em pipes were screaming when the black watch walked acrossed open land into german machine fire. no wonder they ran away. it would have been frightening to see Canadians walking to their death with out emotion. they would have just looked like zombles always comeing and coming. plus the pipes were screaming loud while this act of braverly was acurring. and although the germans had the advantage and were mowing down the Canadians the sight of the never ending Canadians made the germans retreat.

I too agree. I'm a mcmillan but in 1770s my blood would have been in the Macmillan clan. but I'm happy being Canadian myself. in fact never even been to scotland but I would like to one day. hey gaelicscots, my grandparents were Scottish and even though i may have not been born in Scotland or even apart of its culture, there blood still goes through my veins and that is Scottish blood. I may not be Scottish, but hell i have a rich Scottish Heritage and i am damn proud of it, and damn proud to celebrate it. I go to Scotland every now and then and visit family over there, and "the fact remains" i love my heritage, the bagpipes (which i play), Gaidhlig, the people, and the History.

As most Americans my family emigrated to the US. 1 in the mid-18th century fleeing english retribution after the Jacobite War. My G-Grandmother arrived as a young girl mid-18th century from Inverness. Most Americans take pride in their heritiage, whereever their ancestors are from, and yes some are arrogant. Apologies to all our Scots-Canadian cousins for the stupid "plastic" comment. Most of us in Scotland know about our close links with Canada. My own village in Perthshire has a Canadian flag flying beside the Scots Saltire at all times. Thank you Canadians for keeping our traditions alive. Also, I LOVE to see Scottish descendents happy and prosperous under the blue North American skies. My grandfather, who grew up in poverty in the Outer Hebrides, loved Canada. Look three of my four grandparents came from Scotland, and both my Grandfathers spoke of it often to me. Regardless of the last names it is CLEAR my FAMILY is of Scottish descent/heritage.

The Glengarry bonnet is the traditional headwear of Pipers in the Army. In this case the cap-badge is topped by the Primrose Hackle; awarded to the Lancashire Fusiliers (British Army) after the Battle of Spion Kop in 1900. The hackle was transferred to their allied regiment, the Lorne Scots, in 1966 when the LF were to be amalgamated into the Royal Reg't of Fusiliers. This was done to ensure the Primrose Hackle would continue to be worn by soldiers on parade, not relegated to a museum.
