I think I read somewhere that JKR's American publishers, when "translating" her books suggested that they change "philosopher's" to "sorcerer's" because the legend of the philosopher's stone was not popular in the US and they wouldn't get the reference. They translated a lot of other things in the books into "American" English to be more accessible to the market across the pond. "Lifts" into elevators, "car park" into parking lot, that sort of thing.
