  • I would love to have seen Bruce during this tour...

  • yeah that solo shows how good bruce is as a guitar player........great great so much passion

  • Um okay, I can die now

  • Amazing guitar solo, greetings from spain :)

  • Holy FK what a great song and live version - Thank you so much - Diz

  • I used to be unable to put this on my stereo without dancing to it.

  • That ending was brilliant!

I like it better than the album version.

I find that live versions of songs are generally much better than album versions.

  • Such a great underated song!! Love it <3 <3

  • One of my favourite Springsteen songs from probably my favourite Springsteen album

  • GUITAR SOLO :D

  • I´ve been at least in eigth concerts and I have to say that this guy is the best singer in the world, his concerts are amazing and my wife do think the same. Please, Bruce, live forever, your music is the leiv motive to go working each day and your energy is shared in each concert. Thanks a lot Bruce, you are my idol since I was 10 (and it´s not a joke). Thank you so much from Madrid - Spain. please come back again soon

  • I love the intro soooooooooooo much and for the passion. Bloody hell. He's probably the greatest performer who ever walked on this plannet and believe it or not, thats an understatment for what he acctually is. Hes a legend

  • The River and Jackson cage. two of the greatest boss songs. live versions. Puts every goddamn cell, into them songs and noone can top it. go bruce you the boss, dylan the prophet, tim buckley the universe and neil young the nature.

  • Absolutely fantastic, hoping he'll play this at Glastonbury providing he plays glastonbury obviously

  • He is doing Glastonbury, and I agree this song really rocks.

  • i really hope he plays this at glastonbury, i'm so fucking excited!

  • just tremendous

    thx for sharing!

  • Thank you sooooooooooo much for posting. I wore out the vinyl River. Great albumn, never got to see this concert, again, thanks. Bruce Rules!

  • One of my favorite songs on The River album. Just missed the Born to Run Tour but saw Bruce at the Garden in NYC in 78.I was 16. He left me speechless. I agree 78-81 was his peak. Born in the USA tour was so commercialized and calculated. Before that tour it was just raw to bone rock and roll. I still support Bruce and the band and miss Danny sitting in back of his organ. What can I say, that E Street bands wall of sound is like NYC, it's in my blood.

  • @ortleyman ...I agree The River is one hell of a mighty record, but Darkness on the Edge of the Town to me is his worst CD before 1990 in my opinion. Even now I don't think it's a very good record although I do enjoy some of the songs (I mean there really is no such thing as a bad Springsteen record), and "Racing in the Streets" is incredibly moving and one of his best songs.

The River, on the other hand, is his absolute peak next to Born to Run.

  • This is when Bruce was at his peak!

  • you could be right about that.

I think he finally learned how to sing " Badlands " too. That gave him trouble in '78...LOL...

Heard a recent live cut that was excellent

  • In my opinion Badlands was never sung or played better than it was at the Roxy in 78. So much power and energy. When he sings I don't give a damn and the "damn" extends into a screaming screech it's absolutely golden.

  • bad recording but good energy good singing good solo good everything else

  • hey i used to live in dc. Bruce did a great performance at Tyson's corner mall. He played for everyone in the food court. People were mad cause they wanted to eat their meal in peace. But I was listening. He had to leave when people started to throw food and drinks at him. That was the greatest day in my life

  • i have never heard that one before - the only thing i've ever heard like it was the thing that's on youtube of bruce playing an impromptu version of dancing in the dark with a street performer in copenhagen.

  • thats bullshit! for that to happen to any band is shit but to springsteen...assholes

  • R U SERISOU? WHAT YEAR WAS THAT?

  • Bruce was doing it for real then. Before he became America's big brother he was quite an intense fellow. I saw him in NY and Boston during this tour and he was fantastic. Music was performance driven then - now it is all smoke and mirrors.

    Love this song.

  • You think he's not doing it for real now? What does "real" mean? Bruce does it for Bruce - having fun performing. He still plays up to the crowd, goofs around, and can be serious; no different then back in the 80s, he's just ages 25 years. Maybe the biggest difference is technology; Bruce has used some of that to his advantage, but likes to steer away from things that will distort the songs quality and meaning.

  • The passion and energy of the 1978 tour was immense . Bruce was 29, broke, and fresh off three years of litigation. He stormed America with his new album and played like his life depended on it every night. Saw him in NY, Boston, and NJ that summer - the three best shows I ever saw.

Not knocking Bruce at all - have seen him many times since. He will never be less than great live.

However - I think Bruce does it more for the audience now and certain songs lose impact with age.

  • That could be true, but I still give him much credit for power sliding on his knees at 58 years old.

I think that it's great that Bruce can still produce great work as he gets older. I think that one of the reasons his newer stuff may not be considered "classic" right now is because, being 58, he has a family; Bruce cannot dedicate 18-hour days to the studio anymore, so the effort comes out on the road. Yeah, I suppose he does do a lot for the audience now, but he still entertained back then.

  • Very underrated Bruce song. And while Stevie Van Zandt has nothing close to a polished voice, his background vocal always seems to mix well with Bruce and the particular song.

  • they're like Keef and Ronnie. Best caterwaulers in the business. You wouldn't want it any other way. Unless you happen to be listening to the Beatles, of course. But even Lennon and McCartney had that offbeeat but splendid 3rd harmony with George that just makes it all the more poignant. Nuff Said! My fingers are getting tired of typing. Off to bed with me.

  • ooh, I love the solo, too!

  • I'm sorry the sound is bad on this :(

  • Nice energy in this version!

  • One of my fav Springsteen songs...

  • Just waiting to see some sun

Never knowing if that day will ever come

"Left alone standing out on the street

Till you become the hand that turns the key down in"...

Always loved this great song for the melody and Bruce's voice. This song makes my day each time I listen to it !

  • chills down my spine thank you...

  • I was lucky enough to be there! The trio of Across the borderline-Stolen Car-Wreck on the HIghway still shines.

  • Superb stuff.

  • OMG awesome.

  • Stunning performance of this awesome song.

Seen him doing it live in ´03, but this one is maybe the best one ever - great short solo.

  • The Jackson Cage. Jackson, NJ. Not far from Freehold.
