A good way for the FD to get away quicker would be to put up redlights for when they have an emergency like here in Sweden, they put redlights outside every firestation so they get free way out of the station and away.

Different States have different road laws and most importantly different driving attitudes, it takes emergency services way longer to respond in New York because of traffic.
