this sounds like something from the Achtung Baby sessions. You can hear Zoo Station 2:22, and throughout the rest of the song the bass line is straight Zoo
Great song. Burrows deep into your subconscious. I keep hearing "Spirit come on down" inside my head. It lingers and surfaces. I must hear song. Great job, U2!
Another great POP leftover.Man POP would have been better IMO if they would have added this song,Holy Joe,Big Girls Are Best,North and South of the River,Stateless,Im Not Your Baby, ect.Yep POP should have been a double album IMO.
I'm really suprised this never ended up as a b-side on the singles released from ATYCLB. You can tell they were searching for direction with this track - it's still dancey - a carry over from Pop, a Zoo Station/ Salome style bassline in parts - yet guitar lines in the breakdown are Beautiful Day. And the newborn baby's head lyric that ended up in Miracle Drug on HTDAAB.
Man, U2 are ridiculously good. After so many years, I still love almost everything they do, even the tracks they throw away. No other band impresses me as consistently as U2. They're an inspired band.
It's a pearl. It has something from POp. At 2:03 it sounds like Zooropa. Really great. It should be realased much earlier. Thanks U2 for all your passion, love and joy you give me.
yea, they do that some times, recycle a lyric from a non-studio song. they did before, I think for The more you see the less you know or something (cant remember exactly)
"no I'm not coming down"-probably from the chorus of Gone
"To be the bee, to be the bee and the flower
Before the sweetness, before the sweetness turns to sour"- this is nearly exactly like the beggining of the 2 verse in Always, the beautiful day b-side
"freedom has a scent
It's like the top of a newborn baby's head"
Is from the chorus of Miracle Drug...by the way its a great song
Yeah, this b-side is a good example of U2's song writing. They'll record dozens of songs and try to come up with the best arrangements from all to make one song. But this song itself is pretty uplifting..
This was a really interesting song to listen to. "Levitate" is the basic recipe for half a dozen other ATYCLB and HTDAAB songs-its bits and pieces ended up in so many other great songs. I love U2! This is creative recycling at its best!
Why have you censored someones plausible point of view...i dont agree with what he has said but why has he been prevented from voicing his opinion to others?
Ok i dont mean that you are literally a nazi, but why have you hidden his comment just because of his opinion...he hasnt said anything offensive. Hes been censored because of his opinion...something that U2 rally against.
Well it's a bit ironic that you called a german girl, a Nazi. When infact you're more of one than her. Insulting her like that. Who do you think you are?...Twater
I love their old stuff. But I cannot tell you how much the new stuff lifts me up! Window, Walk On, Original, Always - all have beautiful lyrics. & I love others mainly for the "movement" of the song - Fast Cars, Elevation, Love & Peace, Vertigo. I will forever adore Streets, I Will Follow, The Fly, Acrobat, Out Of Control, With Or Without You, etc. But I guess that in my deep love for their path in life, their experiments & depth, I have evolved with their music. God Bless U2. ALWAYS #1 !
Same here. I grew up with them. If you really want to see something funny, look at the war I started by accident on the "Love is blidness/ can't help falling in love video". It's gotten out of hand...rofl. All I said to start this riot is that Daniel Lanois, along with Brian Eno, wrote and performed the music for Love Is Blindness on Achtung Baby while U2 were in Morroco filming the Mysterious Ways video. Chaos has ensued! But I'm right. Lanois said so at a concert my brother attended.
Excuse me, Veryhuskey, but I happen to enjoy U2's music quite a bit (most likely even more than you). I grew up listening to them. They were my gateway drug to music. Now I do music for a living. So before you start a war here, think about what you are saying. This is the problem with U2 fans...they think U2 can do no wrong and anyone who says something in a critical way, you jump on the defense. This is why I hate the fans. I have a right to say what I want if I buy the albums.
fair enough. my jump was premature. you yourself didn't do it, but sometimes people come to commenting just really trash agaist u2, it's unwarrented, and i don't know why they even come on their song site if they hate them so much. like i say, your right, i was premature & unwarrented myself this time. no war here!
If you read Conversations, you'll see that Bono makes a comment about being in the recording studio for that very song & how The Edge was so wracked with pain over the end of his marriage that he was bending the strings on his guitar during the solo & you can hear one break during the recording. It's still in the song.
I can email you this song. I'm pretty sure it's actually from the 2000 All That You Can't Leave Behind sessions...his voice definitely sounds post-Pop.
It's in the "Rare" collection along with some other songs from studio sessions and alternate versions, and like u2htdaab mentioned it is accredited to ATYCLB sessions.

Does anyone REALLY know what songs are gonnae end up on the new CD?
If Smile and Levitate are samples of what's ahead, I'm more than delighted.
No B.S. please! Does anyone have an answer folks?
craighunter73 3 years ago
Its being used on new album, this is the one song that held up the release in NOV. 08. They just couldn't finish it (from what I've read).
Then in Feb they were redoing Smile (which was orginally 9mins long)
