His most well known and famous album was "Keoluemkone" which include this "Thaidamlamphan" song. Sadly, i believe, he has passed away few years ago. By the way, i am born Lao. Asia after Kublai Kan chased us downward in 1200s, they lived in eastern part of Burma & have their own government. Beside Thai & Laos, this is one of our long-lost Tai brother strongholds. The original of this song belongs to k-Viset. The name of the song is called Tai dum lum phan. Mr. K Viset who originally sang this song is sill alive and he resides in the USA. Beautiful dance and wishing a long-lived Shan people.

JohnSecadisima! I like the idea, however that is highly unlikely. Consider these factors: Thai and Lao ethnics in Thailand can't even get along and are fighting for power. Secondly, Laos and Thailand are not exactly kind to each others until recently are warming up. Lastly, i haven't heard (at least not officially) that Laos especially Thailand which is considerably stronger militarily and richer economically lend a hand to the causes of Shan people. They at least should support Shan morally.
we do support but we can't support it too loud. Laos and Thais oversea we act as one ethnicity man, do new years together, laos open thai stores thais make laotian food at home etc etc. Its just the guys in Thailand and Laos that don't know how much we need each other until we are in another country.
I really want to visit Shan state too! But people are saying it's not safe right now in Burma. So, I'll visit Mae Hong Son(near Chiang Mai and it borders Shan state) in Thailand instead because there's a really big Shan community there! I'm currently learning Shan right now. Aside from Shan state, I also want to visit Pegu(known as Hongsavadee in Thai and Lao)

This song was 1st sung by the Ko Viseth in Laos back in 1960's. It was very popular in Laos and Thailand back then. It descibed the Lao ppl (Tai Dam) who escaped from Muong Lai/Muong Thaeng (which was part of Laos) where the French bataillon was stationed. When French lost their fortress to North Vietnam communist around 1950. The North Vietnam renamed this place as Dien Bien Fu. So it has been 15 years since the Tai Dam ppl leaft their home land then when this song was 1st sung by Ko Viseth.

Burmese language, there is just one, right? I mean Shan and other Burmese use the same writing and can understand the same script, right? I might try to learn some Burmese later on. Thanks in advance.
The Shan's and Burman's use different scripts but the Shan script is related to the Burman script so they look very similar. So, no they can not understand eachothers scripts. Even if they could read it, it would be jibberish if the reader didn't understand the language. An example would be us reading french. We could probably read it but not understand it. Even then English and French are related so some words we would get but Shan and Burman have no relation so it's unlikly that would work.

Sunrise3500, the compositor of the song is Mee-dam, a Lao. The song content is about the Tai-dam in N-Vietnam, and Laos flying from the communist control. The song is popularly sung in I-shan around 1974, the time when they crossed Mekong to Thailand.
Mee-dam got the lyrics "Taidum Lumpun" from a true Tai Poet whom use to lived in Ban Hong Sang, Vientian Laos and whom recently just pass away. My our Tai poet rest in peace with our Tean(tai god).

The song is "Tai(not thai) Dum Lum phun" the original singer is Viseth Vongsavanh and I believe it came out during the 50s. It's a national lao song and has been made into other languages since it came out. when it is sung in thai they use the same lyrics which is still lao. The song represents the black tai(where alot of laotian associate with) that dispersed throughout Laos, Thai,China, Burma, etc.
If you look at the outfit they are wearing and their style of dancing, it looks similar to the lao culture. Lum is also a lao word, both khmer and thai use the word rum. Although this is originally a lao song, I understand only 70% since they incorporated some Tai words. So the Tai(shan) and Thai version both use the same lyric of Lao this song is definitely a Lao original.

If you switch the first letter you can change between lao and thai; Lao:huk thai:ruk Lao and thai are able to understand each other for the most part but khmer is differnt we can't understand. well the song was made in thailand(issan) by a lao singer with a thai producer and co-writer. The song is def. a lao original. The song speaks of the Tai-dum who lost their land in Northern Vietnam where they originated. There are some still in Vietnam to this day, but a lot in Laos and a lot of Laotians are decendant of the Tai-dam. In this version they don't use Tai-dam, but just the word Tai.
Issan means northwest in Cambodian language before Thai invasion of the Khmer territory. Issan refers to Khmer Surin. There are high population of Cambodian living there. More than 60 percent of Khmer language is still spoken everyday, as well as Sisaket, Buriram, Chonburi,..etc. They speak Khmer at home, Thai outside. Awhile back they were not to speak their native tongue(Khmer). All Khmer in present day Thailand were forced to speak and learn Thai only.
Actually Issan is an Indian word, sanskrit. The king named the Land after he conquered the 16 states from Laos given by the French. It was to erase the Lao identity and make them Issan instead. Yes I know some people openly speak Khmer but in the Northeast they also speak Issan(lao), thai, and khmer. Funny, i was watching a short history of Thailand at Thai temple in GA and what i find was very interesting. The first lanuage pop out to be Khmer then years later Thai introduce their own version base off of the Khmer letter. This was documented on video. Wish i could get my hand on it.
The thai never arrived in the NE it is lao territory of Lan Xang since the 14th century and until it was given to thailand there was mainly lao descendant about 17-25million Laotians. Think about it there are only 5million Laotians in Laos. Compared to Thailand's 65million.

ThydaKhmer (which means adult girl of Khmer), Khmer language doesn't derive from Sanskrit nor Pali. I used to think like you too when I was young. Actually, Khmer has its own language but Sanskrit has influenced on Khmer through Brahmin religion and Pali influences Khmer through Buddhism. However, we can say that Khmer alphabets/scripts derived from Palava/Brahmin in present day India.
But basically it was the term for thaification(ridding) all things lao in the northeast. Every Lao and Thai historian knows this for a fact. Do me a favor and look up Issan first either by wikipedia or other online source before you post anything else.

I just googled and understand what you say but when the land was taken over the khmer people(most) were pushed down to where it is now so the Tai population grew over time. well the Lao version is saved to my favorite if you want to listen to it. it's not the original of this song but close.

Asia after Kublai Kan chased us downward in 1200s, they lived in eastern part of Burma & have their own government. Beside Thai & Laos, this is one of our long-lost Tai brother strongholds. The original of this song belongs to k-Viset. The name of the song is called Tai dum lum phan. Mr. K Viset who originally sang this song is sill alive and he resides in the USA. Beautiful dance and wishing a long-lived Shan people.

(kmers are ugly original SE asian race). Sadly, the kmers had been mixing with thai people to some extent that's why many of us have that ugly kmer look.

JohnSecadisima! I like the idea, however that is highly unlikely. Consider these factors: Thai and Lao ethnics in Thailand can't even get along and are fighting for power. Secondly, Laos and Thailand are not exactly kind to each others until recently are warming up. Lastly, i haven't heard (at least not officially) that Laos especially Thailand which is considerably stronger militarily and richer economically lend a hand to the causes of Shan people. They at least should support Shan morally.

we do support but we can't support it too loud. Laos and Thais oversea we act as one ethnicity man, do new years together, laos open thai stores thais make laotian food at home etc etc. Its just the guys in Thailand and Laos that don't know how much we need each other until we are in another country.

I really want to visit Shan state too! But people are saying it's not safe right now in Burma. So, I'll visit Mae Hong Son(near Chiang Mai and it borders Shan state) in Thailand instead because there's a really big Shan community there! I'm currently learning Shan right now. Aside from Shan state, I also want to visit Pegu(known as Hongsavadee in Thai and Lao)
Sipsongpanna sounds awesome too. So hopefully when I'm done with school, I'll visit Laos, Chiang Mai, and Sipsongpanna! :)

This song was 1st sung by the Ko Viseth in Laos back in 1960's. It was very popular in Laos and Thailand back then. It descibed the Lao ppl (Tai Dam) who escaped from Muong Lai/Muong Thaeng (which was part of Laos) where the French bataillon was stationed. When French lost their fortress to North Vietnam communist around 1950. The North Vietnam renamed this place as Dien Bien Fu. So it has been 15 years since the Tai Dam ppl leaft their home land then when this song was 1st sung by Ko Viseth.

The Shan's and Burman's use different scripts but the Shan script is related to the Burman script so they look very similar. So, no they can not understand eachothers scripts. Even if they could read it, it would be jibberish if the reader didn't understand the language. An example would be us reading french. We could probably read it but not understand it. Even then English and French are related so some words we would get but Shan and Burman have no relation so it's unlikly that would work.

No it didn't. If you truely studied history you would know their were four other kingdoms in that area: Pagan, Srijaya, Champa, and Dai Viet. Furthermore, none of these states were solid: they had no defined borders and regional rulers more often then not had different regional allience that they pay tribute to. Thai and Lao had thier own culture but assimulated Khmer, Mon, and Burmese culture when they migrated from southern china. Lastly YOU ARE A TROLL. And thats a fact.

Sunrise3500, the compositor of the song is Mee-dam, a Lao. The song content is about the Tai-dam in N-Vietnam, and Laos flying from the communist control. The song is popularly sung in I-shan around 1974, the time when they crossed Mekong to Thailand.

The song is "Tai(not thai) Dum Lum phun" the original singer is Viseth Vongsavanh and I believe it came out during the 50s. It's a national lao song and has been made into other languages since it came out. when it is sung in thai they use the same lyrics which is still lao. The song represents the black tai(where alot of laotian associate with) that dispersed throughout Laos, Thai,China, Burma, etc.

If you look at the outfit they are wearing and their style of dancing, it looks similar to the lao culture. Lum is also a lao word, both khmer and thai use the word rum. Although this is originally a lao song, I understand only 70% since they incorporated some Tai words. So the Tai(shan) and Thai version both use the same lyric of Lao this song is definitely a Lao original.

If you look at the ancient history, Burma used to be good friend of Cambodia, we shared border.The Chinese of Laos(lan chang) and Thai(Tai) refugees during the monglian war pushed downward to Khmer empire land. Thai was establised around 1350's. Our custom tradition, art, language, food, martial art was adopted and established in to Laos and Thai.Present day Thailand and Laos are incorporated with Cambodian culture and Chinese.

Actually Tai, is a broad description of the Lao, Tai, Tai-dam,Tai-Yai, Tai-Deang clan we are all similar in language and culture. Present day Thailand incorporated Khmer dance and art, to which influenced Lao.But Lao also spread its own influenced such as silk weaving, food, folkdance etc. We all influenced each other, but food and martial arts is different. Present day SE Asia is a mix of all countries not just khmer.

There are large population of Thai and Laos of Khmer dencent still living in Thai and Laos today. Since our language was adopted by the present day Laos and Thai, many Cambodian can almost understand them(laos&Thai)speaking.
Hsiao, 'Romm" is the Khmer word for dancing. Most Laos and Thai of Chinese decent cannot pronouncse 'R" instead they say 'Lum'

Yes there are Large amount of Khmer descendant in both Laos and Thailand but only in the Southeast(Surin thailand) and South of Laos nonethless there are more Laotians in Thailand than in Laos unlike in Cambodia. The Lao and Thai language is derived from the Tai language not khmer, and most likely Khmer words incorporated some words. Both Thai and Lao are tonal language Khmer is not meaning depending on the tones we used same words can mean different things.

Lao say Lum, Thais say Rum. The lao language does not pronouce R but L, but the thais pronouc R and not L. If you switch the first letter you can change between lao and thai; Lao:huk thai:ruk Lao and thai are able to understand each other for the most part but khmer is differnt we can't understand. If some khmer can it's good but honestly we can't. I'm from Thailand not Burma but this song I can understand because Tai is the principle behind lao and thai language.

well the song was made in thailand(issan) by a lao singer with a thai producer and co-writer. The song is def. a lao original. The song speaks of the Tai-dum who lost their land in Northern Vietnam where they originated. There are some still in Vietnam to this day, but a lot in Laos and a lot of Laotians are decendant of the Tai-dam. In this version they don't use Tai-dam, but just the word Tai.

Issan means northwest in Cambodian language before Thai invasion of the Khmer territory. Issan refers to Khmer Surin. There are high population of Cambodian living there. More than 60 percent of Khmer language is still spoken everyday, as well as Sisaket, Buriram, Chonburi,..etc. They speak Khmer at home, Thai outside. Awhile back they were not to speak their native tongue(Khmer). All Khmer in present day Thailand were forced to speak and learn Thai only.

Actually Issan is an Indian word, sanskrit. The king named the Land after he conquered the 16 states from Laos given by the French. It was to erase the Lao identity and make them Issan instead. Yes I know some people openly speak Khmer but in the Northeast they also speak Issan(lao), thai, and khmer. The majority however 17-18million speak Issan(lao) The khmer were not allowed to speak their language but at least they are able to call themselves khmer, Lao had to call themselves issan.

sure, sanskrit is the base of Khmer language but sanskrit is only used in the temple by monks. Issan IS a standard Khmer terminology NOT Thai. We have words to tell direction north, south east west (Peah'yub, ah'kne,naradei and ISSAN). Although we'lost our territory to Thai and Laod of chinese decent, our Khmer language should not be changed.

Well Issan means Northeast in Sanskrit(from India) and that's why it was given that name. It's not a thai word and I never said it was. To be specific the land that is in the NE was lao Lan Xang which was gained after Khmer decline and we are not of chinese descendant but Tai. Thus millions of Lao occupied the lands until 18th century when France gave it to Thailand.

You said "Issan(lao)," Issan is NOT a language(lao), Issan is KHMER word for location direction. And NOT sanskrit, it's a word we use daily. Sanskrit is not use anymore but only by monks. Thidakhmer or should I say princess khmer. The khmer king did help Fa Ngum by lending him soldiers and eventually establish Lan Xang in the 14th century. Lan Xang land was ruled by 3 different kings(3 different kingdom of Laos Kings)when he ruled he united the land under him, thus the old flag three headed elephant signified this. Later as Lan Xang expanded it included khmer land, thailand,vietnam etc.

Issan is sanskrit for northeast, it may be northwest in khmer but it's definitely a Sanskrit word for northeast. Khmer was established based on Hindu or Dravati which is from India thus the language had some Indian influences. Issan is used in Thailand as a term describing the land, the people, and the langauge. It would be difficult for you to understand if you don't speak thai or lao.

woah 60% now that's a wrong fact. If you have ever been in Thailand the descendant there are predominately Lao. it's more like 80% Lao and 20%others including khmer. I think you need to do some history check. You may think all you like about the word issan because clearly we have opposite views on the term but by thai and lao history it says it is from sanskrit not khmer.

Funny, i was watching a short history of Thailand at Thai temple in GA and what i find was very interesting. The first lanuage pop out to be Khmer then years later Thai introduce their own version base off of the Khmer letter. This was documented on video. Wish i could get my hand on it.

The thai never arrived in the NE it is lao territory of Lan Xang since the 14th century and until it was given to thailand there was mainly lao descendant about 17-25million Laotians. Think about it there are only 5million Laotians in Laos. Compared to Thailand's 65million.

ThydaKhmer (which means adult girl of Khmer), Khmer language doesn't derive from Sanskrit nor Pali. I used to think like you too when I was young. Actually, Khmer has its own language but Sanskrit has influenced on Khmer through Brahmin religion and Pali influences Khmer through Buddhism. However, we can say that Khmer alphabets/scripts derived from Palava/Brahmin in present day India.

ok, but like I mentioned before this is the same history I studied in Thailand and Laos. I haven't studied khmer history but it may contradict with ours. I just googled and understand what you say but when the land was taken over the khmer people(most) were pushed down to where it is now so the Tai population grew over time. well the Lao version is saved to my favorite if you want to listen to it. it's not the original of this song but close.

Isn't this originally Cambodian song? My mother said she listened this song when she was young.
I grew up with song this song for over 20 years now. I've always thought it's Cambodian.
