this album is the greatest one to listen to if you're travelling across northern Ontario. This song is great for camping or cottaging, The Extremist is for driving, war for hiking along Lake Superior, Summer Song for pretty much anything, Tears In the Rain/ Why for rainy days, Motorcycle Driver for speeding past Lake Superior, and New Blues for paying speeding tickets!
In this album, Joe showed that he's as good a songwriter as he is as a guitarist. And what a cracking song to begin the album with, which peaked with the unbelieveable Motorcycle Driver. What can I say, total classic, something I'll treasure till the day I die.
A lot of people compare this guy to Vai. Vai might be a slightly better guitarist, but he can't hold a candle to Satch when it comes to writing melodies. Some of his melodies almost make me cry.
@WeslieJJ94 the tuning is a half step lower than the standard tuning, so:
Eb-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb from low to high
but if you watch satriani playing it live, you'll notice that he's playing it in the standard tuning, so it sounds a half step higher than on the CD. There are also a lot more backing tracks for the standard tuning version than for the CD-version.
@thepissflap i actually thought that too until i decided to tune my guitar down a halfstep (to Eb). the chords work perfectly with the open strings, so i think it's Eb, just like the 2nd song on the album (the extremist).
@satch077 Satch has it tuned in the 6th string on D, and all the others on a half step down. I just believe thats what it is anyways, I'm pretty sure Satch uses a different guitar when he plays this live, just so he doesn't have to tune it mid-show
@satch077 You're both right... the studio version is in drop Db tuning (for a thicker sound), while the live version is in drop D, which is mandatory to make the first D chord sound right. And BIG.
Thanks to satch077 for posting this. I was looking for it for a while and could not find it anywhere on this studio version. I like it more than the live version.
never really heard much of satriani, but after hearing this i really wanna hear more. anyone come up with some good suggestions? this 'exremist' album looks like a good starting point...
I have to be honest. This is my all time favorite Satriani song. I remember this fondly, as it was released in my senior year of high school. the memories. :)
A lot of "aces" just want to show you their fastball. This is one of his most expressive tunes...without showing off. It still gives me chills. Painfully beautiful.
but that doesn't add up as I play in standard tuning I tried to play along with it and I played one fret down (half a step) and it sounds perfectly in tune. if it's drop D it should've been 2 frets down
I actually cried the first time I heard this song, there was a surrounding context to it but I was really moved, it really expresses what friends are to me. Joe Satriani! xD
nice sound!!

Hi the tuning is:
Db-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb
Without the dropped Db you won't be able to get the intro anything like. Possibly my fave Satch tune.
