolest aspect of drumming.

  • @kewlfonz well u n i think alike. ive no prob with yungsters rockin out hard. its an expression of the energy at that age. but i thibnk this is much more intelligent and listenable. cheers

  • @kewlfonz u gotsa point. listen to pink floyd and its not like this guy, but their drummer just does simple things in a very effective way i.e. "echoes"

  • @27dedrummer His name is Nick Mason. and yes he's "simply" amazing.

  • @Racerdew lol

  • deff not a new orleans solo..smh

  • @2010jazzyman why not?

  • Maaaaan!!! I never get tired of this era in his playing. Erskoman walked such a cool line with this sound. Top half was a punchy, twangy, Dejohnette-ish/ECM contemporary sound, and the floor toms and bass drum had that deep, warm Gadd/GRP thing happening. I think it takes serious balls to pull this off the way he did. One in a million, Erskoman!

  • he looks like my principal. lol nonetheless, i love this guy!

  • Cleeeean sooound!

  • he blends the swing and the straight feel so well. amazing. peter is the man

  • THAT'S NOT AN AUTHENTIC N.O. SOLO!!!! WTF!!!!! Where's Terrance Higgans????!!!!!

  • haha is that kevin spacey speaking?

  • @paisteguy799

I looked through the comments frantically to find someone who thought that too! What the hell? He sounds EXACTLY like kevin spacey whoever it may be.

  • classic quartz grey awesome

  • Clean ... !

  • ahh the classic 80's quartz grey yamaha drumkit..or as it's usuually mistaken for, battleship grey..

  • @blica1... hey, those are Recording Customs, so careful which drums you make fun of! ;-) Seriously though, they never go out of style. Tons of players still use them, because they still (and will always) sound great. I heard a guy playing them at a beach hotel patio party the other day (outside and un-mic'd), and they sounded GREAT. I personally think they still LOOK good too... though you're right, the battleship gray is not the best color.

  • @scottp118 lol ! they had a set at my old university in the music dept. with an 18 kick 10 and 14 inch tom and piccolo snare..i gave them a whirl and they sounded like a little tank !..just beautiful !...i actually love that color..reminds me of the 80's and when i started really playing..great memories and fun !

  • I could listen to this all day.

  • Presenting Ron Jeremy on drums

  • Whoa, Peter Erskine with hair! and a 6 pc.! is this an alternate universe? lol

  • the genius behind erskine is his feel

the genius behind gadd is his studio capabilties

  • thats the fuckin stupidest thing I've ever heard a drummer say (assuming your actually a drummer) erskine is sick and so is gadd both legends

  • @rrdrums110 Can't understand why you're even comparing them both. They're two different drummers in style, and they're both great!

  • whats up with you and gadd!? post a video, i would like to see your playing

  • nope!!!!!!!!!! yamaha

  • that looks like Gretsch kit right?

  • no yamaha

  • the lugs give it away.. it' s a yamaha

  • I am in love with this..so sophisticated independence, beautiful overall sound and very relaxed..thumbs up..

  • ..that little lick at 0:50 is great. So simple - so beautiful..

  • Unfortunately YouTube sometimes has stupid comments made by stupid people such as rrdrums!:)

  • Comment removed

  • wow thats fucking ridiculous independence

  • The tom sound is unreal.

  • It is REALLY nice to see something cool like this played at a slow tempo that can be easily understood. Thx

  • I know what you mean but it really is new orleans ..its really a jazz / peter erskine take on a second line groove

  • what a sleezy feel .... unbelievable .. love it

  • its simply perfect

  • Oh. Peter Erskine is a genius.

Its dynamic, its melodic, its musical, its simple.

  • I'm sorry. No wait the hell Iam. Gadd grooves? Comopared to this guy? Not a fuckin chance. Now you want to check chop inventory while we're at it? how about drum sound tuning? If that isn't enough let's go over to a swinging erskine jazz channel and gadd can't even audition for old style jazz.

  • What planet is rrdrums on? Elsewhere he says he's played for 40 years, but Gadd slipped "under his radar" all that time. What he calls groove, he elsewhere says ALL pro drummers have. And he says Gadd can't groove? I have to conclude that he's a kid, a beginner posing as a player. If all seasoned drummers can groove, then he can too, right? So he should post a video. With so many people calling him on his stupidity, is it time for him to wonder "hmmmm... maybe there IS something I'm missing."?

  • rrdrums is from the planet fuckwad .... there is obviously something about Gadd he hates , I still do not know what it is , but so what , whatever it is , it is irrational .

  • Yeah...that's why he's played with Chick Corea...and who have you played with again?

  • holy sh*t he is good!!

  • beautiful

  • Grooving. Very nice.

  • Nice, Peter is one of the great ever but the numer one of New Orleans grooves is Stanton Moore .

  • Ye and also check Terence Higgins, New Orleans Monster Drummer!! He's crazy around the kit!!!

  • SWEET! Nothing grooves like Nawlins grooves!

  • That is one hell of a groove

  • Cool man; do you have some vids that are longer? I hear some Baby Dodds and Big Sid Catlett in here, along with some George Wettling.

  • family guy:D

  • He looks like an 80's porn star

  • hahahaha!

  • No! he looks like Super Mario!!

  • @MikeMoneyMiami jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja

  • yes ron jeremy !

  • @MikeMoneyMiami ron jeremy u mean? haha

  • @MikeMoneyMiami He is DrumStar

  • @MikeMoneyMiami He Sounds like one too.

  • Roffle Lol LMAO.

You sound like robots. Use words you idiots

  • 'i establish a groove on the kit' lol

  • @BrandynBoyles its ont he bass drum en it!

  • sweet.

  • ENGLISH por favor!!! This is the internet! Bashers take note - he's MAKING MUSIC!!!

  • barone erba sei una merda!

  • baronerba sei un idiota e non lo sai!!!

  • Erskine is the man!

  • Baronerba sei veramente un cretino. Potevi dire mille cose per esprimere le tue emozioni.Sei un poveretto gia' sconfitto.

  • what kit is that?

  • yamaha recording custom with a brass piccolo snare drum muffled . he now uses DW collectors series .

  • WOOOP woop DW

    11weeks to go

  • pig god!!!!!!!!

  • LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Incredible feel and precision..!

  • I really like that remote (Hat)

  • whats that ride? anyoneknow?

  • It's a k cymbal

  • very expressive with the ghost noteson the snare....excellent dynamics....one of my favourites

  • hahaha... i love your comment nulrob...yes it's true...a true master...the kit is a singing...it's yummy.....

  • feel and balance . a master . he is the true musical drummer .

  • That drag with his left hand, or what he describes as the "melody" is just absolutely delicious. Oh man. I need a shower after listening to that.

  • Peter explains one of the most important rule of drumming at about 25 seconds in. Nice groove too

  • his time feel is unmatched.. he sounds so clean and perfect, yet so human, it's almost unbelievable..

  • I remember when I was at a Stan Kenton concert and my Dad introducedx peter to Stan,

i also remember years later when he was sittinng next to me and Stan Kenton asked him to take Gary Hobbs place on drums he played maleguenuea or something then sat donwn back with us the audience was wakened by his mastery but I gotta tellya he stank like a dead pig. God bless him. my dad told me that he introduced Peter to Kenton which started his whole career, idunno.

  • Other Supreme Master

  • tomPKan your completely right, i feel stupid and i don't know why i wrote that a few months ago. it definitely swings and has that inspiration in it. i don't know how i thought that it wasnt

  • Sorry i stopped reading.

  • superb groove..

  • i dunno why this is new orleans solo, its a groovin solo to be sure, but theres not enough of that second line feel with the big four. not that im dissing pete, hes a g.

  • He just said it was inspired by new orleans music. I do get a kind of New Orleans feel to it. I've never seen or heard him play any second line/street beat stuff but I'm sure he's no Stanton Moore or Johnny Vidocovich (sp?)

  • peter erskine will leave spaces in his playing,if you listen you can feel it.

its what makes a good groove..if we continue regular playing (listening)hopefully well all "get it"

  • peter erskine....master of feel and groove,taste.

you need to get inside the heads of these type of drummers (musicians)look hard, try to feel what they feel ,then you'll understand.

  • Peter is complete.

  • Tiki Fullwood

  • to many masterful drummers to mention. Peter is one of the jazz greats

  • This is basicaly a Meters-beats ripoff lol

  • When I listen to every single drummer on Youtube, I keep coming to the same conclusion. Peter Erskine is the one with the ultimate groove and musical feel. Peter Erskine, Steve Gadd, Steve Smith and Dave Weckl are the elite.

  • How do you rate Omar Hakim?

  • Sorry, I forgot him.

Perhaps in the same breath we can mention a few more. How about Vinnie, Sonny Emory, William Kennedy, Dennis Chambers, etc...

  • Peter Erskine is a great player, one of my favorites. But if we're talking elite, then it's Tony Williams, Jack de Johnette, Roy Haynes and Al Foster. They set the standards, can't be touched and I'm not just talking straightahead playing but all types of musical idioms.

  • and who are you to say peter erskine is not elite. maybe he's no you favorite, but DAMN, he's elite.

  • Peter is one of my faves. I love his playing. Seen him live countless times w/Maynard to WR to Abercrombie's trio. I'm talking of the legacy of drummers who have invented the types of playing that Peter comes from n talks about. That's why Bird, Trane n Miles hired these cats. They trailblazed not just jazz drumming but all idioms of it. Ever hear Jack play second line, samba or calypso? Herbie n Sonny Rollins will tell you. Listen to the recordings. Peter's great but not in that tier.

  • This is simply false. Tony didn't play all types of musical idioms and neither did Haynes, Foster or DeJohnette. They're all great, great, great, all-time great drummers- but they are Jazz drummers. There are plenty of styles none of those guys have ever played or displayed mastery in.

  • I don't think you've realized Tony started the jazz-rock idiom w/Lifetime and played heavy rock-metal w/Alan Holdsworth and Ronnie Montrose later on. It's unfortunate people try and put labels and stylistic terms to great players when they cross over musical boundaries. Ever hear Al Foster play that funk groove w/Miles in "Your Under Arrest' n the funk grooves in On The Corner? You guys have short memories or simply label these great drummer as just jazz drummers. Sorry but you're mistaken.

  • I know about Lifetime and technically, John Mclaughlin deserves as much or more of the credit you're giving Tony anyway. Besides- that's still Jazz. And I have On The Corner! Find me recordings of Foster playing country, classical snare, East Indian Classical, Tumbao, etc. It's ignorant to claim these guys "mastered all styles". They didn't. They are master drummers, but no one has ever or will ever master every style of music. There are too many.

  • Idris Mohammed for New Orleans

Peter erskine just does a lame limp wristed version of groove, new Orleans i dont fukin think so.

  • He just said it was inspired by New Orleans music and if you actually listened, it does have a new orleans type feel to it.

  • is from a video of peter's master class.... this video is in emule program

  • this was one of the grooviest things I've ever heard. Big fan of Pete! Where's this from?
