He just feels it, every single hit he plays, in the pocket, and its inspiring to watch because he is seems to enjoy every moment, even when playing by himself on a groove-based solo.
can't believe that some of these vids get thumbs down! wth? does it make the person feel like an authority figure or something, like he's someone with sophisticated taste who really knows music or something... lol... just don't get it.
@auburngoalie He sit's really low. The theory is that it puts the player more behind the bass drum so as to facilitate more penetrating notes with less effort whilst simultaneously reducing unhealthy stress on the achilles tendon.
This is because the large, powerful muscle of the thigh is fully engaged for single power notes.
@kewlfonz Remember: Its called a kick drum. If you look at Erskine, he's not only sitting low, he's sitting far back. This mean, that he's almost got the posture of a karate front kick which is executed with the ball of the foot or Koshi. This allows him to get a lot of penetration relatively effortlessly if he needs it.
I'd sooner listen to this than Travis Barker playing super fast single stroke rolls all day long: That's boring. This drumming really has feeling and soul. Who gives a shit about who's got the fastest single stroke roll? Who cares?
What's gonna make the foxy chicks start wiggling their butts is GOOD DRUMMING. All depends whether you wanna impress boring drum nurds or get foxy chicks with great butts shaking 'em...
@adzug Just about as cool as it gets...I'd much sooner see this than some boring drum nurd showing chops and flexing their macho egos...
Peter Erskine is confident of his own abilities: He doesn't have to do any of that macho "look how fast I can do a single stroke roll" bullshit. He can do that anyway. So what.
Here Peter Erskine gets in touch the slinky, sensuous side of drumming which is what's the coolest aspect of drumming.
@kewlfonz well u n i think alike. ive no prob with yungsters rockin out hard. its an expression of the energy at that age. but i thibnk this is much more intelligent and listenable. cheers
@kewlfonz u gotsa point. listen to pink floyd and its not like this guy, but their drummer just does simple things in a very effective way i.e. "echoes"
Maaaaan!!! I never get tired of this era in his playing. Erskoman walked such a cool line with this sound. Top half was a punchy, twangy, Dejohnette-ish/ECM contemporary sound, and the floor toms and bass drum had that deep, warm Gadd/GRP thing happening. I think it takes serious balls to pull this off the way he did. One in a million, Erskoman!
@blica1... hey, those are Recording Customs, so careful which drums you make fun of! ;-) Seriously though, they never go out of style. Tons of players still use them, because they still (and will always) sound great. I heard a guy playing them at a beach hotel patio party the other day (outside and un-mic'd), and they sounded GREAT. I personally think they still LOOK good too... though you're right, the battleship gray is not the best color.
@scottp118 lol ! they had a set at my old university in the music dept. with an 18 kick 10 and 14 inch tom and piccolo snare..i gave them a whirl and they sounded like a little tank !..just beautiful !...i actually love that color..reminds me of the 80's and when i started really playing..great memories and fun !
Well this maybe one if the resons i don't care about Gadd. I never liked steely dan but i did always know who Peter erskine was and why. So whta. Erskine is a luckier break for me than if you just knew Gadd because I'm sure a whole lot of purists would agree that peter does everything better than Gadd. everything!!!
And w/ease to the point of making gadd absolutely uneccesary to me!!Also I agree w/ignaciomoran about Tony being a monster rock crusher. He makes gadd useless as well. ImO useless!!
I'm sorry. No wait the hell Iam. Gadd grooves? Comopared to this guy? Not a fuckin chance. Now you want to check chop inventory while we're at it? how about drum sound tuning? If that isn't enough let's go over to a swinging erskine jazz channel and gadd can't even audition for old style jazz.
What planet is rrdrums on? Elsewhere he says he's played for 40 years, but Gadd slipped "under his radar" all that time. What he calls groove, he elsewhere says ALL pro drummers have. And he says Gadd can't groove? I have to conclude that he's a kid, a beginner posing as a player. If all seasoned drummers can groove, then he can too, right? So he should post a video. With so many people calling him on his stupidity, is it time for him to wonder "hmmmm... maybe there IS something I'm missing."?
rrdrums is from the planet fuckwad .... there is obviously something about Gadd he hates , I still do not know what it is , but so what , whatever it is , it is irrational .
I remember when I was at a Stan Kenton concert and my Dad introducedx peter to Stan,

Peter is one of my faves. I love his playing. Seen him live countless times w/Maynard to WR to Abercrombie's trio. I'm talking of the legacy of drummers who have invented the types of playing that Peter comes from n talks about. That's why Bird, Trane n Miles hired these cats. They trailblazed not just jazz drumming but all idioms of it. Ever hear Jack play second line, samba or calypso? Herbie n Sonny Rollins will tell you. Listen to the recordings. Peter's great but not in that tier.
This is simply false. Tony didn't play all types of musical idioms and neither did Haynes, Foster or DeJohnette. They're all great, great, great, all-time great drummers- but they are Jazz drummers. There are plenty of styles none of those guys have ever played or displayed mastery in.
I don't think you've realized Tony started the jazz-rock idiom w/Lifetime and played heavy rock-metal w/Alan Holdsworth and Ronnie Montrose later on. It's unfortunate people try and put labels and stylistic terms to great players when they cross over musical boundaries. Ever hear Al Foster play that funk groove w/Miles in "Your Under Arrest' n the funk grooves in On The Corner? You guys have short memories or simply label these great drummer as just jazz drummers. Sorry but you're mistaken.
I know about Lifetime and technically, John Mclaughlin deserves as much or more of the credit you're giving Tony anyway. Besides- that's still Jazz. And I have On The Corner! Find me recordings of Foster playing country, classical snare, East Indian Classical, Tumbao, etc. It's ignorant to claim these guys "mastered all styles". They didn't. They are master drummers, but no one has ever or will ever master every style of music. There are too many.
He just feels it, every single hit he plays, in the pocket, and its inspiring to watch because he is seems to enjoy every moment, even when playing by himself on a groove-based solo.
