  • "Every day, every day, every day for the rest of your single life"! LOL :-)'

  • You suck. You suck. You suck. You suck. Suck. Suck. Suck. lol

Awesome video, thanks a lot for the practice session.

  • im going to do this every day for the rest of my life when i get out of school in a year or two

  • Pebber Brown and Justin Sandercoe for the win if you want to learn guitar.

  • This shit is hypnotic! I find if I stare at the screen saver on my laptop while I do this, there's a certain zen element to practice. Your fingers take over and your imagine drifts away....

Practicing these drills are the highlight of my day :-)

  • Good stuff.

  • Secret is the coffee =)

  • LOL!! After viewing a thousand videos on how to get good at the guitar I finally found someone who tells it like it is! You are a very, very good teacher and I'm sure that your students that listen to you are fantastic guitarists. Thank you for the all the info!!

  • Thank you very much for motivating me to focus on technique. By the way did you teach Buckethead these techniques when you taught him? Was there anything specific that you taught him? Again thanks a lot

  • @GuitaRockz1 Sure thing bub look around

  • Excellent! There are no easy tricks to get there. Hard work and no excuses.

  • hA HA HA HA YOU ARE MANIAC authentic ARTIST

  • Great vid!

  • Thanks Mr. Brown, you're a great teacher and motivator.

  • Yes BigBadWill Stetson rulez! Thank you. Robinson, whom Segovia call "one of the greatest guitarists of our times". Ric Cobo, a great player but a shitty teacher. Blanchard, who introduced me to the likes of Corea, Gambale etc. Rock ON.

  • @Paulandlesson...that was a loooonngggg reply. Haha. Good stuff. Stetson rulez!! UFC Drools.

  • Mr. Brown,

Wow that was quite a watch. You have

a massive following, and give them the

    non-bullshit truth. I can't tell you

how much you should be praised for

taking the time to present this in

real time. I could not find a part

two, but will be watching your videos

    with enjoyment. Kudos to you.

  • As a professional guitarist, and more to my strength a guitar professor, I wanted to, at the most humble level, share some things with you. These are concepts, discovered as most things in life, through self-exploration. Sure some were things I picked up from fellow professors, and other musicians, but in the end one has to grasp and except concepts. Music is a field ripe with that truth.
  • Your dedication to the instrument,

    understanding the time, effort,

sacrifice, and love to excel at it

makes you special. This is reflected

by the almost cult like following you

have. One can not say enough good

    things about that!

  • As a founding member of the Stetson

Guitar Quartet, I sat second chair

with a young man Andrew Linton on the

    first part. Although, my instructors

taught me many things I really learned

how to practice from him. Even though

I did not realize it until later in my

    career.

  • Practice makes perfect! How do you get to Carnegie Hall.... are still the most resonating statements in music. However, a more accurate way of saying this would be; "practice makes permanent". I address this because of your analogy of going from frozen to ice cold, which instills the need for repetition. Although a classical guitarist by profession, I am really a rock/fusion player by nature.
  • Whenever the SGQ was promoting a show,

we would always have Andrew, do the

radio spot for promotion of the event. The reason was because he could play

for example Carcassi #7 just about as

well as any guitarists in the world.

The amazing thing was that you could

listen to him play it after a day of

practicing, and then have him play it

when he first woke up and it was just

    as spot on.

  • This was all due to the way he practiced. When watching your video, you hit the nail on the head when you said "only play it as fast as you can accurately". However, after a few seconds you were going at a speed that was uneven tone and not as accurate as you had just played it. Why, because you left the speed at which you could play it perfectly. At that point what you are doing is practicing mistakes. Never go faster than you would want it to be on a cd.
  • The other thought I had was that you

keep re-enforcing the fact that we are

    doing "picking or right hand

    practice". Practice should never be

one faceted. While working the right

hand, you can also be practicing

    dynamics, left hand finger placement,

crescendos etc. This also serves to

keep a player disciplined, and only

    playing at that perfect pace.

  • As I said these are thoughts given with great humility and respect. I wanted to share them with you, as your charisma is bringing the masses to you.

I may just be another one of the "nitwits" and a dick. I hope you don't take that from this. I am now a big fan. All the best. P.N

  • I am gonna start watching this video everyday and try to keep up with the video and push even further. Hopefully by November I'll be suckish and not terrible.

  • hahaha this lesson is comedy gold, im a drummer and im practicing guitar aswell. Will do same thing (single strokes) for a good 10 mins after this. I cannot imagine my teacher saying the prep quotes XD "don't like it... don't complain to me you suck"

  • one thing you could focus on and thats pick types and sizes you use for the exercises. great work thx

  • @diveplane I purposely avoid that at all times. I dont discuss PICKS, STRINGS or AMPS at all. Everyone has their own opinions and I dont want to engage in any way shape or form whatsoever with any kind of discussion on any of that. Sorry.

  • @pebberbrown Thank you so so much for an HOUR of material! That's phat mate! I went from laughing at your attitude to being utterly awed. Thank you so much. I wished just at the beginning that you would talk about the right way to hold the pick and what could go wrong because I didn't want to perfect a bad habit, but there are tones of videos on that even possibly on your channel. I've downloaded this video. Just one question, I've seen quite a few articles that talk about a 3day routine unlike

  • @pebberbrown Agreed. Don't worry about what Pebber likes. Worry about what YOU like. Try different picks until you find one you like.

  • Comment removed

  • Hi, mr PB , i use alternate picking with my wrist, you are teaching to pick like your style, is it correct if i'll do exercises with my alternate picking technique picking by wrist? ( p.s. sorry for my poor english skills ) :)

  • same thing applies to acoustic guitar?

  • @iamgreyhound why wouldnt it

  • @pebberbrown Continuation im;oke what you said right at the beginning. Guess it's different schools of thought. Thanks again. Utterly inspired.

  • i was able to pick from the hogh e to the low e, but no, i was not able to pick the other way..... i HAVE TO practice

  • Hey Pebber thanks for the free lessons! I've been doing your daily practice routine for 3 weeks now not missing a day. I'm up to 8 mins scapel picking on each string and every day its increasing. Thanks again

  • Hi Pebber, thank you very much for these videos. Its really amazing you putting these on here for everyone to use.

One question though. How would you go about increasing your picking speed? I can pick 16th notes at 110bpm (I know "I suck"), but after that it just falls apart. This is just picking the open string all right hand. Any advise would be fantastic. Many thanks.

  • @ell46and2 keep picking 16th notes at 110 bpm for 2 more weeks then move it up 10 bpm every 2-3 weeks. There is no easy shortcut.

  • @pebberbrown ok Pebber will do. Thanks.

  • I'm up to thirteen minutes through the video and I'm just cracking up. This is a great entertaining workout haha

  • Pebber, all the practice is going well, down picking up from 110 bpm to 138 great. But when I leanr a song with a down/up/down strum, i start from scratch. Is this just interjecting a new pattern, which I accept. I thought the scalpel picking would have helped. So, every new pattern requires slow to a build up? correct? Thanks, you have been a great help

  • @gyrperegrine Every new pattern requires a slow build up - correct. Just perservere and stick to it for a long time thats the only real way to do it,

  • Pebber, I'm gonna follow all your lessons!

  • "get off the cellphone! stop texting your stupid buddies! what are you guys talking about anyway! anything important? i sincerely doubt it!!!"

    AMEN!

  • Oi Pete Ive been doing this since yesterday... 8 hours yesterday and around 12 today.. i still fucking suck and it feels even better than when i think im good !

    Thanks man.

  • That was terrible lol, not the exercise, but after 10 minutes my arm is starting to hurt...

  • Mr. Pebber Brown, You sir have spoken truth that is true for 90% of todays generation of kids. To master anything one must dedicate themselves to it completely. The world is so full of shit because no one wants to work hard for anything. Thank you for the lessons.

  • The secret is in the coffee...

  • Pebber, you're not instantly gratifying. That's a complement.

  • God bless you Pebber!

  • Mr. Brown thankyou so much for your lessons.

  • Tom Hess says that you should practice a lot of things at once, NOT perfect areas and move on, which is the opposite of what you teach. Both of you guys are great at what you do. Who is right?

  • @krelbar He must be because he has the gnarly goatee to prove it.

  • @pebberbrown

Hey, you've got him beat in the gnarly facial hair department, I must say...LOL

Seriously, though...when teachers give conflicting information like this, I guess the student's only option would be to pick which guitar player whose playing, technique and musicality he admires better and trust in him/her.

  • @krelbar I prefer not to choose "between" two concepts but to "include" both concepts in your own personal arsenal of ideas and techniques.

  • @pebberbrown I agree, but in this case you two are in total conflict...one says practice a lot at once, the other says practice one thing at a time then move on....its kind of tough to include both concepts when they are opposite one another.

  • @krelbar Well its like going to college. You can take 5 classes and spread your time out very thinly and really never get a good handle on any one subject or you can write ONE dissertation as an independent study and spend all your time doing ONE thing and completely master it get it down. Tom Hess doesnt have any really advanced students as testimonials and I do. Do whatever you want, but in the end think about how a Kung Fu master teaches his students. Tom Hess just collects money.

  • @krelbar iTZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sIMPLE ! jUST MAKE UP YOUR OWN DAM EXERCISE ITZZZZZZZZZZZZZ NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.

  • @krelbar guess it depends on your approach on life in general..

if you want to be good at everything or pick the areas in which you want to excel..

    As side thoughts.

Just remeber wet concrete tends to make a structure come down.

And there is no black and white, the periodic/gradual approach may be good for some situations,

the "all at once" approach may be better for others.

    have fun

  • this is the single greatest video ever made on youtube ever bar none

  • FEEL THE BURN!!!!

  • Also around 1:10 the vid cuts out and gets all shitty :(

  • You are my guitar Jesus.

  • Hi Pebber, Thank you for spending your time making these great videos. All the best Lee.

  • Ur straight up with it I respect that thanks pepper u know how to make some of the best guitar players

  • I am 47 years old and never picked up the guitar till now.Thank you Pebber for your invaluable lessons you put up for free for all of us.I don't know if I will ever be any good at this but at least everything I need is there for the taking thanks to you help.

  • Hhaha, i would love to be take lessons from you. I've received lessons from Jeff Frater, you might remember him from Kung fu san soo. He taught from alot of the guitar wisdom you gave him.

  • cheers pebber, thanks for the great lessons

  • Hey Pebber

Awesome stuff. I'm guitar teacher myself and I really appreciate your knowledge !

    Cheers

    Darius

  • Hi Pebber, just want to say a quick thanks for providing such a huge wealth of free information for us guitar players. You have helped me with my guitar play tremendously as I now know how to practice efficiently instead of wandering around aimlessly.

  • hey pebber,

great videos and lessons! A few quick questions: suppose I only have like two hours to practice some days, which modules would you say are the most important to tackle on those days where my practice time is limited? Or do you think it would be better to vary up the ones I do and don't do on those days? is it possible to do all the modules in a two hour session and still get the most out of each exercise?

    thanks,

    pvan

  • @42pvan Go to PLAYLISTS and Watch ALL the daily practice videos..Your answers are already all there if you take a look.

  • @pebberbrown Thank you! I did check them out--got the answers I needed. Man that ladder exercise with the first two fingers anchored is intense. Love it. Thanks again for the help.

  • That mug is huge.

  • Man... I just stumbled across your channel, and all I can say is thank you. You're an awesome player, teacher, and I dig the sarcasm (seriously). All I can ask is please keep the stuff coming, even though it will probably take me years to wade through what you already put up. I really do want to improve, I do practice a lot, and I think your stuff will help me keep the material consitent. Keep rocking, thanks again.

  • @SchonIsABeast Thanks a lot dude - rock on!

  • Your videos is the best thing on the internet! BUT I finally found something wrong in your videos: coffee, because coffee sucks against tea!! ;))

  • i like this

  • haha, what an attitude !!

thanks so much for this video, I can definitely see that this is what I need :)

  • "It's a PICKING EXERCISE!"

    XD

  • I've been doing this everyday since the video was uploaded for the full 1 hour 38 minutes and I can seriously see big improvements. Thank you very much for the video Pebber and I can't wait for the next installment.

  • i never payed decent attention to right hand, now i see that my picking skills are so lame, very effective lesson. Thanx from Russia, mr.Brown

  • where is part two?

  • @nat0000ham You can download the entire sheet off my website. It has it all on there. The videos are still being created.

  • this is epic

  • I am your newest disciple. This is awesome.

  • Its like those exercise movies you watch, only for guitar! I hope I can keep focused to do it everyday

  • Thanks for the lesson. I loved how you were like "fuck you you suck, go sell your guitar" It really motivated me.

but one question how is sitting down and jamming out with some songs not practice?

  • 5:22 it's like he's staring into my soul talking to the procrastinator me

  • Simply awesome. Thanks a lot. I'm arrived at the exercise at 0:27:00 and I'm having some difficulties: now I practised it for about 10 minutes, but after I bit I loose the rhythm and I play it wrong. Can you give me any suggestion please?

  • @marius994 10 minutes! HAH! Do it for a year dude.

  • @pebberbrown Ok, now i got it, thanks. :D Nah I just expected to be able to learn it quickly since it looked like a simple exercise. Thanks again.

  • @pebberbrown i cant believe that comment.. sometimes i think, that these guys dont understand one word you say.. 10 minutes. :-D by the way: the x-pattern remindes me of a 6/8 king crimson song.. :)

  • Amazing video pebber :) , going to watch the rest of it when i get back from archery, got linked to it about an hour before :(

  • Man, you must be great at playing SLAYER!!

  • WHAT SHOULD I PRACTICE

    just kidding

  • @merlinchanelle Thanks for the compliment! Yeah FRANCE!

  • this totally blowed my mind. ive never played a guitar, can i use that to start with it anyway? i have no idea of notes and that stuff 3:

  • @111111222223 you could but id learn a few chords first and get a hang of actually fretting the strings correctly and get used to picking. also learn the major scale everywhere. this is actually slightly advanced for people who've never played the instrument

  • @rickyjshiznit okay thanks for your reply :D

  • wow how long did it take you to upload this?

  • Now thats dedication and greatness, you sit down and record yourself for over an hour so strangers can learn something .........

Seriously : Thanks a lot PB.

  • you are the best fucking teacher ever, Fucking ever, Rock on

  • wow, thanks Mr. Brown for your time to teach us noobs and broke folks how to play.

  • Comment removed

  • great video!! it really helped me already after a few days! now i just have to stick to it.

but is there a way to get all of the modules? like as a document for printing out?

  • I luv it , tell it like it is, Pebber! :) Everyone wants instant gratification nowadays.

  • @smkonwater23 Only those who can get past the instant gratification mindset will ever amount to anything. Getting good at something requires a level of dedication that most do not posess even though almost everyone on here thinks they do.

This is why I post the videos in long format now - the losers cant even follow allong for more than a few minutes and the winners watch them to the end. Seems to weed out most of the knuckleheads right away.

  • Dude, this is awesome. It's like a more intense version of Frank Gambale's Chop Builder.

Are you gonna do the other modules? It would be greatly appreciated I'm sure.

  • I never played guitar before, but I am going to start learning how. I DO NOT WANT TO BE A SUCKY RETARD!

  • @19NICOLE78 if u start guitar now and found the most amazing teacher on YouTube ....then dont be afraid!!!! Most people get started with the retarded expert village....same here xD but when i found Pebber around 2 years ago i really burn my life in practicing in 8-12 hours a day!!! ..................And no im not a commercial xDD Good luck dude!

  • @19NICOLE78 come back in 4 years see if you still suk?

  • I drive my mother and brother crazy doing this exercise. I stick with it, though. I always watch this video when I do it, but I dunno whether that's good or bad. It makes it more tolerable to feel like I'm sitting down and doing this with PB, and the idle talk helps me relax.

  • "These exercises", I should say. It's the "picking one string for X number of minutes" one that drives my family crazy, so I had it on the mind, hehe.

  • @devilmaylol You can wrap a sock around the neck an no one will hear it at all and you will still feel the string with the same tension so you can do the exercises while family members want to watch TV etc. Try it!

  • @pebberbrown I usually just tell them to bugger off in so many words, but I could stand to be nicer and try this, haha. Thanks, PB.

  • @pebberbrown Haha, I do that all the time! I love it!

  • @devilmaylol hahah i love the ranting, it encourages me :)

  • @devilmaylol 11 months ago you posted this comment lol how good are you now?

  • this dude is mad funny.

i love this video so brutally honest.

  • thanks so much for breaking it down for us dummies! looking foward to part 2. we suck! were not worthy! thanks again Mr. Brown.

  • thanks so much for breaking it down for us dummies!!! cant wait for part 2. we suck! were not worthy! thanks again Mr. Brown.

  • Hi Pebber,

I hope you are having a nice day. I am on day 2 of this, and it occurs to me that this particular module doesn't use a metronome. Is that by design, or do you sometimes use a metronome and sometimes not? I noticed that it is easier to focus on the actual mechanics of the right-hand when not using a metronome. Thx again for the vid.

BTW, I was using the coffee-cup method exactly as prescribed, and found it to be extremely effective!

  • pebebr fantastic video!! been waiting for something like this for a long time, fuck the trolls man.

  • @cucuta95 Now THATS a slogan for a new T-SHIRT!

  • @cucuta95 haha, the line is yours man, make the t shirts, i'd buy one.

  • thank you very much for this. i'm gonna practice i swear. no more fuckin youtube while practicing

  • Pebber you have official created the greatest guitar video on youtube, forget that Canon Rock kid, this is the real deal

  • You lost soooooo many possible students with this video.

  • @CardPiranha Yeah why do you say that

  • @pebberbrown

because CardPiranha is yet another wise-ass

  • @pebberbrown because few people give enough of a shit to sit down and actually practice picking for an hour.

  • @StigandStigmatic

Your a fucking retard....come over to my site fucker.....lets see how good you are?

  • Your a true master at the guitar, screw the trolls you are amazing

  • I like this...lessons that don't hold your hand for you and skip the feel-good bullshit. Just hard hitting truth and advice. Thank you pebber!

  • Whoa... how did you get around the 10 minute limit? Or maybe there isn't one?

  • @TheBadSpoon I was offered a special account on You Tube due to the nature of my videos.

  • OH WOW!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH, PEBBER!!

  • Thatnk you for proving the theory I have already had in my mind.

    I suck.

    THANKS PEBBER!!!

Now im gonna work hard and hopefully not suck

  • This is some sweet no bullshit teaching. Anybody who bitches has never had to work hard for a thing in their lives, has no passion, and has no focus (and has never had someone do them the _favor_ of kicking their asses into shape). Thank you Mr. Brown. Thank you very much.

  • This IS the best lesson on youtube! Thanks for taking the time to do this Pebber! I finally have a set lesson plan to practice everyday with now!

  • Thanks for this Pebber... & for All your efforts...

    Dave

    ireland.

  • Dude, this is the best video in youtube ever =) It's so great how you just tell the truth and don't give false hopes. Most people just don't understand what you got to do to get good!

  • Love your videos that aren't great quality also, but it was nice learning some guitar in hq! Great lesson!

  • Comment removed

  • @ChicagoStyleMusic oi i agree with everything, but what does the Euro - Trash thingy have to do with anything ?

  • @Pierceher Ahhh...yes! You know what? I was in a very bad mood that day, and my comments were made without putting much thought into them. I apologize about using those words, and I hope that you were not personally offended.

  • @ChicagoStyleMusic thanks for the apology, No offense taken man :)

  • How can you hate a guy like Pebber? He puts in tremendous effort and gives it away for free! I didn´t know people like him exist anymore! I say it again: For free, for free, for free....but I can see why somebody would hate that - opening one´s eyes to the reality of how we really play can be painful - but if we want to learn and grow - I guess we have to face that. People have been nailed to a cross for speaking the truth...

  • This is fucking awesome!!!

  • @justreleased09 Thanks man - it was really done for guys like you.

  • @StigandStigmatic And your 18? When Brian Carroll was 18 he could blow circles around you. Hell when he picked up my bass and slapped it, it sounded like something. Are you just looking for attention, reaction, both or what? Come on smart ass let's put you up against Pebber on my stage.

  • @StigandStigmatic yeah why do you say that genius

  • @StigandStigmatic Are you 17 or something?

  • @StigandStigmatic HAHA, Pebber can play circles around you....he is hands down the BEST guitar teacher on the net... you probably are too lazy to even watch the entire video. :P

  • @jimiclaptoncarl18 It makes me wonder where all this hate comes from. I pust these up here for FREE for all YOU GUYS. I really could care less about promotinmg myself and I dont have any fantasies about "He thinks he's better than he is" thats why I practiced all day for many hours - because we all suck in our own way and we all know what we need to work on. These practices videos are just exemples of how pros do it. Everyone can benefit if they stop hating me.

  • @jimiclaptoncarl18 From watching his videos on his page - I can say that he would be a likely candidate who could IMMENSELY benefit from my lessons. Where his attitude comes from I have no idea - I didnt comment on his stuff or do anything to him.

  • Comment removed

  • @pebberbrown All the haters must have been dropped at birth... they've been angry ever since...That's the only explanation I can think of. :P

  • overuse/strain - I meant to say

  • Apologies if you deal with this in one of your videos, or in this one but I haven't got there yet - my question is:-

How do you make sure not to overuse strain your hands and forearms?

  • @stretch1973 First, dont listento anything that anyone who is 17 years old says. Second, you have to guage your own level. I put this one up just so people could get a feel for what a simulation of what a practice session could be for anyone who aspires to be professional. Most real pros practice for hours on end and most amateurs literally have NO idea how much it hurts to do that - so thats why this is here - because it takes many many hours a day to become a pro player.
