It might be the recording (placement of mikes, etc..), but Szeryng sounds way too loud compared to piano & cello, almost overpowering at times - "Listen! Listen to me!!..." ;-)
They say Kempff is a metronome and it's true that he brings a perfect sense of order to the work which only makes the feeling more palpable. This is really good.
don't you mean backhaus? about him bartok said this... but kempff? i couldn't imagine... he is actually known as one of the most poetic pianists ever...
1singlet. Kempff was probably the number one recording artist in the late 1960s. He did many records for DGG of mainly Beethoven - sonatas etc. Just after him, Barenboim and Askenasy were very popular recording artists.
@dhueso : Most musicians then (less today) spoke at least 3 or 4 languages - and were very knowledgeable about art, literature, etc.... not so much today. Today the sheer technical level is possibly even higher, but many young virtuosos lack the all-around culture these men possessed. I guess that's why there are so few truly strong and original musical personalities out there.
