You might want to try filtering your water by bringing a cup and a bowl with you, and some saran wrap. Partially fill the bowl, put the cup inside, and cover it with the saran wrap (make sure the cup is below the saran wrap, and not pushed up against it). Weigh the center of the saran wrap, above the cup, down with a rock or some other small item that won't pull the wrap off the edges of the bowl. The water will evaporate from the bowl, condense on the saran wrap, roll down, and drip in the cup.

Scrap a pile of magnesium shavings about the diameter of a quarter and at least 1/8" thick and place your tinder close to them, hit the mag shavings with the sparks and get the tinder on the resulting small flames quickly. Works if you know how it's done. Hilarious vid. Really funny stuff.

when it comes to starting fire with a flint and steel(knife) you don't really need magnesium, just the flint. Heat rises so you have to try to light it from the base. Also when you stroke a flint block you must do it constantly and fast to make a continuos spark, once you see some embers on the leafs you blow gently and a flame should arouse.

Also, whenever I used a firesteel system, I find that it works better to have the knife blade directed away from you when you scrape. He is striking away from him, but the blade is pointed in.

It doesn't take much practice actually... with a flint and steel it's really easy, all it takes it know how to do it. You're not suppose to hold it above the tinder or even that far away from it like he does. A complete beginner who is trying for the first time can do it if he/she knows what to do. Even without practice.

@krabykevin I agree with you, but you have to admit it does get a lot easier with time. Personally I don't use these things - I use the ferrorod instead. The first fire I lit with that took quite a few strikes. Nowadays I usually get it going withing one or two strikes. As you're saying it's all about knowing what you're doing, but IMO that comes with experience.

You've got a point. I have no idea what kind of flint I use, but all I know is, the spark can shoot up to 500 degrees and it costed me like 200 dollars...But it's really good. It's one of those little round ones.
